Oregon Football. Where Do the Ducks Sit in the B1G Packing Order? Top Tier Baby!

Recommended Posts

247 Sports has listed the 16 college football (CFB) teams in 2023 with Blue Chip Rosters (BCR.) 5 of the 16 ranked BCR teams are members of the B1G and to be B1G, including 2024 members OREGON and USC. BCR rosters have 50% or more 4* and 5* recruits recruited over the last 4 seasons. No school won a BCS title or a CFB Playoff title to date, without having a BCR. (In 2023, Alabama sits at #1 with a 90% (!) BCR roster.)

The 2023 BCR ranking of B1G and to be B1G schools.

2. Ohio State - 85%.

9. OREGON - 67%.

13. Penn State - 55%.

14. Michigan - 54%

15. USC - 52%

247 Sports has also ranked the top 2023 Transfer Portal classes. 5 B1G and to be B1G schools are ranked in the top 25.

5. USC

9. OREGON

10. UCLA

19. Michigan

24. Wisconsin.

What jumps off the page here? How about Dan Lanning getting it done in both recruiting high schools and the transfer portal?

OREGON is in the top tier of talented B1G and to be B1G teams.

Having doubts about the move to the B1G? I hope you had the opportunity of watching the B1G Network's fantastic coverage of the B1G expanding from 16 to 18 members with the addition of OREGON and UW. Compared to Larry's Loser Network, OREGON just traded in a horse-and-buggy for a Tesla. OREGON just moved up from the Frosh football team to being a starter on the Varsity team. OREGON will no longer be hidden under Pac-12 Network wet blanket.

Taking a discount to move up? How about instead of viewing this completely logical long-term move as paying a premium for a future media money commodity?

Next up? What will the 2024 schedule look like? I expect OREGON's permanent scheduling partners will undoubtedly be UCLA, USC, and UW. Oregon is now a part of "East Coast Bias." This matters. Last season Michigan played Colorado State, Hawaii, and UConn out-of-conference (OOC) with the games all played in Ann Arbor. Michigan was the CFB Playoff #2 seed.

In 2022, Ohio State played Notre Dame, a big-time OOC opponent, no doubt, Arkansas State, and Toledo OOC with all games played in Columbus. A one-loss Ohio State without a conference championship was the 2022 CFB Playoff #4 seed.

Oregon will no longer be dragged down by the reputation of its conference. No longer dragged down by an unseen and unavailable network. Nationally relevant because rightly or wrongly, a win over Michigan State will be valued far more than a win over ASU. And Dan Lanning with a B1G Deal to sell? Watch Out!

HUZZAH!

Ranking the Big Ten teams that we can't wait to see Oregon play

No matter your feelings about the Oregon Ducks leaving the Pac-12 Conference for a spot in the Big Ten on Friday, there is one aspect of the deal that is largely undeniable, no matter who you are.

The marquee matchups that we are set to get over the coming years with the Ducks playing Big Ten teams is going to be incredibly enthralling, simply from an entertainment standpoint.

While it is a bummer that we are missing out on yearly rivalries between Oregon and Stanford, or Washington State, we are also gaining annual or semi-annual matchups between the Ducks and Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State.

Some of the best teams in the nation reside in the Big Ten now, and Oregon will get to play amongst them. So which opponents are we looking forward to seeing play the Ducks the most? Here are our rankings (excluding the western contingent of former Pac-12 schools):

Traditional Blue Bloods are not going to like it. But nothing they can do about it. Ducks are here to stay.

USC knew what many other Blue Bloods are going to learn. Its why they did all they could to black list UO from the B1G.

The P12 leg irons have been removed. Ducks true potential will finally be realized now that the p12 is no longer a drag.

Great post JJ.

JJ, it was refreshing to watch and listen to the positive view of the Ducks on the BIG Network........

No negative, no talking down and zero east coast bias toward the Ducks.

The announcers and their guests were genuinely excited about both brands being added to the conference.

With the addition of the 4 west coast schools and their media markets the BIG is and will be the strongest Coast to Coast Conference in CF.

