Whatever many of us may think about Mario's in-game management, he deserves a pat on the back (lesser extent Taggart) for demonstrating to the Oregon establishment that it was possible to go nation-wide in recruiting and get players to commit all the way out in Ory-gone far from their mother's home cooking.

Who knows the details on Ward.  Cristobal is being tight lipped about any deal they had for him to play at least a half.   The first half vs second half comparison may actually have enhanced NFL interest in him, because I don't think the second half had wholesale substitutions at other positions.

Not only did Ward give a gigantic F/U to his teammates, but MariN0 tried to pass his way to victory, with an inexperienced qb, when he had a relatively effective run game available.

Mari(o) did his part to help Cam achieve a scam record before taking a seat as the fighting (on the sidelines) Mari(o) Men helped the ACC to a 1-9 Bowl record.

Here are our winners and losers from the most wonderful day of the college football bowl year.

This is what happens when you play 8 conference games. Lots of mediocre teams go Bowling and get beat down and beat up. 😜

The good news? One of the litigants lost. 🤓

I have yet to confirm that after watching UConn curb stomp the Tar Heels, Billy has decided to stay retired and work out to keep up with his granddaughter, er, girlfriend, and Stevie boy is out of a job. 🍻

Hmmm ... Cyclones vs. Hurricanes.  Which was the bigger disaster?

Glad we Ducked that storm.

So glad Mario called a time out, just before the score by IOWA ST!

That defense was READY!

The lead changes  by 1 point with less than a minute for the MariN0s to respond!

Mario "TO" Cristobal

Dude's a master time out caller.

If I was Cam Ward, with so much at risk, I would have simply completely passed on playing in that meaningless bowl game.

However, to step onto the field with the apparent sole intent of breaking a record, and then leave your teammates hanging in the wind as you walk off into the sunset with your record and impending wealth, is my definition of bs.

If your going to choose to step onto the field -- for your own glory, at least don't abandon your teammates in the process.

Heisman winner RGlll has an opinion,

“Same people criticizing Cam Ward for sitting out the 2nd half of the Pop Tarts Bowl, would be saying how dumb it was for him to play if he got hurt,” Griffin wrote in a post to X. “He didn’t have to play AT ALL. Instead he gave us a half of jaw dropping plays. Stop villainizing these student athletes.”

If Ward had been worried about getting injured, he wouldn't have played at all. He wanted the record and would have played as long as needed to get it, and please, "victimizing student athletes"?

Every Mario loss is a happy day to me😅

Ward shouldn’t have played at all, including bowl practices, if he was worried about getting injured.

College football is not the same as it used to be - Cam Ward was getting $1M+ to play for Miami this season (is NIL only good for the regular season?) and I’m sure he had NFL Draft insurance, in case of injury.

It’s time to realize that most of these players are no longer “student athletes” playing for a scholarship. They are semi-pro athletes and the expectations should be as such.

This is the worst possible thing Ward could have done for his football future. I mean I guess he leaves a legacy with that statline that may never be broken due to the extra year of eligibility he got.

But he's shown his true colors, in it for me, not for thee.

You talk about making it hard to be a leader in the locker room, OMG, every time he opens his mouth there will be distrust of his intentions.

What transpired here is a great example of Mario’s inability to build and cultivate team culture.

He talked a ‘big game ‘ when he was at Oregon about culture and family yet it was only talk.  Guys on the team at that time said there was relatively little culture and no feeling of family.  One player who played for both MC and Dan shared that Mario never had team functions at his home.

Dan has a totally different approach.  Not only does he regularly have the team to his home, he stresses that his door is open anytime for a player to come over and hang out.  Many do go to his home on a regular basis.  This says something IMO.

Not the same as Ward, but one of the reason's that Royce Freeman never comes to my mind when I think of the greatest Oregon RB's is because my lasting impression of him is, after opting out. walking around in his street clothes as the Ducks lost the Las Vegas Bowl to Boise State, Mario was the interim coach at the time.

Dan Lanning is Coach Taylor.

I was admittedly a cam Ward fan when he was a coug but this might cost him a few spots in the draft. Oh Wait, Chicago likes to draft bad QBs.

The defense must not have been physical enough.

Nowhere near enough physicality.
