Can Ty Thompson Raise His Game and Lead Ducks in '24?
Haywarduck replied to QuackAttack's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
In Stein I trust. He seems to be bringing Ty along nicely, but he also will know who, and who not to bring in. I hope Ty can keep bringing it along, but with the coaches, we are in good hands. -
Best advice, bring bagpipes to any family gathering. If anyone brings up a controversial topic, begins to pour that one too many, or just about anything you don't want, threaten to play the bagpipe.

Will the Oregon Ducks Face Michigan in the Rose Bowl?
Haywarduck replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I like when you say it is a 50-50 call. I look at games as how many times out of 10 would we beat a team, all things equal. Against ASU it would be 10-0 anywhere, anytime. Some of the other teams not so easy. What really counts is I see the beav game as 9-1 at Autzen. There is little chance the beavs come away with a win against this team at Autzen. This team needs to make sure that one chance doesn't happen. Just keep focusing on the game ahead of them, and the championship game, game against Michigan and all the rest will line up nicely. -
Lanning’s Culture Is Paying Dividends in November
Haywarduck replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Great article, but I think we need perspective on these accomplishments. Number one Lanning was an assistant before becoming a head coach with a bunch of ideas he had never done before as the leader. So many coaches move up the ranks as a head coach, and face a head wind they can't deal with when they get to D1, or top level football. Their weakness comes out and it all falls apart. Lanning started at the top as a head coach, and is flourishing. Second he has put together a group of players who fill the needs at every position and fostered a winning mentality in year two. Most programs don't have the players, or lack the depth years down the road, and culture takes many seasons to develop. Lastly he has the coaches who are all aligned, and nobody has reached their level of incompetence. Tosh struggled a bit last year, and Lanning just brought in reinforcements with full support of his coaching abilities. He also brought in a green OC and again just brought in players and turned him loose. There is so much Lanning is doing beyond what I point out, but it is truly remarkable the simplistic things I pointed out are working. There have been a number of great articles on what is going right, but how quickly is quite frankly, astonishing! -
USC Makes Offer to Utah Defensive Coordinator
Haywarduck replied to Pennsylvania Duck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Whittingham is 63 Scally is 44, much smarter to take over the program at Utah when Kyle leaves. I will say this about the sc program. -
They certainly ended up under the dawgs. I have a feeling they will stay under the Ducks as well. We will fowl it all up for the hopeful little rodents! Some more of this!

We live in a capitalistic society, I have no problem with that, and enjoy the fruits of the system. I was just pointing out how that system can backfire, and those situations are unfortunate. Agree with Log H the timber industry is one of the great successes of the west. One can criticize my connection to Yosemite, but that is how I look at what the Pac-12 was, an amazing conference, and a group of spoiled, shortsighted morons ruined. I see some of that same group coming to my community and having the same type of impact. We also live in a system ruled by a judicial process, that is a whole different topic. I also have no problem with that, actually grateful for it, and if the beavs and cougs win when the laws are ruled on then so be it. I think the problem is when we don't fully understand the process, and don't accept the outcomes. I can accept the outcomes, I just don't have to respect those who make the decisions, but the process is complex, messy and open to criticism.

We go after somebody who defines clutch, and sadly Tyler doesn't. If there is one trait I want to see it is someone who thrives in adversity. This is something Oregon has always had, and needs going forward.

I am not a socialist, but when you make more you pay more, in order to be part of a civilized society. When you have selfish members of society shirking their responsibilities the civilized part of the society goes away. The problem with what the LA schools did was they tried to escape something they felt was unfair, while destroying something that was beautiful. Much like those who wanted to develop Yosemite, or cut all the sequoias. At some point you have to do what is right for the greater good, or your left with stumps. I get how the beavs have been a bungling brother, who are now getting to learn their true value. They don't deserve what they have been getting, but they were part of something that benefited all. They are just collateral damage of the spoiled, selfish society we live in, led by those to our south. As Charles stated, I wasn't, and am not thrilled with the move to the BIG. I am also not happy with the destruction of the Conference of Champions. Great article and some prescient points, but I am looking back I just want what we had. Maybe that is naive, but sometimes you have to give a little, instead of just taking. As usual I am taking just a little different perspective on a tough subject.

