The Oregon RB Rotation Needs to Change
“Noah Whittington ended up having a pretty good game with 97 yards, and even had a better yards per carry stat than Davison at 6.9 yards per carry” Great article. As I mentioned in my post below, 9 of Whittington’s 14 carries against Wisconsin were 2 yards or fewer. His averages are misleading because he’ll break a long run to improve his YPC. I’d rather have a RB who consistently gets 4-6 yards a carry. The offense will be playing ahead of the chains, most of the time. Davison appears to be the only RB on Oregon’s roster capable of that against better defenses, IMO. I would prefer to see Oregon rely on the ground game with Davison and then use play action off of it. I’m a Niners fan and Coach Stein should learn from Coach Shannahan. He is a master.

Brian Kelly at LSU? Fired. Who Are They & Other Teams Going to Replace HCs With?
Great post. There is too much money floating around and no patience. Can you imagine where Oregon would be if it fired Coach Brooks before the Rose Bowl? What about Coach Bellotti after a few of his “down” years, instead of showing patience and a commitment to someone who reportedly turned down more attractive head coaching jobs to stay at Oregon? Brian Kelly and James Franklin were considered two of the top coaches in college football. Who are these programs going to get that’s a clear upgrade, worth spending $50M to part ways with those coaches, plus whatever they are going to have to spend on the new coach? Is Nick Saban, Urban Meyer or even Chris Peterson going to give up their low pressure gigs to get back in the game? Are those programs as elite as their boosters, fans and administrations believe they are? How many teams can realistically compete for a national championship every year? Hopefully the top coaching prospects see how their peers were treated by these programs. It’s not like they need the money and do they need the unrealistic expectations and pressure, on top of starting over?

The QB Plot Thickens…
I’m sorry but that is no longer the world we live in. With the transfer portal, once a QB gets beat out they are going to transfer. The best you can hope for is for your backup QB to be serviceable if your starter is injured (which Brock was) and beat some average or below teams.

Browns’ Dillon Gabriel Doesn’t Care What You Think. His Focus is on Proving Himself
Maybe the Browns should have kept Sanders activated. Today would be a good day to see how he does in a regular season game.

The QB Plot Thickens…
We are not even sure if Oregon’s #1 QB can win a game against a “top-tier opponent.” LOL. I don’t know if Northwestern or Montana State is Oregon’s best win to date.

Jordon Davison is Oregon’s Best All Around RB
True freshman Jordon Davison is the best all around running back on Oregon’s roster. He should be starting and getting 20+ carries a game. I don’t know what the coaches are seeing. Whittington’s stats are misleading because he’ll have a bunch of runs less than 2 yards and then break a few to improve his YPC average. Last night, 9 of Whittington’s 14 carries were 2 yards or less (64%). That inconsistency puts an offense behind the chains and kills drives. Davison, on the other hand, might not break a 60+ yarder but consistently gashes a defense for 6-8 yard runs. Even when he is bottled up he seems to fall forward for a few yards. He grinds down a defense the more carries he gets. All of Whittington’s bigger runs came after that drive that our OL and Davison imposed their will and ran the ball right down Wisconsin’s throat, if I recall correctly. Unlike in nature, the thunder has to come before (and in greater quantities) than the lightning. Right now Oregon’s coaches have that backwards. I hope a reporter asks our coaches why Davison isn’t getting more carries based on his in game production. Whoa! What Are They Feeding Akili Smith Jr.?
At 0:15 in the below video Akili Smith, Jr. shows off his wheels/athleticism. He is certainly faster and more athletic than Dante Moore. Very similar to Justin Herbert, IMO. Hopefully our coaches take advantage of his full skillset, like we did with Herbert in the Rose Bowl Game, especially if he’s up to 220/230, as reported. With that frame, he can absorb hits and dish out sole punishment himself. Akili Smith, Jr.’s upside is off the charts.

Whoa! What Are They Feeding Akili Smith Jr.?
I hope our coaches design the offense to let Smith, Jr. use his legs as a weapon, when he gets an opportunity. He is quick and with that size, he will also truck defensive backs.

