This is a good sign for Danno and the Ducks.

LSU's class is dealt a blow with the loss of nation's top wide receiver, 5-star Dakorien Moore.

According to some of the recruiting pundits he is considered a 'heavy Texas lean' at the moment and is not visiting Eugene this weekend due to his track meet.

  2. "Dan Lanning cut his teeth on the other side of the ball.  Oregon is aggressive, but they don't take a ton of chances and make a ton of mistakes on defense. Lanning, from that Nick Saban tree, knows how to call a defense."

I will go out on a long limb and say that unlike other coaches at Oregon from that Nick Saban tree (won't name names but you know) Dan knows how to coach and surround himself with people who he collaborates with as opposed to being a micromanger who can't get out of his own way.

From their B1G Show last night...

"Big-10 can't wait to welcome Oregon, as they are considered by many to be a preseason favorite to win the B1G."

"After a loss to Georgia, Oregon went 22-4 under Dan Lanning and never lost by more than four points, thus they were in every game and will compete for the B1G Championship in year one."

"....To keep that culture together in the portal era? It's something special. Lanning also had a top-2 (in B1G) recruiting class. He's right up there with Ohio State and Michigan with getting premier players, and I think Lanning will be like that for a long time."

"This team is not going to take a back seat to Ohio State or Michigan with their skill players that we saw on display. Whether it is contested catches, whether it is absolute ropes being hauled in by fingertips or great moves from the running backs and wide receivers.  They will not take a back seat to anyone with the ability of their skill players to make plays with things break down."

"I can see Oregon with that offensive scheme putting up some big numbers against some traditional powerhouse defenses in the B1G."

I have three reactions to it; first I appreciate their observation of what Oregon has done on offense, and how they recognize how we are loaded for this year to score among the nations best again.

Second...their observation about out defense is correct; we take chances on defense, but they are lower risk while trying to create a play or turnover.  For example our simulated blitzes may send only four, but the offense does not know where from, thus pressure can occur.  And, when we run a corner blitz, it is usually from the short side of the field, so that we can run a zone coverage over there, and have the safety cover the wide-out.

Third...(above) somebody has to tell them how to say "Eugene, Oregon."  It is not YOU-gene, but you-GENE with the emphasis on the second syllable.  Geez.

    Second to when they ORY-GONE

  4. Mario was never able to talk about anything other than football for fear he would not be the smartest man in the room.  Dan does not have that fear hence his conversations with John are more free flowing and Dan gives you a glimpse into his life away from football.

Dan is approachable.   Mario was not (in any way) and I say that from having interacted with both (not extensively in any manner but a bit personally) and had the opportunity to observe both of them in social settings and suffice it to say it was night and day difference.

I heard this afternoon the deceased was a homeless man that confronted the player with a weapon (hammer), the kid hit him with his car, possibly in self defense, fled home and called his coach, and that alcohol was involved. Still a lot to unpack.

Yes, heard the same with reference to the deceased.  Also heard the part about Austen being confronted with the hammer.

Have heard mixed stories on the alcohol.  As you said lots more info to come out most likely.

  6. Fair to note that Ruiz is related to Mario's wife.   I don't know exactly how but it's reasonably close, i.e. cousins of something of that nature.

I also was recently told by someone with a line in the HDC that NO ONE in athletics was disappointed when it was learned that Mrs Cristobal would no longer be residing in Eugene.   Apparently she was not well liked.   No details other than no disappointment at her departure.

Self-defense element, homeless guy with hammer killed…so I hear. Underage drinking doesn’t help. Really sucks all the way around.

Not sure it involved alcohol.   I have heard that story is making the rounds but was also told this is a 'very nuanced' situation.  Not sure what that means in the big scheme of things.   Certainly time will tell.

  8. This is beyond troubling.  I know we spar with our Dawg friends and not always good naturedly, but this is beyond the game on the field.

I tend (read try very hard) to not comment too much on these types of issues because it could happen to us.  There was the episode with Traeshon last year and many people jumped all over Dan for acting too quickly.  I don't know all the details of that situation but what I was told is Dan has very, very clear and strict rules on that type of behavior as I am sure all coaches do.

The net here, this is bad and there are certainly some folks at UW who have some serious questions to answer.  Hope the victims can move forward and find peace and solace.

I get a kick out of the kicker who moved from Corvallis to Eugene, That's enough Beaver kicks for me. But maybe I'm a Sapp?

Will Canzano blame the transfer on the Ducks?

No that's Daschel's specialty.   You know that evil empire  40 miles south ruled by Phil Knight.  Remember OS, by their own acclamation in the TV add is 'built not bought'.

Overreaction to a 'generic' quote from Dan. Kind of like what Ryan Day said when O'Brien left before Chip came on board as the new OC.

There are exits and then there are John Wilkes Booth exits. Sic Semper Oregon!

There have been some whispers that Locklyn entertained conversations from both USC and Tennessee.  The fact that he listened may have rubbed Dan the wrong way.  As Hayward and Kirkland said it plausible there is some there there.  We will likely never know All the details and that's okay.

Dan has always said he is very supportive of his staff taking the next steps in their career.  He always preaches 1% better and I'm sure he applies that to when he has to replace a staff member.

The fact that Lock’s guys didn’t fumble is a huge selling point for him. I also get the sneaking suspicion that Chip and Gary Campbell were involved.

How would Chip and Campbell be involved?

I know Locklyn had him at practice on occasion but not following how they would have been involved.

  12. Lock was not considered a great recruiter.  Sure he got Whittington and Bucky from the portal.  He got Limar and Dowdell from HS but Dowdell left because he knew he would be at least 4th on the depth chart this coming season.

I was told his recruiting chops were considered below average  by multiple people with contacts in the AD so he may have been looking around.

  13. Just going to add this for consideration and context- Mullens is very astute financially and has earned respect among his peers for that. That is also one of the reasons that his name surfaces when jobs open.

Scholz also has deep background in economics - here is his bio for reference:

My point is, I have to believe that both Mullens and Scholz along with others in athletics like Eric Roedl (who like Mullens is a CPA) analyzed this situation a million ways to Sunday.  I am sure they had every possible data point possible and used every analytics tool possible to figure out the best path forward.

Please don't take this as defending anyone or the process or even agreement with the final outcome.   My point is I have to believe they considered all possible options and moved forward with the one that made the most sense from all possible angles for EVERYONE involved.

I get the frustration of keeping the OS game on the schedule as opposed to TT and the big payout to OS and WSU.  Imagine the optics if Oregon had said no way to playing that game.  No one from OS WILL EVER admit it, but they need that game on their schedule way more than Oregon does and that rubs alot of UO people the wrong way too.

It's the proverbial rock and a hard place and in the famous words of Bruce Springsteen, 'nobody wins unless everybody wins'.
