  1. Not disagreeing with any of the above takes. But have younger forum members ever heard of Sam Gilbert? Sam was John Wooden's bag man. This 'stuff' has been going on for a long time.
  2. Just don't drop your Taylor Made MP 4s. My solution to the off season, play a lot of mediocre golf. Post-round, everything compared to my golf swing looks and feels better. And I can kill 4 hours while playing a 'sport' where my game improves after 3 or 4 on course IPAs. Is this a great country, or what?
  3. Grant Hill's dad was a great RB at Yale and a very good RB for the Cowboys.
  4. If you can't have a good time in Athens on game day something is wrong with you, very wrong. 'Tween the Hedges is a great place to watch a game. Just don't let mascot UGA literally take a bite out of you as he once did to an Auburn player after the guy had scored a TD!
  5. Will be fascinating when the G5 and especially the P5, take over CFB rules and regulations from the NCAA. Will there be an attempt to rein in CFB 'free agency' and NIL? Will any such attempt be sustainable in a court of law? Will there be uniform rules and regs in the G5/P5; or, will it vary by conference? A big issue for me, will there be caps on the # of CFB players a team can have on scholarship? Will the Power 2 have rules and regs the other conferences cannot afford? Such as the number of assistant coaches and not just 'advisors' that you can have on your staff? Will the B1G and the SEC be in lockstep? Or, will the B1G based on 'academic integrity' go a different way? Of course today, in theory, you can have 85 players on scholarship and X number of walk-ons whose tuition, etc., is more than covered by NIL deals. Saban has already hinted that he is taking a look at 'this.' Without a Players Union with which to negotiate, can anything on the transfer and NIL front be regulated? And if there is such a union, who or what will constitute 'management?' Instead of driving myself nuts with all of the hypos, I'm going to watch and enjoy while I can.
  6. AMEN! Roster management in the NBA and NFL today is a piece of cake compared to CBB and CFB. 'Get your scorecard! Can't tell the players without a scorecard!'
  7. The 49ers O, or the Kansas City O? Regardless, this certainly sounds good. All we are saying, is give Ty a chance. Did Ty ever have a real shot last season of playing in the Mari (no O) prevent O? [Kudos to forum members who came up with both of these references.] Glad to hear that he and Nix are sympatico. If nothing else, if Ty is the starter vs UGA it will help to have an SEC-experienced guy on the sidelines lending Ty support. We won't get any info from the Oregon coaches and trainers, but one wonders if Nix' ankle has totally healed? If Ty is The Man, Ty in theory has 3 years of eligibility while Nix has 2. But if he is 'all-that' I expect Ty will depart early for the pros? I hope Ty gets the starting job. If he doesn't, there will be plenty of programs trying to get him into and poach him out of the portal.
  8. And especially coming off of an ankle injury he was not ready to go pro. Another Auburn QB just entered the portal. Harsin will be lucky to make it past year 2 at Auburn. I think you are spot on with the Dillingham reference Hayward. I also think that he may have seen enough SEC Ds including of course, the UGA D; 0-3 vs Georgia.
  9. Remember the Alamo? I don't want to do so. Snap the ball from under center and have the QB take a knee and the Ducks likely do not allow TCU enough time to come back. Helfrich's: We don't practice this was beyond lame.
  10. Where's the karma for two decades of academic fraud at UNC getting a pass? Dissing Brooks and Altman? No excuse. But I am loathe to blame the following loss on K's churlish behavior. If the other coach is a jerk at the end of a game and it affects the Ducks play in the next game, that's on the Ducks. Get the animus against K, but he is the 'modern' (post Wooden) CFB GOAT.
  11. All righty then, Monday night tune in for the Roy Williams Bowl? Coach Self followed Williams at Kansas and Coach Davis did so at UNC. Hadn't thought of this before but Williams leaving KU for UNC was kind of like Riley leaving OK for SC, other than for UNC being Williams alma mater.
  12. Other than dinero for Caleb, I don't know?
  13. I hope you are right but A+M is building one heck of a roster. A roster that is closing the gap with Bama and surpassing Auburn and LSU. A+M plays UGA once in a blue moon. It's permanent E division cross over opponent is Mizzou. Playing Mizzou every season is far different than playing UGA. And it won't be long before OK and UT officially join the SEC. Once this happens, divisions probably go and pods arrive. The most geographically likely pod for A+M is: A+M, Arkansas, OK and UT. There will be a number of seasons where A+M will miss Bama or LSU, or both. Tennessee improved greatly in Heupel's 1st season as HC, despite many guys departing due to the NCAA investigation and other reasons. Will TN even be punished for the pay-for-play program it was running before NIL? I can see ASU getting blasted for its 'COVID-recruiting' and TN taking a walk. Compare what the sanctions were for the Ole Miss pay-for-play with what SC got for 1 guy receiving 3rd party benefits. Some team has to come in 2nd in the SEC E and it certainly could be TN. 1 very difficult thing for the Vols is having to play Bama and UGA every season. I don't think we will see 'Ole blocking' because skill guys are making more money than the other guys? If TN or any school is successful it only raises the NIL market value of every player. NIL in CFB will be the same as salaries in the NFL. Certain positions will be paid more money. BUT, I sure hope you are right!
  14. Great and spot on take. I hope Oregon is not going to blindly throw in its future media rights to the conference. Find out the floor and ceiling and BTW, find out if there is a cogent plan to salvage Larry's Loser Network. I'd love to know where Schill came down on the decision not to expand?
