Bowl Projection Roundup: Where each Pac-12 team is slotted to play after Week 13 The regular season has come to an end in the world of college football, and it’s brought with it a lot of finality. We know who is bowl-eligible and who is not, and we know that in reality, the Pac-12 Conference has seen its end, with the final game of existence coming on Friday night between No. 3 Washington and No. 5 Oregon. That’s given us a lot of clarity as we look ahead to the postseason, trying to figure out which bowl games each team might be in line for, and who is going to be sitting at home and getting a jump on the offseason. While there are still some things left to be decided, we’ve got a pretty good idea of who is going where. Here’s the final bowl projections for Pac-12 teams of the 2023 season... Ducks preparing for improved performance in second meeting with Washington Oregon players offered thoughts on where they think the Ducks must play better this time around against Washington. While a few plays will be remembered most from the first time the Ducks and Huskies met this season, there's more than a few areas the Ducks are striving to improve upon in the rematch. Oregon's offense amassed 541 yards and scored 33 points the last time these teams met. No team has gained more yards on Washington and only USC has scored more points. Still, Bo Nix can't help but nitpick the execution on several of the game's most crucial downs. A trio of failed fourth down conversions have been especially hard not to dwell on... Kirk Herbstreit Names 'Doomsday' Scenario For College Football Playoff The college football season has reached the most important week on the calendar as conference championships are set to be decided. Teams can punch their ticket to the College Football Playoff by taking care of business on Saturday, while others will see their championship hopes ended after crushing losses. There are a handful of teams that have the opportunity to find their way into the playoff, with some simply needing a win to get the job done. Others will need a little more help to qualify, and ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit says there's a scenario that could shake up the sport as we know it. "If Alabama wins, and Michigan wins, and Oregon or Washington win and Texas wins...what the hell do you do?," asked Herbstreit on a recent episode of Pardon My Take... That means every little detail, every chance to make an impression on the committee, counts more than ever this weekend. Of course, the Group of 5 have their own conference championship games as well this weekend and one of those actually makes our list this week of the five best conference championship games you should be watching. 5 takeaways from Championship Week College Football Playoff rankings As expected, Ohio State’s 30-24 loss to Michigan in The Big Game on Saturday sent the Buckeyes tumbling in the penultimate College Football Playoff rankings, which were released on Tuesday night. The Buckeyes’ loss moved the undefeated Washington Huskies up to No. 3 in the rankings, two spots behind No. 1 Georgia and one spot behind the Wolverines. Florida State and Oregon were also big beneficiaries of the Buckeye bump, moving to No. 4 and No. 5 respectively... 5 takeaways from Championship Week College Football Playoff rankings SATURDAYOUTWEST.COM As expected, Ohio State’s 30-24 loss to Michigan in The Big Game sent the Buckeyes tumbling in the penultimate College Football... -
No. 5 Oregon takes aim at No. 3 Washington in Pac-12 title game The final Pac-12 championship game has it all. An undefeated team. Two top Heisman candidates. The nation’s best two passing attacks. A rematch of a regular-season thriller. A heated regional rivalry. And the winner essentially punches a ticket to the College Football Playoff. No. 3 Washington (12-0) and No. 5 Oregon (11-1) — two programs headed to the Big Ten in 2024 — will meet Friday night in Las Vegas, where a spot in the CFP and the Heisman race could be decided in the Pac-12’s high-profile swan song. And here’s one more twist: The Huskies, who won the regular-season meeting 36-33 at home on Oct. 14, were staggering 9.5-point underdogs early in the week. The reason for that is mostly because the Ducks have surged to six consecutive wins, lead the nation in scoring differential (plus-29.33), and are one of three teams nationally in the top 10 in scoring (second, 45.3 points per game) and scoring defense (seventh, 15.9)... Official College Football Playoff Rankings No. 5

Oregon, Texas, or Ohio State? How the BCS rankings would compare to the CFP rankings The penultimate College Football Playoff rankings have been released, and with just a handful of days until these standings are made final, some of the controversies and complaints have started to reach a fever pitch in the world of college football. Unsurprisingly, the Oregon Ducks are in the middle of the conversation, with a lot of opposing fanbases getting frustrated by their place in the standings after Week 14. On Tuesday night, the latest CFP rankings had Oregon move up to No. 5, while Ohio State dropped to No. 6 with their first loss, followed by Texas and Alabama. Based on the Longhorns’ and Buckeyes’ strength of records, fans were upset that the Ducks still got the top spot among one-loss teams. In the end, it will all play itself out, with the Ducks having the top-ranked opponent of the group in this week’s conference championship game in No. 3 Washington, while Texas plays No. 18 Oklahoma State, and Ohio State doesn’t play in a conference championship game at all. One thing we like to do throughout the season, though, is look at what the BCS standings from last decade would have done with the rankings using their formula. It was a time when there wasn’t a committee of voters who decided the final rankings each year, but rather a set of computers that calculated the final rankings based on numerous formulas that often led to convolution and controversy. Just for our entertainment, we wanted to look at how those BCS standings would look if there in practice today. Take a look... Getting Loud: Career Records with Covid and Transfers Who gets to claim the career records for players who transfer? Bo Nix is the greatest QB in the history of both Oregon and Auburn. No disrespect to Justin Herbert, Marcus Mariota or Stan White (Auburn’s record holder, don’t worry, I had to look him up too), but his numbers are statistically the best ever seen at either school. I’m not talking about completion percentage or passer rating either. Though he blows away the competition in both categories there as well. I am talking about yards and touchdowns. With 7,499 yards right now, Nix will make #3 on the Oregon career passing yards board with 230 yards to pass Bill Musgrave, probably by the time they play “Shout” in Vegas this Friday. I don’t think he will make up the 3,000 yards he is behind Marcus Mariota and Justin Herber for the top 2 spots. But his career 14,750 yards and 105 TDs total makes him the best QB in the history of both Auburn and Oregon. So which school gets to claim him? It’s a silly thought, but I am about to get loud about it... Boo Corrigan explains significant drop for Ohio State in latest CFP rankings Boo Corrigan and the College Football Playoff committee have been high on Ohio State all season long. Unfortunately, the Buckeyes lost to Michigan in The Game and tumbled out of the top 4 as a result. With the loss, Ohio State fell from No. 2 all the way to No. 6. While the Buckeyes are ahead of other 1-loss contenders in Texas and Alabama, Ohio State is behind fellow 1-loss team Oregon. Michigan State releases contract terms for head football coach Jonathan Smith Once Michigan State athletic director Alan Haller identified Oregon State's Jonathan Smith as the guy he wanted to bring in to turn around the Spartans' program, he and the university were willing to give Smith a big pay raise to lure him away from his alma mater. Michigan State has signed Smith to a 7-year, $52.85 million contract that will run through 2031. The head coach's wages include a base pay of $6 million per year, as well as an additional, supplement pay which begins at $1,250,000 and increases by $100,000 each year until topping out at $1,850,000. Bo Nix runs away from Penix with the Pac-12 QB rankings title USC’s Caleb Williams won the PFF.com Pac-12 quarterback rankings a year ago and turned that into a Heisman Trophy. Now Oregon’s Bo Nix is attempting to make it a repeat performance in the last year of the Conference of Champions. The Trojans’ lackluster second half cost Williams games and his ranking kept going down, but the same couldn’t be said for Nix or Washington’s Michael Penix. They proved week in and week out that they were the top two quarterbacks in the Pac-12 and both should earn a trip to New York for the Heisman ceremonies. As it should be, Nix and Penix will face each other on Friday for the last Pac-12 championship with the winner most likely claiming the Heisman.
