The Ducks Have a Problem with Run Defense
As a Duck fan, I was pretty happy to escape the 2024 B1G Championship game with a "W" and no major injuries and at the time mostly looked forward to the playoffs rather than read a bunch of post game discussion. I recall some talk (including here on OBD) that was essentially "exactly how bad is this rush defense?" Penn State indeed ran for 297 yards on the Duck defense at 8.7 ypc. 10 of their 34 rushes went for 10+ yards, including rushes of 41, 32, 26, 24, and 22. That's with Harmon, Caldwell, Burch, Uiagalelei, Tuioti, Boettcher, and Washington in its front. That's against a Penn State offense that wasn't exactly hiding what it wanted to do. On the year, it was going to run one of their two RBs: Allen or Singleton (or run TE Warren); or, throw a pass to one of those 3, a fairly remarkable 64.5% of the time (581 out of their 901 running attempts or completed passes were to Warren, Allen, or Singleton). In the championship game, that hit 74.1%. Despite entering the 4th quarter down 14, PSU didn't exactly abandon the run, keeping a roughly 50/50 split. Does the defensive scheme look like it will approach PSU differently this year? Does the talent so far look much better with the Duck box defenders? PSU had more success moving Oregon's front with double teams last year than any other opponent, will that repeat itself? Does the staff appear less loath to commit more resources to the box if it needs to than in the past? Many questions.

The Ducks Have a Problem with Run Defense
This summarizes my curiosity as well, but with the added element of new-to-each-other players all over the field. It takes time to learn to trust and gel. You start anticipating how the guy next to handles that blocker, that pulling guard, or that QB read and you complement their move with a move of your own (all at game speed). I am slightly concerned, but you have to believe we’ve been running a pretty vanilla scheme knowing there has been no competitive threat so far. Penn St. forums on the other hand are wringing their hands that their offense has yet to get untracked. They’re worried about Drew Allar shouldering high expectations and the slow start to the running game. They long for that one time last year when they ran all over us. Let them think that.

Dark Knight vs Whiteout: Oregon vs Penn State
All great and interesting comments. With a win at the game's end, let them wear whatever. What are the Forum Fanatics attending the game wearing? Camouflage? It's 5000 of OBD vs. 101,000 of them, and I like the odds 😍. Allar's been Allar, and James been small ball James, since I don't know when. Meanwhile, bash the instigators of faux treachery, the cesspool of avarice, the charioteer of reverse hypocrisy, the receptacle of malice, the disseminator of hatred, the fabricator of lies, the artful backbiter notorious for deception, and Pelt the Beavers! Take No Prisoners! Salt the Corvallis Earth! Let the Civil War see no further birth.

I'd love to see them bring these bad boys out for a repeat performance. "Are You Not Entertained?" Part Deux! Thumbs down, the throng of 100,000 making an early exit. Rinse and repeat. White Out = Our Time to Shine Go Ducks!

The Ducks Have a Problem with Run Defense
My real point is I don’t know how valid season stats are 3 games in when all 3 games were blowouts. We built a commanding lead on the road and put in our walk on QB which enabled the opponents offensive starters to get some disproportionate rushing yards and attempts against our 2nd and 3rd string D. If PSU rushes for 200+ against our starters I’ll change my tune. All IMO of course.

I say we match the white out. Go with these jerseys but with white pants and the granite countertop helmets they’re wearing against Beavis (no gold wings, though).

Oregon Ducks - OSU Beavers Pre-Game Reports, Interviews, Etc.
The Oregon Ducks have been one of the hottest teams in the country to begin the season, sprinting out to a 3-0 start. The first two weeks of the season saw the Ducks post massive blowouts, but this last game against the Northwestern Wildcats was their toughest victory yet. The game had an extremely early start time, which seemed to affect Oregon as they showed a bit of sloppiness, leading to their smallest margin of victory this season. But that doesn’t matter to bettors as the team opens as -34.5-point favorites against the Oregon State Beavers according to FanDuel Sportsbook. Duck Hunting for Articles on Dakorien Moore's Injury
If true they will just rest him for this game. And it wont matter. I'm not sure we even need to pass because their run defense is putrid.

