Chip Kelly is coming back to the Big Ten

Northwestern is hiring Chip Kelly as its new offensive coordinator, ESPN reports. Kelly, whom the Las Vegas Raiders fired as offensive coordinator in November, joins David Braun's staff.

Well, if Willie Taggart can find a job as running back coach in the NFL (Ravens), I am sure there will always be job opportunities for 'Ol Chipper.

Success defined at Northwestern looks a heckuva lot different than success in the NFL, so good luck to him.

I am not at all concerned about how this impacts any head to head matchups with OBD.

I guess he's planning on NIL doing the recruiting for him.

While I appreciate all he did when at Oregon, I wonder if he should be getting all that credit?

How much was Bellotti? Or Helfrich?

Was he a one-hit-wonder or just a flash-in-the-pan?

Chip emphasized three things while he was at Oregon that have become elementary to good college football. The mesh between the QB and the running back that allows the Quarterback to read the defense before either releasing or keeping the ball. The tempo between plays making the “hurry-up” that formerly was used only at the end of the half or end of the game common to the first possession and throughout the game.

Physical conditioning to the extreme, so that Ducks on both sides of the ball could withstand the faster tempo and increased number of plays.

Since the opponents we not trained and ready to defend what OBD presented, both as Bellotti’s OC and as head coach, the Ducks under Chip won lots of games using players who had fewer stars coming out of high school.

The Ducks won lots of games in the 4th quarter simply by wearing out their opponents.

For Northwestern this is a significant upgrade.

Chip had more pros than cons and I'm not talking about players going Pro vs getting arrested while at Oregon. Can't say for sure but it seems to me that the Ducks would not be where we are right now had it not been for Chip. Chip was 1/8" away from a Natty win. Subsequent coaches built off what Chip started. Outside help from Nike and Duck media did the rest.

CFB is an ever changing landscape where the hot thing of today is a thing of the past 3-4 years latter.

I wish him well at NW but won't feel sorry for him when he gets his butt kicked by the Ducks.

Is Chip desperate for money (i.e., he has a SPENDING problem) or does he just enjoy coaching so much that he can’t sit out a year and potentially land a bigger job next year?

From the few interviews in which he’s shared personal details, I would say it’s the latter. He just loves the game.
