Speaking of 2007. Was Rich Brooks the coach who got Kentucky into the top 10 in 2007? That alone tells me how good he was. I think your 2001 Oregon squad was worthy of championship talk imo.

Yeah my reference was a compliment my friend. I consider myself a visual learner, but that guy Jennings is like a computer. Think of all the pain McDonald could've saved future Vols including Sir Omaha Omaha himself, if only he'd let Steve be a backup or something. Would Spurrier take the Florida job in the eighties? For people under the age of forty that answer is a no brainier. But Florida was like Oregon before Belotti in those dark days. I became a fan in the 90's, but in Florida it was very much Hurricane and Seminole dominated before Spurrier got the Fun &Gun going. Sure the Gators got blown out in '95 to Tom Osborne, but it felt inevitable that it was only a matter of time before they broke through. I think it's a similar feeling in Eugene today. But in the 70's and 80's? Florida was seen as a potential sleeping giant. The facilities sucked, the best in State kids were going to Miami, Free Shoes, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and Notre Dame. I have Spurrier as number one because he was the first Heisman winner. He recruited and coached the second, and he brought swagger and fun to Florida. He brought Florida it's first National Title. Without Steve Spurrier, I don't know if Tim Tebow even goes to Florida. Tim is my age, and I'm sure he became a Florida fan for the same reasons I did. I think Chip Kelly and Mike Belotti should be inducted into the college football hall of fame, and both go into the Oregon ring of honor for the same reasons as Spurrier at Florida. Mike built that program, but Chip elevated it nationally with that RPO quick tempo. Dan Lanning is going to be like your Urban Meyer imo. But he's going to do it without the off field drama, and with more longevity.

Thanks Jon, he took over in '93 right? Who was the coach who was there when Spurrier was looking at colleges. Was it Majors? I guess I could not be lazy and do a two minute search and find out. But you are like the Ken Jennings of college football information. I trust you more than Wikipedia. I don't know if there are any Vols on here.

I was shocked to discover he was born in Miami. His father was a pastor in both Georgia and Tennessee. The Volunteers didn't recruit him because he ran something called the wing T. Jon, you know more about the history of college football than I. Was Johnny Majors the coach of Tennessee at that time?

Ngata was a man and a half. I think he helped prolong Ray Lewis career in Baltimore. I remember Lewis complaining about the lack of any help after Tony Siragusa retired. I laughed because he had a guy like Ed Reed behind him, but Ray needed some space eaters up front to allow him space to disrupt running lanes or get to the QB.

I've owned maybe two pairs my whole life. To me they don't have the durability of a good old fashioned pair of Wranglers. If I'm rocking the shorts I prefer camos or even khaki.

He is right up there. Spurrier is seen as the Godfather of Florida. He won a Heisman as a QB. When he left Duke to join Florida, people forget that Florida had won nothing. They were more known for Gatorade than success on the field. Steve brought swagger and the fun &gun reveloutinized the game. Danny Wuerffel won the school's second Heisman under Steve. Free Shoes University was a quip Steve made that really irked Bobby Bowden, and boy that Florida vs FSU rivalry in the 90's was bigger than FSU vs Miami in the 80's. The 1996 season saw FSU hand Florida it's only loss, but Florida trounced them in the Sugar Bowl to win it's first ever National Title. That was the game that made me a Gator fan, even though I later attended FSU because of my major and decision to enlist in the Air Force. But my top 3, and most people's would be 1.) Spurrier 2.) Tim Tebow 3.) Emmitt Smith Some might have Wuerffel or Kearse up there. But Tebow is undoubtedly in the discussion. It helps that he is genuinely one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. I saw him with his fiance eating dinner and he talked to me for ten minutes.

Oregon is blessed with a great track and field program. Your baseball and softball squads aren't shabby either. I don't really follow much beyond football myself, but Florida has won a baseball, basketball, softball and numerous Olympic sports as well. But I would trade all of those for a couple more football titles. You would think Florida would invest in it's football program, but that wasn't the case. It took Dan Mullen to get an indoor practice facility. Can you imagine a football program in the SEC having to be called out to finally invest in the sport that pays the bills? Heck the school didn't even want to get into the NIL game until it became apparent to keep a guy like Lagway, that you might want to tap into those who've been willing to invest. Maybe not like Phil Knight, but there are some derp pockets that are willing to make sure Miami doesn't continue to run circles around us. I ask you, my Duck friends a fun question. If you could guarantee a title or two in the next five years. What would it be? Would you take two basketball titles, one baseball and softball title, or a football championship?

