Well, do you want to be a ruler (fear) or leader (people follow you because they want to). This is a complex question to answer. Was the team tired of this player a glad to see him go? How about the power imbalance? It’s huge in sports and many recent reforms are, at their core, designed to reduce the asymmetry of power. "Old school" is, IMHO, a euphemism for rule through fear, the threat of violence, and violence. I’m not so naive to believe a community can exist without some ability to act violently against the worse offenders. However violence and intimidation can be a first response or last resort. My most complete answer would be a combination of emotion and reason best invoked by the question "would I want my child to be part of Sander's team," and the response would be no (actually a lot stronger than that but I don't want to invoke the language filters). I don't like the callous way he treats the people that depend on him and, sadly, misguidedly look up to him.

I think 10-2 would be a successful season especially if we defeat the Huskies and backstabbing USC. It all depends on defensive improvements.

Given he just showed up, he’s probably just got a big paycheck from one of the conferences trying to destroy the PAC. His going after the commits is just disgraceful. Amazing how low people will go for money.

I’m not into “throwback” uniforms. Clothing and design have moved on, mostly for the better. But perhaps the players find it cool and the uniforms are for them, not us.

I’m in the “who cares” crowd.

Great idea as long as there is a place to watch the game for those of us without tickets. The only negative to that time of year is snow in the passes as I drive from the south. That said, I’d love to come up.

Yeah, I’ve spent a lot of my reading time biting my tongue to not respond or to not even read the posts on “how awful is the PAC-10-12 and how wonderful is the B1G.” Can’t wait for the contract to be signed and the season to start so we can talk about our Beloved Ducks.

I agree. How often do you see a player in the transfer portal being picked up by a team that recruited him (a lot). Options if things don’t work out is a good thing.

Fascinating how little respect Oregon gets from the “press” (whatever that means today). USC is ranked 4th in preseason polls and Oregon is ranked below WA and Utah. I’ve seen this a lot ever since Oregon started to win with Chip and win and recruit with Cristobal and Lanning. I’ll never forget one year, when Oregon won the conference and was clearly the best team, how the coaches and players were snubbed in the postseason awards. Of course the best “revenge” is to win and continue to win. Polls and opinions (especially opinions shaped by ill will and envy) don’t mean much. Oregon’s recruiting and coaching mean Oregon will be the dominant PAC team for the foreseeable future (even if USC had stayed).

Well, I’m not fond of paying multiple streaming services but if the quality is higher and it puts us in better financial shape…okay. I don’t know how many of you have noticed but on Fubo TV at least the PAC-12 channels are streamed at very low bit rates. The compression artifacts and overall low video quality makes my eyes “scream.” I’m hoping that the new contract mandates streaming video quality much higher than what we are currently getting.

What I’ve seen is the B1G advocates posting more than those okay with the PAC-10. This gives the perception that there is majority of fans and schools wanting to be in the B1G. Initially I thought it might be a good idea but have changed my mind. Perhaps in five years the USC/UCLA jump will be seen as a brilliant move, but more likely IMHO, the move will be seen as a failure and cautionary tale about chasing the money by moving to a geographical and culturally distant conference. UCLA is a mediocre team and USC is overhyped by media and USC fans. How is USC going to become a national champion and put Oregon in the dust when Oregon has out recruited USC for the last several years with no signs of Oregon dominance being overcome?

It all depends on the additional expenses of moving. The TV money is now down to $60 million, subtract 10 mil for travel, higher coaching pay etc., another 5-10 mil to support Cal, and you are pretty much within a few mil of what PAC-12 teams are making. Is that worth the move? Throw in the fact that any extra money will go to retiring their debt and not into building a stronger athletic department and you have the potential for longterm irrelevance. Only time will tell.

Speaking as a professional chaplain working in a public interfaith environment… what Lanning appears to be doing is very tricky. What does he mean by faith? Would a Muslim, Jewish, LDS, or Buddhist student athlete feel welcome? Would an atheist? Would a conservative Christian feel welcome? Would a liberal Christian feel welcome? Remember, the bloodiest religious wars are often fought between denominations or branches of the same religion. What has been happening over the last 70 years or so has been a broadening of the number of religions accepted by American society. This has been paralleled by a structure of laws. In my profession the first professional chaplains were all Protestant ministers. Then Catholics, then Jewish, now Muslim, Buddhist, Wiccan (and etc.) are all accepted and welcomed members of professional chaplaincy. This was made possible by changes in American society. I’m not behind the scenes at Oregon football but I do know that having a religiously inclusive community, which is required by law and tradition at a secular public university, is difficult. It sounds to like Lanning could be walking a slack line rope over a deep hole. I’m hoping he doesn’t fall off. My apologies if this post is seen as political. It was not meant to be but if it needs to be deleted I understand. Politics and religion are always just a step away from each other.

I think @Jon Joseph meant the value before the move…and the value is now down to 60 million and potentially lower. The 10 million difference will likely be eaten up by travel and higher coaching costs.

Talked about how the PAC can highlight the biggest rivalry of the year, Oregon v Washington. He talked about both teams having a bye before the game and not scheduling a hard team (Utah) immediately afterwards. Wilner pointed how the SEC protects its top teams and rivalries and said we should do the same.

The whole “bring USC and UCLA over” has the feel of a poorly conceived screwup. Rushed into by all involved without a lot of thought. $$$$ blinded all involved to the very real difficulties. Another factor is that USC thinks it is a better team than they really are. The media eggs them on ascribing to USC a greatness they haven’t achieved in decades. This is based upon USC being able to recruit due to their location. However that hasn’t panned out (yet at least) with “lowly” Oregon out recruiting USC for the last several years and with Oregon recruiting momentum not slowing down. If anything it is kicking into a higher gear. I’m glad USC is gone. I’m not so naive as to believe in a complete lack of selfishness as a viable strategy, but USC has consistently shown poor judgement and an eager willingness to backstab other members of the PAC.