With a network in place that reaches millions more viewers for OBD's.

Doesnt matter if BIG fans love us or hate us. Millions more will be watching.....

GO DUCKS........

Oregon's all-time record against new Big Ten rivals

With the news that Oregon is leaving the Pac-12 for the greener pastures of the Big Ten, we thought it would be a good idea to see how the Ducks have fared against their so-to-be new rivals and peers.

Oregon has played every current member of the Big Ten except Maryland and Rutgers, with the Ducks having some pretty good success. The only team that has had its way with Oregon, not surprisingly, is Ohio State as the Buckeyes have won nine of the 10 meetings. That one Duck win, however, came in the last meeting as Oregon ran over and through Ohio State in the Horseshoe.

The Big Ten Conference is about to have a lot of members out west, but this is how the Ducks have done against the conference’s current teams.

FYI: Gene Smith is Ohio State AD

Gene Smith: B1G's viewership with latest additions 'is going to be ridiculous'

Gene Smith was just like the rest of the country on Friday, reacting to the latest round of realignment news as Ohio State’s AD.

As the Pac-12 continues to crumble, the B1G landed Oregon and Washington as additions beginning in 2024. That brings the Ducks and Huskies to the league at the same time as USC and UCLA. The Big 12 also landed 3 programs from the Pac-12 in Arizona, Arizona State and Utah.

In a conversation with Bill Rabinowitz of The Columbus Dispatch, Smith revealed he had an inkling last week that things might start falling after a conversation with Colorado AD Rick George in Indianapolis.

As for the new additions, Smith admitted Oregon and Washington bring major value to the B1G’s television partnerships.

Gene Smith believes the latest additions of Oregon and Washington will bring the B1G's value to another level.

In the B1G, when Geno and Michigan reps talk, people listen.

As the signing up of OREGON and UW proves, Traveler is no longer the lead pony in the B1G.

How Will The Oregon Ducks Perform In The Big Ten?

Last summer, USC and UCLA announced their planned exit from the Pac-12 conference to join the Big Ten. They are not the only ones. On Friday, the Washington Huskies and the Oregon Ducks informed the Pac-12 president that they accepted an offer from the Big Ten.

The Big Ten is now a conference with eighteen teams. This makes it the largest conference in football history. If the conference adds more teams, it will be hard to justify calling it the Big Ten.

Given that the Oregon Ducks have been a member of the Pac-12 since 1915, this is quite a historic move. Of course, this move will have Oregon Ducks fans questioning how this school will measure up as a member of the Big Ten conference. We will examine that more in this piece.

Since 2000, where does Oregon stand among the best of the best in Big Ten Conference?

There is a prominent belief in the world of college football that when it comes to the best conferences in the nation, the Big Ten stands among the best of the best.

Obviously, it is impossible to dethrone the SEC when it comes to accolades. Since 2000, 14 of the 22 national champions in college football have come from the South Eastern Conference, including six of the last eight.

The Big Ten has a pair of championships under its belt in that time period, though, and schools from that conference are routinely near the top of the rankings and in contention every single season.

There should be no confusion about why the Oregon Ducks wanted to jump from the Pac-12 to the Big Ten in the latest round of conference realignment, where they will now be aligned with some of the best teams in the nation, including Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Wisconsin, and Iowa, among others.

But when you look at that history over the past couple of decades, where do the Ducks stand when it comes to national prominence?

To answer that question, we looked at how many times each team in the conference — newly expanded to 18 teams with the additions of the USC Trojans, Washington Huskies, and UCLA Bruins — found themselves ranked inside the AP Top 10.

Here’s where Oregon stacks up...

Since the year 2000, few teams in the Big Ten have been as good as the Ducks when it comes to the AP rankings.

Charting Big Ten Football 2021-2022

In late June of 2022, when UCLA and USC announced they would join the Big Ten, I determined that the end of the Pac-12, Oregon joining the new conference, and the need to expand my film library and player database were inevitable.

