Thanks, Smitty. It's fun to ponder. If the threshold is winning the Heisman, then I say, 'Yes.'

Travis Hunter having his # retired at CU? Fine. Shedeur and not Kordell Stewart? In Shedeur's case, I have to ask the nepotism question.

I think Oregon should continue with the tradition of not retiring a player's number.

There's a display of his Heisman Trophy in the H-D complex. Fans can see it, touch it, take pictures of it/with it. I think that's a better tribute than retiring his number.

Do what we do, it’s fine.

Ditto CU. If they’re into retiring the number of a 2 year QB that led them to a 9-4 year his senior year with an Alamo Bowl loss, by all means, tell the world how good you are.

No.8 has looked good on Mariota and Gabriel, Herbert and Nix both did great with No.10. During the start of the 20-21 basketball season a transfer, LJ Figueroa wore No.30. I didn't think that looked right. Later he switched to No.12.

"No" to retiring any number. If we retire Mariota's number there are a couple others in the history of the Ducks we should retire. There are only 10 single digit numbers available, 0-9, and they are highly coveted by the players. What are we going to do after we retire half of them???

Ducks sports is just beginning to take off. There will be a lot more worthy "retirees" in the future. Let's just keep it simple.

A big NO.

Every time I see someone wearing #8, it reminds me of Marcus and brings a big smile to my face.

Same with the numbers #21 or #24.

I think of the other great RB's that wore those numbers.

I think it's a greater honor for someone to wear "Marcus' #" than to retire it.

C'mon, we are all laughing at Colorado.

Let's not copy them.

Retiring football numbers doesn't seem realistic with how many players are on a team. But the real answer is there is absolutely no reason for OBD to mimic anything being put forth by the Colorado clown show.

USC has No.55 for a stud linebacker, Micah Parsons was No.11 at Penn State, last season it was Abdul Carter. Honor the player with the number. Kind of a natural, Payton Pritchard- Jackson Shelstad, No.3

Great idea!

Mr. FishDuck

BTW - I’d like to thank CU for really doing their part in helping the historic PAC succeed.

CU hasn’t won a bowl game since 2004, when they took home the Houston Bowl trophy.

Retiring numbers seems appropriate in professional sports where players may play for the same team for 10 to 20 years. Not enough numbers to retire after 3 to 4 years in college.

I'm completely with you here.

Keep the number around. It already has an almost sacred sense to it. Gabriel called Mariota to ask his permission. That's the Mariota legacy.

Mariota would have said yes to whoever called to ask but you could tell he was honored to be asked.

That's what the Oregon program is all about. Honor the player not the number and honor the player by keeping the number alive.