How this will go down isn't by committee, nor before the Pac-12 championship game. The pundits from each region vote, previous winners, and one fan vote, a little less than 900 votes. The next two games will decide if Bo wins or loses it. LSU has one game to impress the voters. Bo will have two games, one against a leading contender which will probably have the largest impact. If he wins against the dawgs, and Jayden doesn't get to put up any numbers that should have a positive impact for Bo as the voters turn in their ballots. Basically it is all in Bo's hands, and the hands of his receivers. I do think Bo has earned a trip to New York, when he stands up is the only question for now.

Like I mentioned, I still feel that angst, when we get to a 3rd, and 11yds. before getting our initial first down. At the same time this team seems to have that ability not to panic and just execute. I would say the difference is this team is getting better too. We haven't had anyone big go down, and each unit seems to be improving. This is something few teams can say, especially the team that is set to go the conference championship already. I was struck by how much the dawgs were relying on pass interference. That almost seemed to be their go to reaction when a pass was thrown. To answer your question, yes I am feeling it, but those other feelings aren't too far from the surface.

Love what he said about seeing what we want, need to be. I think the Ducks saw that last year against Georgia. Now we have to wait and see how close we are to that goal. Dilly needs to get the guys, but he is a coach who can lead.

Ducks Must Beat Beavs for Pac Championship Game Participation
Haywarduck replied to HDuck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
The whole conference championship formula doesn't matter. The goal is to get to the playoffs, and win it all, so we lose to the beavs, and the season blows up. This game is huge, I mean gargantuan, I can't emphasize enough this game is immense, prodigious! Each game going forward is just gets bigger too! Each game is a test, and since the dawg game the Ducks haven't disappointed. I also like they played Bo into the second half. This team isn't playing afraid of anything, just executing a plan, and so far it is working. Let's go and cook some tail! -
Pretty Impressed: ASU GamePlan so Crafty...
Haywarduck replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
When it was 3rd down and 11 yds to go to start the game was anyone else just a wee bit worried, concerned? The great thing is I am pretty sure no one on the field was worried. The Ducks just executed their masterful gameplan, and put the hurt on the devils. -
First off I don't think Taggart was the greatest recruiter, he was a salesman, plain and simple. Much like MariØ, salesman, not a coach. Like John Candy in the clip below, he could sell anything to anyone. He had gold, the Oregon Football Program, and he sold it when he was at Oregon. It wasn't like he had shower curtain rings to sell. Lanning is a great recruiter and he has a great product. Previously we had poor recruiters, salesman who were just mainly coaches. In this day and age you need to be a salesman. It is said Saban is a great salesman, and a great coach. You have to be very good at both. I really started this post because I wanted to give everyone a good laugh on Friday evening, and tie it into something football. There is nothing better than John Candy to do that.

