Will Conference Championship Games Replace the Old Pac 12 Cannibalization?

Recommended Posts

Interesting article.

If the SEC stays with their division format, a team staying home with one loss could benefit from a contestant in the CShip game getting their second loss which they wouldn't have gotten if they had stayed home.

Glad to see I'm not the only one that thinks they need to die. 2026 should be 16-20 team playoff and no conference championships.

Sorry, I almost got sick when the the AD of Georgia said that the SEC title game is special, the Rose Bowl game between Pac 12 & Big 10 that was special. But they got rid of that for the CFP.

If you do not get rid of Championship games its going to cause problems.

With these big leagues and no divisions you are potentially going to have 3 and 4 teams tie for 1st or 2nd, try figuring those tie breakers out!

Then if you lose your leagues championship game the teams you were tied with, who did not make the game, move ahead of you and you miss out on the playoffs.

Not only that, if you make the CFP but do not play in the championship game you have a week off to get healthier.

Do you not think that Washington wishes we did not have a championship game?

In 20 years we will have six-12 team leagues with 2 division each for easy selection.

Just my thoughts

SEC is dropping divisions next season. Like the B1G, the top 2 SEC teams will play in the 2024 SEC champ game.

And miracles do happen! Bama is playing Georgia in the regular season in September of 2024.

Interesting that in this season's champ games Oregon and Bama in particular have a chance to make the PO, FSU the chance to fail, and perhaps Texas a way to find its way to the final Final 4.

But with Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, UW, and OREGON in a projected 2024 12-team playoff field, along with UGA, Texas, Bama, and Missouri, what purpose other than the all-mighty dollar, will conference champ games serve?

Call me dense (my wife often does) but how does a 12 team playoff work out - unless some teams play more games than others?  8 would have made more sense.  Then 16.  But 12?

12 becomes 6, becomes 3, becomes ____?  Does one team get a bye and if so, why?

I like it. Give conf champs motivation to win a conference. There's Something to be said for playing through though. Time to heal or maintain momentum and keep playing?

It's already happened!!!

Auburn in 2018 felt this first hand as Georgia beat them in the SEC championship game.

Auburn beat Alabama in the Iron Bowl.

So Auburn was dealt their second loss and eliminated from the CFP.

Bama got in with only one loss and wins the whole thing.

Ohio State slipped into the CFP last year because they only had one loss, to B1G champion Michigan, and basically because there wasn't another team with a decent record to add.

the CFP right now favors one loss teams over anyone with two losses. Championship games are a liability for a lot of teams and will continue to be.

With the larger playoff, it opens the door door for 2-loss conf champs.

That certainly would have benefited the PAC.

And w the B1G eliminating divisions, that might be a help down the line.

What makes sense is eight geographic conferences of 10 teams.  Every team plays every other team, that is nine conference games.  The eight conference champions play off for the NC.  Call those the “Major Conferences”.

Then have 40 teams in four minor conferences.  Every year the eight Major conference losers drop to the minors and the two top teams in the four minors move up.

Every game is important, particularly if you’re on the bubble to drop down or move up.

Lots of options for pre conference games and post season playoffs.

All TV revenue divided equally, 120 ways.
