Santa Rosa Duck No. 2 Share Posted October 4 I am thinking that this may be the new normal with the unrestricted Transfer Portal. We can have a virtually new team every year now and how long will it take for all these newcomers to gel is unkown.
HappyToBeADuck No. 3 Share Posted October 4 Charles, great assessment of the 2024 team. The talent and potential of the team is unlimited, the Ducks are 4-0. Yet i am uncertain and uneasy about OBD's.......... With spring snd summer practices Under their belt the Ducks O line was shaky the first 2 games. My concern was that the coaches had not prepsred a solid backup plan in case of injury. Charles you are right to be concerned, more than concerned about what will happen if another injury occurrs on the O line? The team appears fragile at times. A untimely mistake or penalty occurs and it takes awhile for them to recover. They are not consistent. They come out on fire in the 2nd half against BSU. They build a 2 score lead and as they sre driving to put the game on ice, they fumble The defense was caught off gusrd and in just a few minutes later the score is tied. Thankfully the offense drove the field to win the game. BSU is for real. They would hsve destroyed all 4 of tOSU opponents this season. The defense has played very well the last 8 quarters. They are rotating plsyers at will. With very little drop ofg, if any......this bodes well for the long season. The offense destroyed ucla in that first half. But they never seemed to recover from the pick 6......why? Are they thst fragile when adversity strikes? tOSU plsyers will be bringing a great deal of adversity to the game for our Ducks to face. We as fans will get a glimpse of whether the 2024 Ducks can be elite...... First we need to destroy Sparty with a 4 quarter performance in all 3 phases of the game. Say 52-12. I like this team...... nothing that a little home cooking and home crowd will make tonight. Consider this....depending on how the season unfolds, after tonight. OBD's could have 11 or 12 games left to get that Natty. Thats a full season. GO DUCKS.......
30Duck No. 4 Share Posted October 4 Rankings shouldn't be done before week 4, and pre-season hype is what it is, hype. This Oregon team might have the most "talent" ever assembled, but that shouldn't have been enough to anoint them champions. It wasn't just Duck fans who did this, Desmond and Herbie predicted the Ducks would win the Natty, though Herbie did say the Ducks would lose next week's game against his alma mater. There is still time for all the talent on this team to rise to the top, 4-0, without playing an A game is good, there was a win, over a team that had never lost to Oregon before, has a Heisman worthy running back and a good chance at making the playoff, in there. The schedule has worked out well. UCLA was a great first road game, Michigan State is a rugged team that Oregon can get some resistance from and begin to open the playbook up before the B1G game.
Drake Moderator No. 5 Share Posted October 4 I think DG was completely caught off guard with the sketchy play of the OL in the first two games. He was kind of forced to resort to the short outlet passes, and never got fully in sync with his receivers. The Boise State game was annoying because the offense continued to sputter. When the offense started gaining momentum, they immediately gave it right back with untimely errors. Like you stated the team has played well in short bursts. There is talent on the team, will they play together as a team and become dominant? Only time will tell. Tonight, the team needs to show continued improvement. DG getting in sync with the playbook, and his receivers would be helpful. That would go a long ways to making me feel that all the preseason accolades were warranted.
The Kamikaze Kid Moderator No. 6 Share Posted October 4 I think one of the problems OBD have been facing so far is just figuring out a solid rotation so the guys on the field can get used to each other. I think the O line issues while sorting out personnel were obvious for everyone to see. I think the figuring out linebacker and DB personnel has taking a little longer than expected as potential starters had to be replaced early do to injuries. In the end this may be a good thing as the players have been given the chance to show they belong on the field and the different combos have given the coaches enough tape to see which ones work best. The frustration of watching the team have less than anticipated results should turn into confidence that the team can keep it's composer in a crises when it counts. If the tOSU game comes down to the wire, the closer than we wanted Idaho and BSU finishes will be huge experience assets the Buckeyes won't have. As a fan I actually am finding the close games entertaining and the victories feel more earned than simply expected. I remember those deadly Stanford teams that would find themselves in 4th quarter nail biters not only against top ten Duck teams but also with bottom feeders. This team may end up being more like those teams than the blow out by halftime teams of the Mariota years. 2
David Marsh No. 7 Share Posted October 4 I think this is really a case where teams can have so many transfers that they need more adjustment time. Ole Miss apparently isn't entirely put together. Oregon is putting it together but we aren't quite there yet. Colorado has played one game against a Power 2 team and got wrecked by Nebraska. And they are continuing to live of miracles as their team is really only a few players. Moving forward into year 4 and 5 of the Lanning era will be interesting to watch as I would assume (and hope) the transfers become a bit fewer and we see more of his recruits emerge as major contributors. Remember... Georgia and Alabama (at least under Saban) don't recruit 5 stars to start as Freshman. They recruit 5 stars to become the backbone of the team in year two or three. 2

kirklandduck Moderator No. 9 Share Posted October 4 When you think about it, it's really not surprising. 3 seasons ago when Bo first transferred in he really didn't hit his groove until mid-season and that was with an established OL. DG has had an OL in chaos the first couple games but has performed well despite the circumstance. That being said, it would only be fair to expect that he won't find his own groove until mid-season as well.
Charles Fischer Administrator No. 10 Share Posted October 4 While I am not wild about all the different player rotations, it does help build depth on the team. It does so at the current expense of bigger, better final scores, but might end up helping the team enormously at the end of the season? I get that gradual improvement is gradual....but as a fan--it is hard to wait for! 2 Mr. FishDuck
30Duck No. 11 Share Posted October 4 Just found this floating around: Ohio State's offensive line was generally seen as a problem area heading into 2024, especially after its rather lackluster showing last year. So, it's not just OBD.
OregonDucks No. 12 Share Posted October 4 (edited) Another great article! With all of the transfers and injuries to key starters, it makes sense that the team hasn't gelled yet. Oregon has shown flashes of what they are capable of becoming. Time will tell if they can live up to their potential. I'm thankful for the easy schedule to start off the season to give the team time to work out the kinks and find themselves. I'm anxious to see how Oregon's offensive line holds up against better competition. Michigan State's defensive front should be a good test tonight and then we have some monsters coming into Autzen next Saturday. Autzen Magic No. 13 Share Posted October 4 With the respect to some of the rotations, I believe that the coaches are planning for a loooooong season. If the Ducks make the B1G championship game and lose, and then go on a run in the playoffs to the finals, they could play an unprecedented 17 games. That's a lot of wear and tear and depth will be critical. And for the record, I'm not disappointed. I love victories, regardless of how pretty or how ugly. It's all about the "W" and OBD have yet to suffer a "L". Go Ducks!!! 1
DanLduck No. 14 Share Posted October 4 Issues, not problems. I like that, and I agree. The Ducks have issues each week they can work to improve, not glaring problems. Call them growing pains. It's why we actually play the games. Nothing beats in-game experience. Tonight I want to see the continued improvement of our defense. I want to see few or none presnap penalties. And I want to see no easy points left on the field (like Tez missing a wide open Patrick). And no looking forward to next week. 1 game at a time. Let's Go Ducks!
