30Duck No. 2 Share Posted Friday at 02:00 PM Edge rushers, recruiting, championships will win. From Smart young Lanning learned he did. Lanning has infiltrated the B1G with an SEC West philosophy that caught Oregon's opponents completely off guard. This isn't the Oregon Ducks they've heard about. Winning the trenches! Oregon doesn't do that. They're finesse, they win "in space" Edge rushers are incredibly important, and the Ducks are loaded enough that without Jordan Burch in the lineup they beat Ohio State, and Matayo Uiagalelei has picked his game up. Elee has to like the situation at Oregon. 1 1
HappyToBeADuck No. 3 Share Posted Friday at 02:13 PM Sir Charles, as usual, you covered a number of key points and packed a great deal of thoughts to ponder. Well done! I so agree that all the 10 other players must execute at a high level in order for the Edge player to execute at a high level. Last year, the secondary was very good but not great. They could not lock down the darn huskies NFL caliber receivers. Injuries to key secondary players made it even nore difficult to cover. The 2024 secondary blanketed tOSU NFL receiver group to help with the victory. Uber talented transfers elevated the execition and depth. Nor could the 2023 front seven get to and contain Penix. Critical transfers have added interior strength, push and pressure. It appears that the Duck D is just stronger and quicker. Opposing QB's have their O Lineman shoved right in their face. Look st all the tip balls this year...... This power rush allows the Edge Rusher to cause chaos and havoc. As high level recruits watch on TV or from the sidelines on a visit, they can see themselves excelling in DL's defense. Especially at Edge.......with all the other positions filled with high 4 and 5 star players, well a uber talented, hard working Edge Rusher csm be showcased into a first round draft pick. The recruits DL and staff are recruiting want a shot at the NFL and this scheme allows all 11 position players to excel. GO DUCKS.... 1 1 1
Haywarduck Moderator No. 4 Share Posted Friday at 02:33 PM The recruitment at this position is relentless and creative. When Jordan Burch took the fake punt against the terps, an elite edge rushing recruit was on the sideline. Kind of reminds me of how we got DAT. You want to be on offense, come to Oregon. You want to be just another defender stay in Compton. Back then the explosive playmaker was the focus position, now it is the edge position. Hopefully we also see another rocket in the lineup too! After our first season, where there was seldom edge pressure, to what we see now makes one realize we may not be where Lanning wants us, but we can see it from here. 1 1
The Kamikaze Kid Moderator No. 5 Share Posted Friday at 03:53 PM Another great article! I'm really looking forward to the day that Lanning's high school recruits start filling out the position charts and portal guys come in to fill in a few gaps here and there. With so many portal guys currently occupying the first team slots, it's hard to know who rises up and claims the starter positions and who's going to be playing behind the next wave of portal starters. As of right now, the two and three deep at most positions are being taken by many four and some five star players. I'm hoping they become the starters of the future. 1
Jon Joseph Moderator No. 6 Share Posted Friday at 04:23 PM Georgia defeated Texas? I don't believe They've Heard This Through the Grapevine. Terrific article. Great to have more detail regarding the D Danno is installing in Duck Territory. Signing day will soon be here, December 4th, and the Portal opens shortly thereafter. It Never Rains on Danno's recruiting process. A process he learned from two master recruiters before going Westward Ho! Thanks Charles, Waste Washington! 1
Just Ducky No. 7 Share Posted Friday at 04:41 PM Nice take Charles. It sure seems that when the Ducks need the defense to turn it up a notch it happens. Last Saturday nights game was a prime example. When the badgers needed to move the ball at the end of that game they could not. That defense was tired and still managed to stone Wisconsin when it mattered most. Studs are everywhere on that side of the ball and getting Birch back just makes us deeper. Great time to be a Duck. Club the Mutts! 1 1
EastBayDuckDad Moderator No. 8 Share Posted Friday at 04:42 PM One elite edge player a year, that's all we ask. As Charles astutely identified in the lead and many have repeated in this thread, this priority in recruiting and development is the driving force for a championship level defense. . Road block DTs, solid ILBs and lock down DBs are crucial in the 4-2-5, but they allow the star of the show to be the havoc creating Edge, keeping the QB in the pocket and disrupting any throw that takes longer than one-one thousand, two-one thousand. It's why Garrett, Clowney, Watt, Bosa, Hutchinson, Hendrickson and Crosby (and KT) are all household names and 1st round picks. And why OTs like Sewell and Alt are drafted right next to them to prevent those household names from knocking the QB into an MRI scanner. If Burch can stay healthy down the stretch, the 1-2 punch with MatayoU (and Tuioti as more of an OLB) on the edge is championship level stuff. And there is great talent waiting in the depth chart with Purchase, Winston and Rushing. I have no doubt that they would be starting for nearly any BIG team not named Oregon, tOSU and maybe Michigan. To add Elee and maybe another 4-5☆ to that list for 2025 will potentially push OBD into that elite Georgia category. Yep, you can see it from here and it appears that DL and TL can too. 1
Jon Joseph Moderator No. 9 Share Posted Friday at 05:21 PM Recruiting and player development matter, no doubt. But in today's CFB you also have to be a primo portal picker with the alchemy skills to blend in the newbies. SEE: FSU in 2023 compared to the Seminoles in 2024. Who knew that OBD would bring in the better Uiag? Thank goodness for Burch, Harmon, Chadwell, and the DBs who Danno and Division Street scored. Burch underperformed last year and dealt with injuries, while Matayo, Tuioti and others were still just newbies learning the ropes. This year's defensive line would have been the difference to win those close games with the Huskies. Danno knew that, thus why he got them, and really helped the development of the young-guns to flourish. I've gotta think that Tosh being a former defensive lineman and D-Line coach has really helped their progress as well. 1 1 4 Mr. FishDuck
Notalot No. 11 Share Posted yesterday at 04:18 PM Burch is NFL ready now. Tuioti and Uiagalelei have made leaps developmentally and become great. Popo and Caldwell plug the middle, go low, defeat multiple blockers, and penetrate the opposing line creating immense pressure on the QB. The Ducks are deep at DL led by Harmon, Washington, and Ware-Hudson. Developing behind them are Xadavien Sims, My’Keil Gardner, Jericho Johnson, Josh Simmons, and Terrence Green. This may be the best defensive line ever. With the size, strength, speed and skills of the players on the roster it will become even better next year. Go Ducks!

Coach Lanning and Tosh don't ask much from their defenders: * Inside linebackers: Must be big enough to take on blockers and stop the run but athletic enough to run sideline to sideline * Nose Tackle: Must be a two gap run stuffer, who requires double teams * Strongside DE: Must be able to make sacks and cover the perimeter * DBs: Need lockdown corners * Safeties: Need speed and the ability to make big hits * STAR: Need to play like a linebacker, defensive end and cover in space It sounds as though they just need 11 future NFL players on the field with some future pro bowlers sprinkled in (e.g., inside linebackers, DEs, STAR). Luckily, there aren't many recruiters better than Coach Lanning, Tosh and the rest of the staff. 1

Oregon has had better individual defensive lineman (e.g., Ngata, Thibs) but, I agree, I can't recall a defensive line with more talent and production across the entire front (and the depth coming off the sidelines to keep everyone fresh is also very impressive). What are some of Oregon's best defensive lines, prior to this season?
