Yikes! It Gets WORSE for Bay Area Schools...First Cal, Now Stanford in Crisis
In the even worse category, Stanford's starting quarterback in Week 0, on the road in Honolulu, will be one of the 17 players who transferred in from the transfer portal: 6th-year senior Ben Gulbranson. Ben started three of OSU's last four games in 2024, but left for Stanford knowing that $1.5 million QB Malik Murphy would start this season. A Bing search of Ben finds him still in Corvallis; his transfer to Furd was most certainly not B1G news. Malik is working his way to FCS Portland State after starting a couple of games at Texas when Quinn Ewers was hurt, starting for Duke in 2024 before transferring out, knowing he would lose his job in Durham to a QB transferring in from Tulane, Darian Mensah. For a reported $3 million NIL deal, Mensa(h) was smart to transfer to Duke 😁. Cal had many starters transfer out, especially on offense, due to Wilcox's hiring of former Boise State and Auburn head coach Bryan Harsin as Cal's OC. Heck of a hire when the newbie runs off all of your best players, one reason Wilcox now reports to GM Ron Rivera. Wilcox does not get Cal to a bowl game this season, and if Cal has enough money, Wilcox is likely gone, with the GM also serving as head coach? Perhaps the Bears can use some of that B1G money purloined from the Bruins to buy out the coach? Stanford lost many starters to GM Andrew Luck's firing of Troy Taylor, who is suing Stanford for wrongful termination of his contract. 17 players transferring to Stanford is a record by a good bit. Luck may have conditioned his hire on the administration being willing to admit more transfers out of the portal. Stanford opened -2.5 at Hawaii, not bet down to -1.5. This speaks for itself as to the nadir of Stanford football. Thank goodness OBD caught the last B1G plane out.

Jurrion Dickey Suspension?
I've read those comments too on another site. A lot of complaints that Oregon's five star recruits have failed to become major NFL stats. But again our list of five stars is quite short. But college ball isn't the NFL and though the five star status denotes potential NFL draft success it is important to note that college ball is not the NFL. I think DAT failed to have much of an NFL impact due to his size. However, at Oregon and in college football he was monster in part because of his size and his incredible speed. The NFL has pretty much optimized football for their roster sizes and limitations. Players who don't fit the mold physically need to find a way to fit the mold if they are going to have a successful career. Some can... Some can't.

I think it's safe to say that the majority of Dan Lanning's recruits work out. I'm sure this has a lot to do with the transfer portal and getting guys that fit his system. However, most of his highly rated recruits seem to stick around unlike Mario's guys. I looked at the 2021 class and the only guys who stayed and contributed out of that class were JPJ, TFerg, Bassa and Franklin.

Yikes! It Gets WORSE for Bay Area Schools...First Cal, Now Stanford in Crisis
Con-zano and his followers who say Oregon betrayed Oregon State and will regret their move to the B1G need to read this. Oregon supports their athletic department , yes there's one very huge supporter. But it's not like the fans and alumni give nothing. I used to watch PAC TEN football after dark when I'd be out past midnight. There were many great games, but you could tell the difference in environment. These games started at 8 pm Pacific Time You could start games at 8 pm Eastern Time, or Central Time for programs in the SEC or B1G and the crowds would be there as if it were a five PM kickoff. There's just different levels to these programs and you see it week in and week out. I've talked to fans from Utah, Arizona State, and Arizona a lot during football season and they would often tell me that there were many apathetic game day atmospheres in the PAC. The two they said were the toughest to get tickets to? Oregon and Washington. I have walked up several times and been able to get really cheap Sun Devil tickets on game day. The times I couldn't? You guessed it, Oregon, Washington and Utah. Arizona too, but that's pretty obvious.

Whoa! New Information About Bear Alexander!
Bear always had the raw talent. And as noted, this is his last shot as a to be a premium NFL prospect.. The information that he is really grinding at practice bodes very well for Bear's future. His biggest problem at both Georgia and USC was his level of emotional maturity. From the early practice reports, it does sound like Bear is starting to grow up. And that is very good for the Ducks.