From Miles Away - Still Good to Confirm Columbus Will be Lee's Last Lid Exercise
When I think of Beano Cook and Lou Holtz, I think of Grumpy Old Men. Except with them it's "Delusional Old Men". Beano was high on Penn State, he said somethings might change. But Penn State will usually beat Ohio State, and a program like Oregon could never win consistently against a program like Penn State. He said this in 2011 btw.

From Miles Away - Still Good to Confirm Columbus Will be Lee's Last Lid Exercise
I think Beano couldn't make the decision that Lee did. There are clips or him in the 80's where he talks about people complaining about there being too many bowls. Can you imagine how he'd handle the playoffs and NIL issues?

Best mascot in the game imo. Back in the seventies or eighties there was talk to have a live Gator be at football games. Luckily for UGA that idea never produced anything. As we saw in the 2018 Sugar Bowl vs Texas when Bevo acted like a Bull meeting a Bulldog played out. Luckily UGA wasn't hurt, the same couldn't be said about the team that day.

Lee is still good for a few good quips here and there. Older guys tell the best stories, and I've come to appreciate even the smallest bits of it. I remember the days of Lou Holtz battling that guy Mark May, and Beano Cook not understanding Colin Cowherd when he asked him if Beano was going to enjoy the Super Salad. Beano took it as Colin asking if he liked Soup or Salad better.

Alexander the great believed elephants were a great unused resource for labor when he first began seeing different parts of the world. My question is if the elephants ever formed a union or asked for better peanuts while doing their jobs. They say an elephant never forgets. Also, which kind of elephants did Caeser and Cleopatra use the most? I'm assuming the African since Egypt is on that continent, and they're generally much bigger. But the Indian elephant might be a little easier on those roads.

Texas Blocks Ohio State Game-Time Change...
I get what you're saying Jon, and I can't get behind what Sankey thinks the playoffs should be. I personally believed the playoff should've been eight from the start. It was mind-blowing that there were five power programs and Notre Dame( they're special) but only four spots. I can't get into that again though. I hate the static scheduling the SEC does. Meaning each SEC team plays the exact same conference schedule in consecutive years but the home field is flipped. My reason for creating this topic was to point out a concerning trend with teams backing out of series like Nebraska did to Tennessee within ten months of the game to be played, and SEC teams refusing to play nine game schedules but still saying they deserve more respect because top to bottom the league is tougher. Texas is running from a home away game but insisting that Texas gets to host a night game next year. What if Ohio State says no?

Texas Blocks Ohio State Game-Time Change...
It appears the Texas Longhorns are more than happy to play at Ohio State at Noon. Their reason? Well apparently it's because the AD doesn't want to play Sunday night because of personal reasons. I won't mock him for his reason because I understand. However I doubt it's true because Texas has played on Sunday before. Plus Texas has a private jet that could get him from Austin at 2 pm and get to Columbus in two hours. We love football in the South and we have traditional beliefs. But I've never hear of an AD making millions blow so much smoke. Texas is no longer burnt orange, they're yellow. I wonder if Ohio State will try something next year because we all know they're very touchy about slights. I'm sure they're still chapped about Oregon beating them last year off what they call a cheap play, but it was actually Lanning knowing the rules. I heard the Oregon at Penn State game will be a 7pm btw. That's going to be an awesome environment. Oregon should wear all black and come out to the Darth Vader theme.

Staples: Florida at Oregon in CFP
It's silly season. Just like I won't get too high or low on who committed or who deccommited until the guys are suiting up against Miami. I won't be looking at playoff projections or matchups until Florida is in the top 10 come November. That would mean the team has proven itself against somebody. I'll let FSU fans celebrate a preseason top 10, then they go on and win a grand total of two games.

