2024 Battle For The B1G Looks Like a Battle of the Os

Transfer Portal Winners and Losers:
30 day window for Bama, UW, AZ, and SJS. AZ players are leaving like Tucson is on fire. Lots of good Bama players out the door. And the last UW 2023 starter out the door please turn out the lights. The powers that be have to get portal dates figured out. In 2024 the portal opens before the first playoff games on 12/21/24 and the playoff does not conclude until 1/20/25, 5 days before the traditional date when underclassmen have to declare for the draft. And in the middle of 'all this' the first signing day appears. Managing an NFL schedule today compared to a CFB schedule is a piece of cake.

2024 Battle For The B1G Looks Like a Battle of the Os
As the wags in the midwest are calling it, the B1G conference handed Ohio State an OPPS, Ohio State Playoff Protected Schedule. Of the on-paper contenders, Ohio State has the least rocky row to hoe in conference and its OOC schedule in 2024 looks like Michigan and UCLA the last 2 seasons. This year, Michigan plays SEC Texas OOC, in Ann Arbor. UCLA plays at LSU during the Ducks 1st Off Week and the week before Oregon opens the B1G schedule with a trip to LA to play the Bruins. This should help the Ducks' cause. UW's toughest OOC opponent, like Oregon's, comes against a Pac-2 opponent. Wazzu at Lumen Field in Seattle. USC not only plays LSU in Las Vegas OOC but also plays Notre Dame in LA in the final regular season game. With the expansion to a 12-team playoff, until the playoff committee shows that strength of schedule matters instead of just Ws and Ls, I see no reason to step up the OOC schedule. Heroes often win their medals posthumously. Thanks to all of my editors for the great work! I need all the help I can get.

Oregon Lands top-5 Slot in Joel Klatt's Early Top 10 for 2024 Season
Klatt: 1. Georgia - Number 1. in every poll I have seen to date. But neutral site vs. Clemson and Florida. Road games vs, Kentucky, Texas, Bama, and Ole Miss. And home vs. Auburn, TENN., and an improving Georgia Tech. WOW! A lot of guys are back but lots of guys are headed to the NFL including TE Brock Bowers. 2. Ohio State - Most of the talent is back. Michigan in Columbus. Road games vs Oregon and Penn State look to be the only away-from-Columbus tests. Wags are calling this the OSPPS - The Ohio State Playoff Protection Schedule. 3. Oregon - Thanks Joel. Makes some sense to be behind the Buckeyes because the Ducks 2024 schedule is far more difficult than tOSU. 4. Texas - Skip Bama but play UGA in Austin. Play the 14th easiest SOS of the 16 SEC teams. 5. Alabama - I don't know about this. It's still an 8 game conference schedule in the SEC but Bama trips to Wisconsin and with OK/TX in town it is going to be harder for SEC teams to finish with lofty records. 6. Ole Miss - Can Kiff get over the 2-SEC-loss hump? No Bama and UGA visits Oxford. 7. Michigan - So many questions. Texas, USC, Oregon, UW, and Ohio State are on the schedule. Good luck. 8. Utah - Makes more sense now that Fisch is gone. AZ does trip to SLC. But has Whit lost his mo-jo? I'd have K St. here. 9. Notre Dame - Schedule lightens up from 2023. Interesting opener at A+M. Does Marcus Freeman have the chops? 10. Penn State - No Michigan. Ohio State at home. Same question as Kiff. Can PSU get over the 2 loss hump? I would have seriously considered: Clemson; Mizzou; LSU; K St; OK St; and excuse me, USC. Oregon finishes 3rd, NICE! But 3rd behind tOSU means an extra playoff game; the 17th game for the Ducks, assuming OR played OH ST in the B1G champ game, would be played in Atlanta on 1/20/25 for the champ game.

Kalen DeBoer, Alabama Suffer Several Major Setbacks on Wednesday
The more that is discussed regarding his hire I do not see DeBoer being able to carry on at Bama anywhere close to the record that Saint Nick posted. He did an amazing job at the NAIA level. A very good job at Fresno State. And taking UW to the 2024 champ game speaks for itself. Or, does it? The 2024 UW roster was not valued as a Blue Chip Roster (BCR) coming into 2024 which, in my opinion, shows a flaw in the BCR calculations. Penix for BCR purposes continued to be ranked as a 3* recruit after his reuniting with DeBoer in 2022 and throwing for 4500+ yards. Ditto the 3 amazing wide receivers whose initial recruiting rankings did not reflect their performance since arriving at UW. This is also a failure IMO when it comes to the 2024 composite roster rankings. Transfers are re-ranked when they enter the portal but 3* recruits who play above their ranking do not have their initial ranking adjusted. Make no mistake, a BCR matters. No team won a BCS title or a 4-team playoff title without a BCR. Michigan in 2023 had a 54% BCR. My point is this: DeBoer was not working with a true 'developmental' roster at UW in 2023. He is a heck of a coach but he stepped into a situation in Seattle where there was a lot of experience and talent on the roster and he had the good fortune of having a prior relationship with Penix at Indiana. And coaching matters of course, but winning 10 games in a row by less than 10 points, the first time a CFB team had done so since Princeton in the 19th century, takes a fair measure of CFB pixie dust. In fairness, he only had two years to do so at the P4 level but DeBoer has never signed a recruit ranked in the top 200. Bama before Nick arrived had many down seasons. I have a feeling that Post Nick and with Oklahoma and Texas coming in a down season at Bama, 3 losses, could become the norm.

FS2? May be involved but no games as of now are scheduled. I should have mentioned above. Fox is the majority shareholder of the BTN. A better 'fit' than the Pac-12 network that was on its own.