Lanning offers update on Dickey. "We've got two team rules: be respectful and be on time. There are some pieces of that where I felt like he needed a break from us, and we needed a break from him, so we can focus on what's in front of us right now. Wishing him nothing but the best as far as success, and I want to see him get back to where he could be a contributor." Dan Lanning offers update on Oregon Ducks' WR Jurrion Dickey's status

Jurrion Dickey Suspension?
I've read in a couple places the last couple days something to the effect of "another Oregon 5 star bust"; and, wondering where exactly this is coming from? I think Oregon has done pretty well with 5 stars? Leaving out Dickey, in the "recruiting ratings era", I count 13 "consensus" 5 stars. As referenced above, a little over 50% get drafted? I'm seeing 62% at Oregon (with perhaps one * of course). Out of the 13, I'd say 7 were very good or better players who were drafted. Haloti Ngata Johnathan Stewart Arik Armstead Josh Conerly Jr. Kayvon Thibodeaux DAT Noah Sewell Number 8 is the * Lache Seastrunk I'd say most say "bust" and I get it; but, he of course was in the middle of the Lyles thing while at Oregon (which kind of ended it before it started). After transferring to Baylor, in two seasons went 289 carries for 2,189 yards and 18 TDs at 7.6 yards per carry. Left a season early and was drafted in the 6th round by Washington. The next 3 likely go down as "busts" given their ranking. Cameron Colvin: injuries of course, though seemed to finally be on track his last year at Oregon before the ankle injury at WSU, but I get it Thomas Tyner: I've always thought had some very solid contributions at Oregon prior to the shoulder injury but for a 5 star I get it Dontae Manning: became a solid contributor at Oregon but I'd imagine most would say closer to "bust" for a 5 star never breaking through. Manning actually played in 52 games at Oregon with 1,161 snaps. Draft Buzz reported a 65.5 QB rating when targeted as a junior and 64.9 as a senior, which actually is pretty good. Tore off a 4.26 forty at his Pro Day with a 39.5 in vertical and 10.06 broad jump and signed a UFA contract with Atlanta Not much to add for the final 2. Canton Kaumatule Justin Flowe 13 guys, 8 NFL draft picks, one solid contributor and UFA, two pulled down at least in part to injuries, and only 2 clear "busts"? Seems solid.

Yikes! It Gets WORSE for Bay Area Schools...First Cal, Now Stanford in Crisis
I’m not sure about Cal, but I can see Stanford going down an Ivy League road in terms of football. Stanford has a relatively small enrollment and alumni base. Their stadium renovation was very good, and I find it to be an excellent venue to watch a game. However, it’s rare that they get a strong crowd. The renovation at Cal’s Memorial Stadium was also excellent, and it too is a great place to watch football. Large crowds are also rare at Cal. I’ve lost count of how many Duck games I watched in those stadiums through the years. Great memories. However, the Bay Area is NFL oriented, with a limited enthusiasm for college football. I’m not sure that either program remains relevant in the current milieu of college football.

If Dan Lanning and the Duck culture are unable to help this young man elevate to his potential, a lot of the responsibility is on him. "And it's wake up time Time to open your eyes And rise and shine" Tom Petty

As far as 5-star recruits go, Jurrion is really the only bust that Dan Lanning has recruited. Connerly was a first rounder. Bo was a first rounder who was developed by Oregon’s staff. Matayo will go in the first round or two. Stewart was a solid contributor and was poised to break out this season. The jury is still out on Dante Moore, Rushing, Breland, and this current group of Freshmen. It’s looking good so far minus the injuries.

Here are the stats for 2024. In short massive drop off after 5 star. So recruiting rankings are still a good rating of potential.

I think I read it’s more players but a smaller percentage. This makes sense since there are only about 30 5-stars per class but hundreds of 4-stars.

Shame it didn't work out. But from a culture perspective no team can afford to have a player engage in fighting with other players. I wish him luck wherever he ends up next.

Statistically speaking, only a little over 50% of 5-star recruits are drafted into the NFL. Those stars only indicate how good they stacked up against their peers as 17-18 year olds.