  15. I do see a Duke win and cover. I see a Jayhawks win but no cover.
  16. It's too bad the Stanford women went down against UConn. However, the Stanford players get to return to Palo Alto and not Storrs, CT. It's the first game up but in the 'undercard' today I like Kansas to to defeat Nova in a close game. Tickets for the semifinals with Coach K coaching his last game vs UNC are through the dome. A 2 vs an 8 seed and it looks like Coach K has destiny on his side? I'm going with Duke. This tournament has been a heck of a rebound for 'Tobacco Road' after an underwhelming regular season. BTW, Coach K is looking darn good for a 75 year old guy. And I should definitely know. K was the born on February 13, 1947, a week to the day after I arrived. What a difference a week makes? I'm exhausted after riding 18 holes in a golf cart. I'm not surprised at this kind of grit from a guy of my generation, who played his college ball at West Point under Bobby Knight.
  17. Fun response Annie. Texas tried to 'buy' Saban a few years back. Nick had no interest in going to UT but did get a nice pay raise from Bama as a result of the UT offer. (Nick reportedly advised Sark not to take the UT job. Rat poison in Austin?) Not only is Saban paid $10M+ a year when you include incentives, he owns a number of small businesses in Alabama, including his successful car dealerships. Tuscaloosa is not an especially pretty town but it is close to Saban's beautiful lake front home. And he is 71, I doubt he has any desire to build up another program? These crazy NIL #s are going to get even more idiotic; especially, in the SEC. I'm certain NIL is being used and used often in the B1G, but you don't hear about the kind of money being tossed at recruits in the B1G like in the SEC. How many schools in the Pac-12 have the desire and the money to compete against 'THIS?' Utah did give Ohio State a heck of a run in the Rose Bowl. But that was with 6 Buckeyes starters opting out. Interesting take up on Yardbarker today. Back when Spurrier was at Florida, a RB recruit who went on to play in the NFL was paid $50K to attend Georgia. He took the UGA money but played ball in Gainesville. But it was UW that was slammed by the NCAA and not UF.
  18. Seen this, not good. If the B12 and Pac-12 are not exploring a merger and the value of combined media rights, plus turning the P5 into a P4 something is simply wrong. How as currently constituted is the Pac-12 Network supposed to become relevant and solvent?
  19. ??? LSU finally fired the coach who was on FBI tape talking about pay for play. The portal is big in CFB but is and will be even bigger in CBB. Show me the money. Saint Pete's had a nice run but the CBB tourney final 4 is 3 blue bloods and Villanova, close to a blue blood. Rosters matter in CBB and more so in CFB.
  20. I do think you can buy a championship CBB team. Far fewer guys required. Let's see how A+M does this season at Bama? Under Jimbo, A+M has lost 4 games every season and nearly lost at CU last season. A+M did defeat Bama in College Station last season. Since then the QB who defeated Bama has transferred to Auburn. How many 4 and 5 star recruits that A+M bought in will pan out ? Jimbo was a 'star' at FSU when Jameis showed up. He left FSU in shambles. Last seen by Oregon, the Ducks and Marcus pasted A+M.
  21. Good point above regarding the QB position and the portal. I definitely expect to see the competition to continue into fall.
  22. AMEN! The hyperbole is off the charts and it is exciting. But will it translate to the field of play?
  23. Great take. Even if a school's administration does not want to opt out, say Oregon State, what are the chances of the Beavers ever being able to compete for a CFB title. Today, I see Oregon and SC having the desire and the $ to compete for a playoff title, and with the possible exception of Utah, that's it for the Pac-12 as currently constituted. Follow the $. Follow the roster rankings. Look at the lack of subscribers and the lack of distribution agreements for Larry's Network. UCLA's athletic department is $60M in the red. It's HC hates recruiting and the football team plays in a deteriorating stadium miles from campus. UW? I'm not saying DeBoer was a bad hire, but he certainly does not have the potential of Dan Lanning; or, to date, the bona fides of Lincoln Riley. But DeBoer did come with a 'low ball' purchase price. Was a guy like James Franklin ever on UW's radar? I'm going to watch and enjoy Ducks football. But somehow Oregon has to find a more lucrative place to play ball. I was never impressed by The Alliance scheduling agreement, and with the B1G staying at 9 games the agreement appears to be over before it gets started? Does Oregon State at Georgia Tech move the financial needle? The Ducks and SC IMO, have not thrown in the towel. But on the whole, the conference with the decision not to expand market size has thrown in the towel.
  24. The above 'sounds good' but it isn't happening and the NCAA post-Alston and turning CFB control over to the P5/G5 is not going to enforce this format.
  25. Great take. I very much doubt that the CFB Playoff will move to a 12 team field after 2025 without agreeing to pay the players involved in the playoff. As you note, even under a contract, a player who do not want to risk NFL $ will not have to play in these games. Of course in such a case they will not be compensated. With a 12 team playoff field, how many bowl sponsors will be willing to pay players, at least certain star players, to play in a 'lesser' bowl game? How much will you have to pay a star player to compete in an exhibition game and put his NFL career at risk? What kind of ROI can you expect from such a payment? It's not the same as a committee buying a HS player's NIL rights so he will attend the 'committee's school.' I expect we will see playoff expansion and the disappearance of many of the smaller bowls. Especially, if/when we arrive at the day of direct pay-for-play and a Super League. I apologize for the 'duplicate' reply.