It's a Power 2 World, and OBD is Living in It!
I've lived out in Arizona for twelve years now and I can honestly say I've heard about ASU football maybe four times in totality. Two of those came when Oregon was ranked number one or two and they had to travel to Tempe. There was the one year the Devils won the Pac 12 South and got pummeled by Stanford. The fourth was this past year when they got a bye and nearly made it to the Semis, but they let Texas score on a fourth and twelve and lost in overtime. Should ASU have gotten a bye? How about Boise with their zero top 25 wins? ASU lost to Cincy by two touchdowns btw. I can subjectively say in a real life seeding that ASU and Boise weren't better than Miami, Alabama, Ole Miss or South Carolina. But I'm glad they got in over those teams. I would prefer to see an undefeated or one loss Boise and a two loss conference champion in ASU get their shot. You can't let three loss SEC teams get the nod. You can't let a Miami team that loses to Georgia Tech and Syracuse in. Just don't give the eleven and twelves seeds byes. Heck Notre Dame shouldn't get a bye and reports coming from Jon Wilner say the Irish prefer the home game over the bye. I've heard it from Texas, Penn State and even Ohio State fans(although Tennessee fans had a strong contingency there) that a home playoff game is bigger than getting the bye. Of course Boise and ASU wouldn't get the home games most likely. Clemson might.

It's a Power 2 World, and OBD is Living in It!
Sadly the Pac 12, Big. 12, and ACC all did multiple things to lead them to their current status. The ACC signed a terrible 12 year television deal that isolated their top programs. The Big 12 gave Texas carte blanche over everybody else, and the Pac 12 arrogantly thought the B1G and Pac 12 were brothers from different mothers.

CFP Moves to Straight Seed Approach for Byes
Two questions. Why would the ACC and Big 12 give up their last year of having their champions get that by? What the heck does Notre Dame have on the SEC and B1G leaders? Is it NBC pulling something here? Peacock power?

USC Demands Major Date Change to Keep Notre Dame Rivalry Alive
To people under the age of 30 Notre Dame isn't special. They have cool uniforms, a cool stadium and a cool fight song. The "Here Come The Irish" song is awesome, and Rudy is a great movie and real life story. But outside of all that stuff it's just another big name program. The fact that they are given a seat at the CFP negotiating table should make people question why. If the B1G and SEC froze them out would it damage the playoffs? I'm not for the whole NFL style taking hold, but if it did the one positive might be freezing out Notre Dame and forcing them to make a choice. They've played the system great and I commend them for that. But it's time to stop letting them play everyone for fools.

Ruh-Roh! B1G Not Happy with West Coast Dominance in Their First Year!
Oregon is a power in track and field. UCLA has an awesome swimming and volleyball program. Since moving out West I've discovered the passion for football isn't as rabid, but the depth of the athletic programs out here is second to none. I know what water polo is now. The B1G traditionalist probably has no idea what Olympic sports means as far as it goes with collegiate athletes. I really didn't as I primarily care about football and occasionally basketball if the Gators have a great squad. In the SEC many fans do care about swimming, volleyball, softball and baseball along with track and field. But I personally really only pay attention to those things during the Olympics.
-
Ruh-Roh! B1G Not Happy with West Coast Dominance in Their First Year!
I'm not a huge baseball fan. But did you know the last B1G team to win a World Series was Ohio State in 1966? I find that to be an incredible stat. The SEC has dominated with Tennessee, LSU, South Carolina, Texas and Florida all winning titles in the last decade. Heck Bevis, Coastal Carolina, Vanderbilt and Wichita State have won titles since that 1966 season. USC has won numerous titles in that span. The western newbies are going to bring the conference something it hasn't had in my lifetime.

The Oregon-Penn State Conundrum: Are Both Locks for the Playoffs in 2025?
I do see and respect the point you're making though. I just hear Penn State being listed as a blue blood and they have the history to back it up. I place the expectations of a traditional power in one of the big two leagues higher than I even do with Nebraska or Texas A&M. People are saying they are the favorites or number one team based off their returning talent, coordinators and what the last two champions have looked like in comparison. Until Franklin wins a game against a team with equal or greater talent, I don't buy into them as a champion. Michigan and Ohio State won big games, at least one a year. Oregon has won at least one or two big wins under Lanning. That's really my entire point. But I do see your's and respect where you're coming from and how you got there.
