Are Duck Fans Suffering from PTSD?

Recommended Posts

What a season it’s been for the Oregon Ducks. The team went 12-0 through the regular season and then on Saturday night they secured the B1G Championship by defeating Penn State. The Ducks have done what few predicted in their first year; they have defeated all the B1G blue bloods on their way to going undefeated. Even Mr. FishDuck spent ...

Although most of 2018 was forgettable, this was not.

OBD's biggest year of dashed dreams, was 2007. Dixon was the presumptive Heisman winner; the team couldn't be stopped. But enough about that.

The Ducks definitely have the hardest path to the Natty, but rather than a panic   I'm feeling a calmness; the flu revelation, ironically makes me feel even better about the Ducks putting a bow on the most dominant season in college football history.

Lanning's "Opportunity" outlook isn't just inspirational.

I never felt as confident about those other Ducks teams to get the 'ship as I do about this team. They truly will have to beat themselves to be denied

I actually disagree, Oregon understands failure leads to success better than most programs. We don't expect success right away and this can be seen in how we hire, and foster coaches.

Oregon never has hired a coach and expected him to answer all our problems like most programs do. Most programs repeat this pattern, like North Carolina is doing right now. They look for their Messiah, and don't understand one person almost every time won't solve a program's issues. They suffer PTSD as they, deep down, know this is the same process which lead to the same outcome, and you can insert just about any program into this scenario.

It takes a program which will except failure, inexperience and just keeps supporting and fostering the successes.

Oregon is that program, and while many of us were raised as looking at us as the long shot, Lanning is even exorcising that mentality. I see letting go of 'The Pick' as another move toward redefining this program.

Lanning is building a program we can see becoming the dominant program. While there may be some PTSD from failure within the fanbase it doesn't transmit into the team of players, coaches and support staff Lanning is creating.

I feel that energy, and whether that works this season or the next I don't perceive that sense of trauma coming on. I feel the Lanning spirit which is guiding this program to a sustained ascendency that hopefully doesn't develop into entitlement.

My senses are aware of what Lanning is building. I am proud, but reserved, excited yet patient and all the potential PTSD is muted at best. Lanning's leadership to where we all want to go is overpowering and will lead us to the top in due time! GO DUCKS!

This is why I'm not going to be too heartbroken if this season doesn't end the way I want it to. This program looks like it's being built for the long haul. Even if DL leaves at some point his tenure will show potential coaches that Oregon is committed to the future, and it will be an attractive destination. From the dedication to building new facilities to the way the NIL is run, this program is set up to win. Nike doesn't just throw money at Oregon, they lend their sports science, equipment technology and business acumen to the Duck athletic programs.

One of my favorite things to see on social media is other fans complaining how Oregon is buying rosters. They don't understand how the program manages their NIL program. They think that if your throw a ton of money at something then winning will be the result. If that was the case, Auburn would be bathing in championships. Money helps, but management and leadership are the most important thing.

Oddly enough Oregon is NOT in the top 10 of schools that pay the most for their players (per unsubstantiated reports) but it is the current landscape. Money doesn't buy championships, Texas A&M spent more money than anyone before it was allowed, and they fired that coach!

If you're griping about it, fusky and beavis, try actually investing in football which makes your schools money! Oregon didn't get invited into the B1G and have to take a loan out to pay the entrance fee. Oregon made money by investing in the programs that helped build brand. Track town USA ring a bell?

Oddly enough, it's not the local rivals who are doing the most whining. It's the blue bloods who are used to being at the top of the food chain. They thought Oregon was nice story.  A flash in the pan with the fast offense and cool uniforms. Now that OBD is being built like them and getting the recruits that they're used to getting, they're mad as hell. They see Phil Knight and immediately blame his wallet.

I know I suffer from PTDS, Post-Traumatic Ducks Syndrome. The close-but seasons took a toll on me and have left me always a bit skeptical of climbing all the way to the top, this season included. It's gonna be tough.

I will also argue that the 2019 loss to ASU was a blessing in disguise. Had OBD made the playoff they would've faced LSU in the first round. Those dudes beat Oklahoma 63-28 in the first round. They would've beaten Mario's archaic system so badly that Miami would've never touched him.

Hate to say it out loud, but if the Ducks take down Tenn, Texas and Georgia, then the plane home needs a stop in Athens to panty raid and get this year's SEC trophy as the true champ of the SEC leaving the three loss possers in our wake.

I happen to think that Randy the Plumber has an accurate take on how other teams view going against Oregon.

My worst PTSD are memories of Stanford in the regular season.

We are 13-0 and I'm enjoying every minute of it.

While every fan base in the country says you're nothing until you win a Natty, I don't feel that way.

And certainly we are the best team in the country, but how many times in a row can you win with a single digit spread? The probabilities get worse with every game added to the gauntlet, and there have never been as many games to get through to win the Natty as there are now.

Which is why traditional playoff formats err on the side of giving the best teams the easiest path, to be sure the championship does not end up with team Cinderella vs team Lucky Charms playing a garbage game. (ASU vs. BSU for the Natty?)

We aren't even getting that courtesy.

So speaking on statistics alone we are probably not going to win the Natty, but I don't want it to invalidate just how fantastic this season has already been.

Injuries have been the cause of our most sever PTSD almost every time.  Come January 1, Oregon will be at their healthiest all season barring something terrible happening in practice.

Every team will have to overcome injuries and adversity to win it all, not just OBD.

In fact, one could argue that Oregon will be best positioned heading into round 2 because all teams advancing will have won dog fights in round 1.  OBD will be rested, healthy, and not overseeded.  I don't think Georgia is in a good place and their defense will not be good enough to carry them.

Great post, and I agree with you.

However, to win a championship so many things need to align. This year’s Oregon Football Team is special - they are a very close and unselfish group of fine young men who are on a mission, and they have some damn good football players, led by an extraordinary group of veterans. We have the best QB in college football who, despite being from the islands, has ice running through his veins and comes up with the big plays, in the biggest moments, against the best teams. We also had a relatively favorable schedule with Ohio State at home and Penn State at a neutral field, and stayed relatively healthy through the season.

I don’t doubt that Coach Lanning will continue to compete for B1G Championships and be a factor in the playoffs, with the talent he is bringing to Eugene, for years to come. I just wouldn’t under appreciate what we have right in front of us this season.

If Oregon loses in the playoffs, I’ll be disappointed but extremely appreciative of what this team gave us this year because I know they left it all out on the field.

FEBU and GO DUCKS!!!

Many of those same schools also bought players via boosters. Now they are upset because NIL has allowed programs like Oregon to compete for those players legally, leveling the playing field between us.

More teams have joined the chorus, but I don't think any team will be louder on this than Washington.

Older lifelong Oregon fans have EARNED PTSD from Oregon in football and men's basketball snatching defeat from the jaws of victory time and again.  Also I always feel like we will have some huge lead and blow it (thanks Cal) or have a 3/4 court heave in basketball to lose it.  Or have a huge rushing effort by some random guy against us or something.

I have two pills for my PTSD: Dan Lanning and Dillon Gabriel. When I am really in need I add Tez Johnson and Matayo Uiagaelei into the rotation of pills and I'm way relaxed brah!!

Let's GO Ducks!! OOOOOOOOO
