OBD Paths to the Future. Which Would You Choose?
OregonDucks replied to The Kamikaze Kid's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
LOL. Who would have thought that the Ducks would have two quarterbacks break the all time college starting QB record IN CONSECUTIVE SEASONS?! -
I could be completely wrong but 2025-26 feels like more of a “rebuilding year” to me. We lose a ton of starters from the Rose Bowl roster and might be breaking in a talented, but younger QB. Hopefully we still are good enough to earn a playoff spot next year.

Dang. That’s all Coach Lanning had to do?!! -
OBD Paths to the Future. Which Would You Choose?

In terms of the OP's question: * PK and our boosters might choose option A. They have been waiting a long time for that elusive championship and the window is now. I'm sure that they are well aware that there are no guarantees with this approach, however (see Texas A&M, USC, Colorado, Ole Miss, etc.). * DL and our coaches might prefer option C but are the boosters and fans willing to sit through 3-4 loss seasons until the younger guys develop? Coach Day (at Ohio State) and Coach Smart (at Georgia) have both been in their positions longer so the roster is completely theirs and they can plug the occasional transfer portal player into key positions of need. I believe that Coach Lanning has found the right formula, for now, but, as Charles mentioned, it may be temporary until they are able to get a roster full of their high school recruits and then they may only go to the portal occasionally (option C). -

I guarantee you that other Ohio State players know their value and are getting paid. Not just the transfers. -

Duck QB Signee Sagapolutele to Enter Transfer Portal
OregonDucks replied to DrJacksPlaidPants's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I can’t fault a kid for wanting to play sooner rather than later. If he didn’t think that he would have a shot at Oregon for 2-3 years, if at all, then I understand his decision. The only question for me is - why did he sign with Oregon in the first place, if his goal was to play right away? Any internet search would have shown him that we have a 5-star transfer QB from UCLA and a 4-star QB who has been on the team for 2 years. -
Sorry, sounds like an excuse. Every team has sick players this time of year and like Coach Lanning says “being sick is a choice.” The team was simply unprepared. (See Michael Jordan in Game 5 of the 1997 NBA Finals.)
-
(Please note, I’m not blaming the coaches and know that they would love every game to be over at halftime. It would cause them less stress, as well.)
-
We could blow out inferior opponents without revealing too much of the playbook and, if you get a big insurmountable lead, you can rest the starters, which helps with load management. For whatever reason, Oregon just hasn’t been able to keep its foot on the gas (see the 3rd quarter scoring stats).
-
Well said! Against the best teams, you need the most talent as possible on the field to match up. Oregon needs to find more ways to get the young studs a chance to get that game experience without costing Oregon too much. It’s definitely a balancing act. I’m disappointed that the offense wasn’t able to build more substantial leads the past couple of seasons against the worst teams so that the backup QBs and younger players couldn’t get more reps, like we used to under CK. That pays huge dividends down the road, IMHO.

Notre Dame Beats Georgia 23-10 in the Sugar Bowl
OregonDucks replied to 30Duck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Sorry the Dawgs lost. As I mentioned before the game, from afar, it really seemed as though Georgia missed its playmakers (TE and WR). Not sure who Georgia loses and has coming in but a complete offensive rebuild might not be necessary. Your defense will always keep you in games. -
It would have been better if Oregon had not played in the conference championship game or lost. Then you get a first round “warm up” game at home before facing the next team on a neutral field, coming off a 3+ week bye. Makes no sense. Luckily Georgia lost too so changes are more likely sooner rather than later.

The Biggest Rose Bowl Shock: It's OVER
OregonDucks replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
The game was 20-3 with less than 2 minutes to go in the first half. Oregon was not going to win that game with UW’s offense. -
Or an extra game (vs. a 10-2 SEC or B1G team watching the conference championship game).
-
I would also eliminate conference championship games but that is not up to the playoff committee. However, the committee could say that they will consider the result of the conference championship games in their playoff ranking and selection criteria. That might make conferences reconsider.
-
I think the playoff committee needs to look at a couple of things: 1. Seeding should be based on the committee’s rankings, not based on conference champions (like the NCAA basketball tournament) 2. The playoffs should start the week after the last conference games 3. The first 2-3 rounds should be at the home stadium of the higher seeded teams (a real advantage) 4. The college football playoffs should conclude around January 1st, preferably at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena

…after the 24+ day layoff, including the B1G and SEC champions.

The Biggest Rose Bowl Shock: It's OVER
OregonDucks replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Actually, it’s 3 out of 6: • Georgia “neutral site” game • Washington in Pac-12 Championship Game • Ohio State in Rose Bowl I certainly don’t hold the Georgia loss against him given it was his first game as the Oregon coach and he was going up against one of the great teams of the modern college football era. The other two games his teams were not prepared. Last year’s conference championship game was not as close as the score indicated. UW jumped all over Oregon (like Alabama did to Georgia this year) and the game was really over in the first half. -
We could have blitzed the linebackers. You can’t let a QB sit back in the pocket and pick you apart, especially if the safeties aren’t in the right place and are giving up big plays anyway. Might as well be aggressive and try to get pressure on Howard. He has made mistakes when under pressure. Unfortunately, Oregon’s defensive line was not able to get pressure only rushing 4. Oregon’s defense got gashed in the ground (7 yards per carry) and beat deep through the air. What exactly were they trying to do? Usually you aim to take something away from the offense.
-
With all due respect, what have the coaches been doing the past 24 days? Not enough time to add new wrinkles and make adjustments on offense or defense?
-
I turned off the Rose Bowl midway through the first half but saw more of a bend but don’t break defense this season. Where were all of the zone blitzes / simulated pressures that we saw at Georgia? This is year 3 under Coach Lanning and Coach Lupoi. Shouldn’t we have a defense that isn’t confused and out of position? At least Boise State’s defense was aggressive and blitzed Texas like crazy. That’s better than sitting back, getting no QB pressure, and still getting burned.

Look at our running stats the past 2 games (OSU’s top 2 RBs averaged 7.2 yards per carry) and then watch the tape. The LBers are out of position and then take bad angles. They are also not fast / athletic enough to cover RBs or TEs. Oregon has had better LB units when we were recruiting in the 10-20 range.