In early July of last year I began acquiring and charting the tape of every Big Ten football game played against FBS opponents in 2021 and 2022 I hadn’t already reviewed, and by last month had completed the project.

With this past weekend’s announcement that Oregon and UW will in fact become members of the Big Ten for the 2024 football season along with the LA schools, I prepared a simple statistical regression of the dataset from charting those games, using the same system with which I’ve been writing about Oregon’s Pac-12 and notable non-conference opponents for more than a decade.

This article summarizes each Big Ten team using that statistical system, as an overview of the Ducks’ new conference.

With the addition of usc and ucla to the BIG it was like adding the cute kid with layered blond hair. There was a wow factor, those cali kids are pretty, and cool to look at.

With the addition of Oregon to the BIG it is like the kid moving to town who has a skateboard, and can do tricks. You don't just want to look like him, you want to do what he does and be like him.

The addition of a husky to the BIG is like we already have a husker, a cat, gopher, badger and a wolverine who can destroy a dawg, oh well.

The addition of Oregon to the BIG is going to change the conference, for the better. You can try and regulate against us, like many do with skateboarders, but, in the end, you will just learn to like it, try it, and probably be like it.

They won't. The formula is pretty straightforward and has been in place since the BCS era.

1. Undeafed + Power Conference

2. One loss + Power Conference + Conference Champion

3. One loss + Power Conference + blue blood

4. Group of Five undefeated + conference champion + major quality wins + multiple years proving this = in (only happened once and that required a covid season)

4. 2 loss power conference champion

5. 2 loss power conference with quality wins and ideally a blue blood.

I don't see the formula changing. I probably forgot something in my formula there.

A couple of other reasons why going B1G was the correct move.

Greg Sankey, the SEC commissioner and likely the most powerful man in CFB after the ESPN and Fox powers-that-be, has already called for a change in the 2024 playoff format. With the Pac-12 (RIP) demise, Sankey wants 5 and not 6 conference champs to receive automatic bids. And he also wants seeding to be changed to reflect the playoff committee rankings.

Using Athlon's 2023 Preseason Top 25, the field in 2024 be the following. (All teams at-large except for the 5 conference champions.)

1. Georgia - SEC

2. Michigan - B1G

3. Ohio State

4. Alabama

5. USC

6. LSU

7. FSU - ACC

8. Penn State

9. UW

10. Utah - B12

11. Texas

12. Tulane - AAC

5 B1G teams - 2. Michigan, 3. Ohio State, 5. USC, 8. Penn State, 9. UW

4 SEC teams - 1. Georgia, 4. Alabama, 6. LSU, 11. Texas

1 ACC team - 7. FSU

1 B12 team - 10. Utah

1 AAC team - 12. Tulane

Obviously, this ranking will not be used in 2023 let alone 2024/25 but I think the B1G will have 4 or 5 teams in the field every season and that Oregon will more often than not be one of the teams.

Another reason to go B1G. Canzano reports that part of the deal with Oregon and UW joining the B1G is that come 2031, Oregon and UW will be full-share revenue members of the B1G.

2024 as of now has 6 highest ranked conference champions, regardless of record, in the field. I expect this will drop from 6 to 5 conference champions and 7 and not 6 at large bids by 2024, Why, because that's what the Power 2 want.

The only thing not in the formula are the changes necessary to make it a 12 game pool.

It looks like they are taking the top 6 rated conference champions plus the top 6 rated non-champions. Of course, all of the above will help them sort out the top non-champions.

Conference champions will get an auto bid .. but most will still fit the criteria I posted.

And just because there is a conference champion doesn't guarantee them a good seeding. They just get to get seeded.

The format for 2024 is indeed the 6 highest ranked conference champs today, with the 4 highest conference champs receiving a 1st round bye. but with the demise of the Pac-12 Greg Sankey wants 5 conference champs and an additional at-large pick.

Come 2026 if the playoff stays at 12 teams I think we'll see the top 4 ranked teams with byes regardless of conference championships.

Last season Utah would have had a bye but not Ohio State. The B1G bye would have gone to Michigan; Michigan could have used it.