Browns’ Dillon Gabriel Doesn’t Care What You Think. His Focus is on Proving Himself
DG led the Browns to their second victory of the season. He is playing it safe but is also making some nice throws and he has the legs to make things happen. The focus is what Cleveland will do about Sanders before the trade deadline.

Sark to the NFL?
There’s no doubt that Texas is one of the most attractive positions in college football but it seems important for the head coach there to have strong ties to the state and high school football coaches. Will Stein may be a better option, IMO, but I’m sure that they will swing for the fences.

Oregon Football: Are the Ducks Postseason-Ready?
We have faced one very good team this year and failed the test. In that game, our QB looked like a first year starter. Unfortunately, we will not play another national championship contender the rest of the regular season (UW or USC could make the playoffs, if they win the rest of their games but they have too many holes to be serious challengers this year) so we won’t see how we measure up until the post season. I’m just not sure how our offense performs against an Ohio State, Texas, Miami defense, if we couldn’t handle what Indiana threw at us at home. Is Oregon’s defense good enough to win those games, if the offense is only able to score 10-14 points? Hopefully, the team continues to improve each week and Dante completes against our starting defense in practice and they throw everything at him. The Indiana loss seems to have lit a fire under the team’s a#% so I don’t believe that motivation will be an issue.

The B1G Blows
I wonder if Penn State’s numbers include all of the state’s campuses, not just the flagship in University Park. It didn’t feel like that much bigger of a campus to me compared to a UCLA or a Washington.
-
The B1G Blows
The B1G is no better than the PAC-12 was. In fact, the PAC-12 was probably deeper. You just have inflated rankings due to the media bias. Most years, the PAC-12 had a couple of really strong teams (Washington and Oregon the final season, Stanford and Oregon during the Chip Kelly years) and anyone in the conference could beat you, if you didn’t show up, especially on the road. USC has been down for a long time (and that didn’t help the image of the PAC-12) but under Coach Carroll they were the best program in college football. Ohio State is as good as any program in the nation right now (I’m not sold on Indiana and we’ll see how good our Ducks are). Is anyone worried about losing to Rutgers, Maryland, Northwestern, etc al. Heck some teams can’t even score an offensive touchdown. It’s funny watching some of the top teams from new conferences going into the State of Arizona and losing. That Stanford can beat you, if you don’t bring it.

If Pac-12 Money Had Been Different....How Would You Feel About it NOW?
And they did it earning a partial media share and a fraction of the budget as an Ohio State, Texas, et al!
-
If Pac-12 Money Had Been Different....How Would You Feel About it NOW?
The benefits goes way beyond financial though. It’s the respect/prestige of the conference. It’s the visibility. It’s ability to attract and retain players and coaches. It’s the seat at the “grown up” table. My biggest fear, before Oregon joined the B1G, was not being at the table and potentially being left behind. I still believe eventually there will be 2 super conferences and they will control everything about college football from the playoff format, rules, etc. If you are not a part of those conferences, you will get the scraps. We are starting to see that with the B1G/SEC discussions. Anyone think that the ACC will survive past the expiration of their media rights deal? Hopefully the two super conferences also look at the existing members became there are a couple of programs who don’t belong based solely on merit. I do miss the traditional rivalries of the PAC-8/10 and the regional nature of the conference but, unfortunately, that is in the past and you have to look towards the future.

The Quarterback Conspiracy Theory or I am So Confused.
I haven’t seen this before anywhere. Usually there is a solid backup pecking order but each week the #2 QB seems to change this year at Oregon. Perhaps Brock Thomas beat the other QBs out? Maybe we see someone else get the second string reps next week?
-
C'mon....Admit You Were Surprised With the Game...
I was surprised with how the Ducks completely put it on Rutgers in the first half. They were pissed off and took it out on the Scarlet Knights. At least we know this team will not roll over and die like Penn State did. Credit to the players from putting the Indiana game behind them and traveling all the way across the country to kick some a#%. Keep improving week after week so you are peaking at the end of the year.

First and goal Vandy. LSU is out of timeouts. Time for the victory formation (unless they want to pull the Mario).

Vandy’s RB just popped a 40 yard run. They have the ball at LSU’s 15 yard line with 2:33 remaining.