Guys, the Whiteout is only the fans wearing white. The players wear their traditional dark navy tops they always wear for home games. We will be in typical away game white outfits.

Oregon Football: 2025’s Best Defender So Far
Defensively, we are solid. Approximately, 10 points allowed per game, even when accounting for late touchdowns when many starters are on the sidelines. Our defensive tackles should improve as the season plays out. Have to remember that they are big bodies, but they are still developing their in game skills working together. The linebackers will definitely benefit as they improve. I think Bryce embodies the term “special player.” How did he get overlooked coming out of high school for baseball, and football? He then worked his a$$ off to develop into a top player for both teams. Have to love a guy who bleeds yellow and green.

The Ducks Have a Problem with Run Defense
Florida International averaged 3.6 yards per carry and, through 3 games, Penn State is holding opposing offenses to 2.85 yards per carry. Neither we nor Penn State has played a team as good we’ll both see on September 27th but I think the concern about Oregon’s run defense is valid. Ideally, Oregon would get out to a huge lead and make Penn State’s offense one dimensional but it seems like the odds of that are pretty low (barring a complete PSU meltdown).

Oregon Football: 2025’s Best Defender So Far
I’ve personally really enjoyed watching the versatility, instincts and skill of Dillon Thieneman. It’s fun watching Thieneman come up to the line of scrimmage and plug holes and make tackles like a linebacker, while also dropping back in coverage and breaking up passes. It’s only a matter of time before he picks off a pass. Matayo Uiagalelei has also been terrific (as has Teitum Tuioti on the other side). I would not want to be a QB on 3rd and long. Matayo is average one sack per game! I don’t know how you could list a linebacker or defensive tackle, given the rushing defense, thus far. However, Mixon appears to be the best of the bunch to me but it might be our weakest unit on defense.

Oregon Football: 2025’s Best Defender So Far
I lost track of where I saw it.. but the three linebackers all have very similar snap counts against Northwestern. Jackson had the most, then Mixon, and then Boettcher. I think Oregon's linebackers are fantastic this year as a group.

Oregon Football: 2025’s Best Defender So Far
Mixon has more of the natural instincts and isn't caught out of position as much as Jackson. Jackson seams to take less than optimal angles leading to arm tackles or being just a step behind a WR sometimes he can makes up for this with speed and sometimes he gets burnt. Jackson had gotten better at this but feels like the guy who never learned a technique because he's just so naturally talented.

Oregon Football: 2025’s Best Defender So Far
Alex, I think your numbers are very compelling...yet Mixon was given B1G Defensive Player of the Week. I think it was our own Mike West who told me that he thought Mixon's instincts in recognizing the play to getting to the gap was superior to Devon Jackson, and certainly it appears that Mixon has superb anticipation in the passing lanes! To me...it is "Good-or-Good." Is Beavis Ready for His Beat-Down?

More Surprises: Oregon Linebacker Jerry Mixon...Big-10 Defensive Player of the Week?
Yep, Lanning and the Oregon D staff sure can't develop players internally. Getting only 4 and 5 star recruits and proven transfers because of those deep pockets and NIL. Mixon was a 3☆ that played special teams early, then rotated in on defense, and now is arguably playing better than the faster and more 'talented ' #26, Jackson at the ILB position. Ditto Boettcher, who walked on for 'a t-shirt and backpack'. Mixon has shown the ability to play heady football, diagnose plays and respond quickly even if his top end speed is not elite. PFF may reward interceptions a bit too much in it's ratings, but it rewards Mixon in all aspects of his performance. He plays his heart out and like BB, brings his lunch pail to work every day.