2024 It's Going to be B1G - Including B1G Broadcasts
The following are the B1G broadcast partners beginning in 2024 through 2030. Fox, FS1 (Fox Sports 1,) CBS, NBC, NBC streaming service, Peacock, and the Big10 Network (BTN.) Pacific Broadcast times for a B1G 'usual broadcast' on Saturday will be: Fox B1G Noon Game - 9 AM Pacific - Pregame coverage begins on Fox at 7 AM. CBS - 12:30 NBC - 4:30 And I expect that a late game, 7:30 Pacific will be the norm with the broadcasts sorted out between the above-identified broadcast entities. Fox networks will show at least 9 Friday Night games. For an undisclosed reason, Michigan and Penn State do not host Friday Night games. Peacock will stream 9 games. Labor Day weekend will feature a B1G broadcast on Thursday, Friday, and Sunday nights, in addition to a full slate of Saturday games. I recommend that OBD forum members sign up on BTN. Fantastic coverage of the B1G Conference with in-depth coverage of the Pac-4, before the official sign-on date. Get your popcorn and favorite IPAs ready!

Update: Jan. 22 News on Lock-Down Corner Transfer Jabbar Muhammad
I believe after transferring from OK St to UW he has 1 season of eligibility remaining. Gonzales anyone?

So If Harbaugh Leaves…
He Gone! I think that Michigan gives OC Sherron Moore who was undefeated as a pinch hitter coach the gig. How many Michigan assistant coaches have defeated That Team Down South?

So How Good Was Jedd Fisch at Recruiting?
Great post. Buy none of these guys were in the top 170 recruits regardless of position. My bad for not expressing the message correctly and good on you for a terrific deep dive.

So How Good Was Jedd Fisch at Recruiting?
Yet again, with a 9 game conference schedule, the Pac-12 beat itself up. Many of the teams the Ducks defeated were ranked and finished unranked. What conference was better? The Pac-12 won the bowl series. A team from the Pac-12 played a B1G team for the title. USC defeated the team that finished second in the ACC with a backup QB. UCLA defeated the Mountain West champion. Oregon blew out a 13-0 team that led the nation in rush yards. Weak? I don't see it. If the Pac-12 was weak, what conference in 2023 was not weak? And while not really on point the Michigan vs. UW game drew the most viewers in the last 5 seasons. I humbly disagree with you, my friend. IMO the Pac-12 in 2023 was the leader of the P5 pack.

It's Official...HC Jed Fisch to Washington
A $240M 'budget miscalculation?' Oops! Jedd Fisch's departure presents big challenges for an Arizona team in transition THEATHLETIC.COM College football has become a rotating door. When a popular coach like Jedd Fisch leaves a program, players usually follow.

A B1G Look at Michigan in 2024.
OBD members, focus on point No. 7. I believe a consensus is growing for OREGON and Ohio State to be considered as the two top contenders for a B1G title in 2024. How different will Michigan look in 2024? 10 thoughts after the championship celebration THEATHLETIC.COM J.J. McCarthy declared for the NFL, joining Blake Corum and numerous key players from Michigan's title team. Is Jim Harbaugh next?
-
So How Good Was Jedd Fisch at Recruiting?
OK, but the man was recruiting to a basketball school with ZERO football accolades. The flip side of this analysis is that he took a group of lesser-recruited players, to No. 11 in the country, and defeated Oklahoma, a team with a much deeper roster in the Alamo Bowl. AZ lost in OT at Miss St. with de Laura turning it over 4 times. Lost in OT at SC. Gave UW all that it could handle, and fairly easily dispatched Oregon State. This team had a legit shot at finishing 11-2. I reiterate I am very happy Oregon played in Tempe this season and not in Tucson. Recruiting remains a critical element in CFB but the composite ranking, including transfers, is also critical. UW's roster last season from a recruiting point of view was far better than the recruiting rankings with Penix, among others, coming to UW as a 3*. The Joe Moore Award-winning OL did not have a starter ranked above No. 170 coming out of high school. As to the QB injury, where would the 49ers be today if injuries had not moved Brock Purdy up the starting position? The great Nick Saban could not figure out his permanent starter at QB before game No. 3. When was the last time that UW out-recruited Oregon? UW today is a development program and not a Blue Chip Roster program. Fisch did a heck of a job coaching up development players at Arizona and when the portal dust settles I think he will have a better roster at UW than he did in Tucson. I'll take Dan Lanning all day long over Fisch but I don't think the guy at UW will be a pushover by any means.

‘If You’re Scared Your Coach is Leaving…’
Thanks, Don. Did he receive an official 'offer?' I doubt it. Did Alabama reach out to his agent, Heck Yes! Part of the game is not to make an official offer if there is no interest. The Bama AD, Greg Byrne, is scrambling today to make sure everyone knows that DeBoer was his first choice. Right?

A Few B1G Buckeye Thoughts
No. 3 in Total D last season with most of the key players returning.

It's Official...HC Jed Fisch to Washington
Come ON, Rob! This is what all coaches preach and 17 and 18-year-olds buy into. At a basketball school, a school with no CFB modern-day football laurels, Fisch took a 0-12 team to NO. 11 in the country in 3 seasons. Remarkable. I think many AZ guys will follow him to UW if invited and that his message will resonate in Seattle. He's in the B1G Leagues so any other job that comes up will have to be a Power 2 job. As to the team meeting, that's not the same as him speaking with the guys he wants to bring with him. Unless it's an Irish Wake, why prolong a wake? I believe that Fisch and UW will continue to be worthy adversaries.