Is Will Stein Better Than OCs Chip, Helfrich & Frost?
Haywarduck replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Can he become the best, yes. Does he become the best, I look forward to seeing. As LH stated, you have to beat the rivals, he is 0-1. You have to develop qb's, still seeing that happen. Agree the numbers for offensive output are impressive, but the real impressive numbers come with W's. Right now I am extremely impressed with Stein, but that is like being impressed with Karl Malone for being the third best scorer in NBA history. Few remember Karl because he never won anything. Full disclosure, I watched Karl Malone many times and he was amazing, dominant, but......... -
QUAAACK! Kicker Tyler Kinsman is a Duck
Haywarduck replied to Pennsylvania Duck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Preferred walk-on is a pretty good gig for a punter. Prove yourself, get a scholarship or transfer. Agree the kicker, punter long snapper are important positions, but you don't want to waste a scholarship on a head case. I think this is where you spend a little on NIL money and the transfer portal. Buy a known entity, see if you can get lucky with a preferred walk-on low risk. I think that is what we did with the WSU kicker, but he is hurt. -
Will Stein: How Much Longer in Eugene?
Haywarduck replied to DrJacksPlaidPants's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Whenever something happens Lanning says good! Doesn't matter if it is good or bad. He will look at it as an opportunity to grow. I am not worried, just enjoying the ride. Now if he takes a job before the season ends and gets distracted, I won't be too happy. That is where the whole losing a good coach sucks. Dan Lanning is about the only coach who left a program the right way. I there anything Lanning doesn't do well? -
About 10% are from our kicker, although I don't have an exact stat. I will say there is no reason to give away field position, and that needs to stop as we head into tougher games. My problem is the pressure, and impact of these mistakes will only get greater. I say give our freshman kicker a shot at ASU and see how he does for a whole game. I realize the 5*'s kickers get are basically meaningless, but the stats on Lewis aren't meaningless. If he struggles against ASU that could become an extremely impactful, mistake prone element of our team.

I want to also highlight the quick, 6 day, turnaround before the beav game. The travel to Tempe is impactful, and loss of prep time for the beavs, impactful. What we are headed into is two challenges which we need to get through and will also be indicators of how well a Lanning led team will be able to negotiate next seasons schedule. It is easy to say these are resilient young men, but they are young college students who have classes, tests, and distractions, need I provide pictures again? This isn't so much a test of our team against the next two teams, but our team against the challenges I have mentioned along with many we can't even quantify. This will be a bigger series of tests than we will ever know, I hope. I hope we make it look easier than it is! Ok, I will provide another picture, Oregon Football is many things, not all on the field.

College Football Playoff: How Can Oregon Make It?
Haywarduck replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Good stuff, but much of what is of concern is out of our control. What Georgia, FSU, and really any of the other programs do is out of our control. What is in our control is winning another game on the road against a recently surging, scrappy program. As much as has been said about how it isn't a big deal to travel in the BIG conference, it is. This is why we have had a tough time in the desert. It is a long trip and this will be a test, like our second game was, win on the road, again. Then we need to take care of a team which may lose this weekend because they are so focused on beating Oregon. We got run over by the rodents last year, because we didn't realize how momentum works, and rivalries are tough. This would be our first rivalry win under Lanning, bringing us to 1-3, it won't be easy. On top of the travel it is a short turn around, 6 days instead of 7, with the game on Friday. Then we need to win the title game against whoever shows up, and that undoubtedly is a team that thinks they can beat Oregon. Great analysis, but in the end it comes down to Oregon taking care of its own business. The difficulties won't matter, in the end it will be about dominating and making the best case possible. This needs to happen all the way through January 8th, because we don't want to just make it, we want to win it! -
Don't agree with his analysis that if the Pac-12 had stayed together he would have had to leave to become part of a BIG or SEC program. Winning the Pac-12 would have gotten him to the playoffs. Traveling all over the nation playing in the BIG is going to be tougher. Oregon recruited extremely well, and compete at a high level in the Pac-12. Oregon will continue to recruit well, but how well they travel and win in the BIG is yet to be determined. Thinking the move to the BIG is better, especially as compared to a continued PAC-12 just doesn't add up to me. We have the money, could get the recruits, didn't need to add the travel to get the playoffs as they expand. I don't like the Ducks traveling to Indiana, then Michigan, and then Wisconsin as the season drags on next year. I also don't like the Ducks traveling to Pennsylvania and then New Jersey on consecutive weeks the next year. It is what it is, but not the schedule I would compare favorably to a Pac-12 conference schedule. The one thing I do like is closing the season out playing the dawgs in 2024 and 2025. I also want us to close out 2023 the same way, and a win!
