I’m not a fan of Oregon (especially at a deep discount which is the most likely scenario) to the BIG but the USC freak out would ALMOST make it worth it .

Well we’ll have an answer soon. I’m doubtful the Apple contract in its initial stages will match what Arizona can get by moving and so they will be gone.

If prices were being set by market forces perhaps this would be best for Oregon (money wise) but that is not what is happening. Imagine Oregon getting 20-30 million to join the BIG12 and having to pay millions extra for travel and other costs. I live on the West Coast in a different culture and geographic place than Texas and the BIG12 in general, as does the Oregon campus. That is why I’ve felt that Oregon would be best served to stay in a West Coast conference even if that means less money. Being in the BIG12 also still means recruits are going to have to move to Oregon.

Having a free market means there cannot be large actors that can set prices. Capitalism requires companies to compete and set prices through that competition. We are not seeing that happening for the PAC and our lives will likely be less because of the media “trust” in action.

The goal is to get PAC-12 teams at less than market value because the linear monopolists are able to control the market. All the folks wanting Oregon to leave the PAC better realize that Oregon is not going to get anywhere close to market value. They may get less than they would from Apple. Given the collusion between linear TV and the conferences any idea that leaving the PAC will be good for Oregon is naive. The whole purpose of this collusion is to get Oregon and other PAC team’s games for pennies on the dollar.

Yup, the panic caused by Colorado and possibly Arizona leaving means the PAC is going to get fleeced.

Go where and for how much? B1G? Not sure they are expanding and if they change their mind, they aren’t going to give Oregon a penny over what they could get elsewhere. Not only that but out of that vastly reduced payment Oregon will be paying millions in travel. Follow Colorado? Not sure how anyone considers that a step up. “It’s time to go” ignores a lot of unpleasant reality including the possibility of starvation level payments for the next several years. “It’s time to go” is magical thinking, not a plan. Oregon would be much better being in the PAC for the next several years and then reassessing it’s future from a position of strength. Nothings says “little brother” like netting 10 million after travel and other extra expenses while USC is netting 50 million. Netting 30 million that Oregon probably could have gotten if the PAC had hung together a bit longer sounds a lot better and would give us a lot better chance to play with the A team.

Well, we will find out soon enough. If so you can bet no one will pay Oregon more to join their conference. If true, all of you hoping for the PAC to be destroyed so Oregon will move to another conference will have to look up "Pyrrhic victory" unless your true goal is to destroy Oregon. Then you can dance in the streets.

Well that has long been a debate. Ultimately these are universities, not sports teams. Oregon (the university) would survive without sports, though sports does add to the college experience. "Fit’" in this context does include academics. If you want a true sports conference then push for the football and basketball teams separating from the universities and running the clubs as purely business. Of course, that would likely fail since we already have these organizations. They are called the NFL for football, and the NBA in basketball. Good luck competing against them.

Yeah, Wilner is not impressed by our current presidents. They need to get "off the pot" or they will fall in, taking the PAC with them. Good article.

I don’t remember Canzano repeatedly saying the agreement will be signed in "in the next week or two." Perhaps he quoted sources? This last article is the first that I remember Canzano quoting a hard deadline. If I’m wrong how about some links to his statements. They are all on the web.

I’m with the “have no real hate” crowd. Love to thump them and am anguished when the beat us (fortunately rare) but they are more like an obnoxious little brother, loved as long as they know their place. Definitely worried about them if the PAC disintegrates.

Something to remember about sources from other conferences, many of them have been trying to kill the PAC for months.

Very true, but my understanding is that almost all those presidents are gone. The turnover has been immense maybe because university boards realized the old presidents needed to go.

The PAC needs a media deal, stat. If that means they leaves some money on the table, too bad. The conference is on the edge of hemorrhaging out.

Do OBD readers really think the PAC university presidents are that different than the university presidents of other football schools? I highly doubt it. They are all shaped by the academic environment in which they learned their craft. Most of the current presidents weren’t around when Scott was hired and enabled. Those Scott tenure presidents deserve a lot of scorn for their stupidity, including USC’s Folt who was instrumental in many of the PAC’s worse decisions. The same Folt who is now lauded as a genius for moving USC to another conference. Given her long run of poor decision making maybe this move will not turn out to be a genius decision in the long run, hmmm? I was originally pretty upset with PAC leadership, but as I’ve learned more this has become tempered. Colorado has been "wobbly" on staying in the PAC for months. PAC leadership knew this as did many sports writers I trust who somehow thought this was not worth mentioning. Colorado was wobbly because they were drawn to going back to conference they called home for 62 years, a conference where they think they will "fit" and thus thrive in the future. Maybe there is a lesson there for those of us who think that moving to a new conference is a simple decision based upon money and media exposure where cultural, academic, and geographical fit plays little role.

Interesting to think how where a person is located might affect their conference views. West coasters prefer Oregon in a west coast conference? Midwesterners and those on the east want Oregon in a Midwest or Eastern conference? The west coast PAC is not dead (yet) and many Oregon fans want the west coast Oregon team to stay where it fits culturally and geographically. Oregon football is not a soulless corporate entity that can move anywhere. It is an important part of a university, a university that is very much embedded within the ethos of the west coast and of western Oregon, specifically. in many ways Colorado returning home highlights the importance of culture and fit. Yes money played a role, but so did returning to their roots (along with moving to a weaker football conference where they might be able to compete).
