Are We Sleeping On An Elite Oregon D?
I haven't figured out the numbers but how much of the pass rush not getting home is down to the speed of the release? Feels like there have been a lot of quick passes opposing offenses have tried to use because they wanted to get the ball away fast. But I know that hasn't always been the case this year as well. Feels like MU is not as effective this year but TT is having a great year.

What's Wrong with Lofting 50/50 Bombs from Near Midfield?
Look at what Ohio State did to Penn State. They threw the ball deep. Bama, Georgia, Miami earlier in the season, A&M, Tennessee- all throw deep early and often. If you want to win a Natty, you're going to have to throw the ball deep. How did we beat Ohio State? Throwing the ball deep. How did we lose to Washington? Throwing efficient pass schemes nearly the entire game. OBD threw one TD pass against Indiana. What kind of pass was it? A bomb. It has been my opinion all year, you have to score 40 a game. Explosive run plays for TDs don't happen often against playoff teams. Explosive plays are necessary to win. That leaves explosive passing. Figure it out, don't make excuses. Throw the damn ball deep.

Iowa Game Starts at 12:30 PT
Very much appreciate not having a 9:00 game. Thank you to the football gods (which of course means the TV execs).

Are We Sleeping On An Elite Oregon D?
The LBs are the key unit in the Mint Defense. The position requires a particular type of athlete. Jackson fits that archetype, but he runs himself out of plays as you adroitly mentioned. BB makes up for his lack of speed with instinct. The players don't fit the scheme, but Lupoi has managed to put the LBs in position to make plays more often this season. The secondary performed fine against Indiana in my opinion. The corners were left in islands and didn't get beat deep- Indiana ran simple out routes, which is their staple when they can't get down field. Ohio State does the same with Smith, who simply throws guys off of him to get open. Not sure you can ask more from the secondary since there really hasn't been an effective pass rush this year. I still like what I see. Not perfect, but not a mess. I do want to see less lethargy on both sides of the ball though. Not sure how close OBD can get to that August performance. Sure would like to see that, or at least what we did to Ohio State in Eugene.

This is the D I wished for when Chip Kelly first came to Oregon...

Are We Sleeping On An Elite Oregon D?
It's a very good defense that will continue to need to develop. I know our linebackers are kinda the weak link but they aren't as weak as I think their reputation is. They are asked to do a TON! Part of me thinks that maybe to set up the linebackers better to more regularly succeed something in the base scheme should change. But I'm not sure what that would look like or if we even have the right players to do that. Getting some redzone stops would be nice. However, a lot of the points scored on us in the redOne have also been either field goals or when we've had the backups on the field late in the game. Most drives don't get close to the redzone.

2025 BIG Info, Predictions, Etc. (11)
Matt Ruhle and Nebraska could not win a game against a ranked opponent, and it looks like QB Dylan Riola has a broken fibula. Behind its backup QB on Saturday, the Cornhuskers' O floundered vs. USC. https://sports.yahoo.com/college-football/breaking-news/article/nebraska-qb-dylan-raiola-reportedly-out-for-the-year-with-broken-fibula-194837844.html

Beavis Can't Sink Any Lower....Right? WRONG.
OSU has sunk very low indeed. Students there today will have to stretch to find things to celebrate, and I appreciate the post and the humor Charles. I'm also with you TexasDuck about not forgetting how things were. I'm one of the greybeards who remembers when we were fortunate to finish over .500 (Chris Miller was the QB my freshmen year in 86/87) and I remember the excitement around that Independence Bowl in '89. We've come a long way and I'm glad it's the Beavs living that reality now and not us. 😁

They beat Lafayette a couple weeks ago. And I know about as much as that school as you do. Soooo... I suppose it counts as a win.

What You Need to Know About the IOWA HAWKEYES
Great stuff! I really hope to see Davison start and pounding it up the gut to be a part of the early game plan. I know that would be a good on good battle but we seem too have to many slow starts trying to work the edges and short passes early. A couple early Stanford esque first downs may open up the outside game. I'm just an arm chair OC I know but I think this will be an alpha dog pissing match early and I think we need to set the tone. Really excited for this one.

Smoo Beats The U!
Don't blame me! My putrid pick in OT was the coaches, and not my fault. Kirby Smart had to be happy to see this guy in his rearview mirror. Gunner Stockton doesn't have the same talent, but he has a heart millions of times bigger than this dork. However, Carson is a great fit with Mari-oh-oh and a Canes team that has never won an ACC title. This whiny BS won't hurt his draft stock, right? 🤪 If you're looking for a leader, don't Becken Carson.

UCLA in 1990 or ‘91? Third string TE Vince Ferry caught the winner. 35K watching max. Goalposts did not have a chance to remain upright.

I remember the goal posts at Autzen coming down, being carried across the bridge and back to campus, a long, L O N G, time ago... Dang, I'm old.

If you are a current freshman at OSU, this might be only time in the upcoming 4 years that you get to storm the field. Might as well have fun when you can.

What's Wrong with Lofting 50/50 Bombs from Near Midfield?
Rockne said when you pass there are three things that can happen, and two of them are bad. Add a third negative to that equation if a receiver is simply out of position to make a tackle, or is just plain bad at tackling.

What You Need to Know About the IOWA HAWKEYES
Iowa's Kinnick Stadium has one of the closest sidelines in college football. There is very little sideline space between the first row of fans and the field. Visting teams need to ignore fans who want to engage with players. Iowa's secondary plays "hit hard and ask questions later" in an effort to intimidate receivers. The philosophy is that referees will not throw flags on every play. Iowa games are often low scoring. It is big britches football...3 yd run, 4 yd run, 3 yd run..first down...3 yd run, 4 yd run...and so on...as the clock runs to limit possessions by the opponent, and keep the D-line fresh for aggressive defensive play calling. They have undoubtedly studied Indiana film until the film wears out. The Iowa O-line will exert their will until an opponent proves otherwise. Oregon is favored by 6-1/2 initially. I suspect that will narrow as kickoff approaches. I wouldn't be surprised if a FG win it, one way or the other. Mendoza threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Sarratt with 1:28 to play in the game to give No. 11 Indiana a 20-15 win over Iowa on Saturday. The closest win of the season for the Hoosiers was one coach Curt Cignetti called a “gut check,” and his players agreed. Indiana was held to 337 yards and its lowest scoring output of the season. But the Hoosiers got two touchdown passes from Mendoza, who threw for 233 yards “It was the good, the bad, and the ugly, and there was a lot of the bad and the ugly,” Indiana's Cignetti said. And that, is the Iowa game plan. Drag your opponent into the mud, play ugly, then look up at the scoreboard at the end.

Beavis Can't Sink Any Lower....Right? WRONG.
I remember as a kid how pathetic Oregon was for so many years. In 1962, with Cas as coach, and Bob Berry as QB for 3 years, we were on a 3 year winning streak, a trip and win at the Sun Bowl over SMU in 1963. Then another very long dry spell before the Indepenent bowl decades later. We were pathetic, and I think any unexpected win brought a lot of over the top excitement to fans. That was a different Oregon than the one from 25 years ago to now. I'll always remember those old days, and appreciate greatly what we have now. An 8-4 season then would have been glorious, now it's a disaster. Though i'm not fond of the Beavers, I'll give their fans a break for celebrating a win, even a minor one.
