It seems probable that next season will tell us just how bad........or how good MC and his staff were. One thing about the Cristobal regime is that it was constantly changing, which seems the norm is today's CFB world. The old Oregon way of coaches being here 20+ years seems quite quaint in retrospect, doesn't it? Oregon became a national recruiter under Chip Kelly. Texas was the first well to be plumbed and then we started moving east. Chip wasn't so much a star gazer as he was looking for guys that fit his scheme. Wins piling up helps get the attention of the 4 and 5 star guys. Handing Michigan their hat by scoring a touchdown on a fake Statue of Liberty play followed by a touchdown on a real statue of Liberty is bound to turn some heads. Oregon can now actively recruit players that Bellotti never had a realistic shot at. It was Taggart (first I typed Slick Willie. I gotta stop calling him that. Damn, did it again.) and Cristobal (betcha his mother lives several more years) that started going after stars rather than individuals. I won't bag on going after the stars. Analytics tells us that today's championship teams have a preponderance of 4 and 5 star players. But the hungriest guys I've ever seen play football didn't have that many stars. I believe that math tells us that the more 5* star guys you are around the more prima donnas you are likely to encounter. That's why I'm hoping this staff can meld the Bellotti and Cristobal ways to find exactly the right guys. So far, I'm encouraged with what I've seen. Apparently, Lanning and company are doing well at selling their vision for Oregon football here and now. Winning will bring more sales. 2,3,4,5 stars? I don't care. As long as they're the right guys. From the words and actions I've seen to this point, without even pIaying a game, I believe in this staff more than any since the Kelly administration. It's just my gut. What does my gut know? It wanted Taggart. But it also wanted Altman, so I guess it's hit and miss. For now, my fellow Duck friends, our future seems so bright. I'm puttin' on my shades............

Absolutely terrible. Complete momentum killer. This is the same game the Ducks will lose in the Tourney. For some reason when the offensive spigot gets turned off Oregon cannot turn it on again. And they always react the same way. They stop moving and try to play one- on-one basketball. Or dish it off at the last second to a big guy too far away from the basket. I also thought Dana gave too many different guys too many different minutes. No cohesiveness. The big men's foul situation was something to think about, but that didn't come about until the offense was out of sync. Lights out for 17 minutes and then sputtering like there was water in the gas until the end. I still think it comes down to a lack of floor general. A creator for other people. They damn well better go get their first ever win in Boulder. Looks like it's going to be stuck on the bubble for the near future. Luckily, a long way to go. The eventual regular season champ will have more losses than is the norm, I believe. Still could be the Ducks.

Dana Altman is Working Another Miracle
SmithRiverDuck replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Shooting and improved defense. Also, he's done something with Richardson where WR is not bringing the ball down every time and running the offense as a true PG. The first month Richardson played PG like Anthony Brown plays QB. -

An Early Look at Next Years Football Schedule
SmithRiverDuck replied to DenverDuck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
This particular thread has been mulling over in my head these past couple of days............ I want to be the glass at least half full guy. Heck, I want my glass overflowing. Especially if it's a cocktail........ What if this whole thing just...............GELS! What if our head coach has found a particular group of coaches that can take immediate advantage of what is one of the best situations in all of football? One thing I've gleaned from this process is that we had some really quality behind the scenes people that have chosen to stay. That tells me something about our "front office". Let's say that the enthusiasm for potential is so infectious that EVERYONE is buying in. Especially the guys who play the game. Let's say that the competition between Nix and Thompson/Butterfield (if they were leaving, they would have already left) is too close to call and Nix gets the nod to start at the home game for Georgia (let's call it what it is). Nix has slayed some pretty big SEC giants in his time. We also have that other little card up our sleeve called a guy who knows EVERYTHING about Georgia inside and out. Got to be at least a bit of a talent leveler, eh? Plus Georgia is losing a lot. The real question for Georgia is whether or not they have built a reloading machine of Alabama quality. Speaking of talent, didn't we just have a string of the best recruiting classes in our history? Our cupboard is stocked, baby!.........Somebody needs to motivate these stars to shine! So, we pull off the upset. Remember, most of these men have a win at "the shoe" under their belt. They've been there. They've done it. If this turns out to be the case, I predict that the reaction from the Duck fan base will be measurable on the Richter scale............ If you can beat the Dogs (you can certainly beat the Dawgs. Yes, that point doesn't need to be made, but it always feels SO GOOD to make it) then the only serious threat to a meaningful showdown with the now hated Ootah Ootes is the Pac-12 slaying Utah Cougars. Luckily, it's at home. On a side note, it sure seems like the Mormons have it out for us lately. It seems like the state of Utah has targeted Oregon as a direct impediment to their Pac-12 glory. Did anyone see that BYU basketball beat down earlier this season? Granted, we've had a successful record against them in all major sports and stolen a major percentage of their South Pacific talent. But I think there's a bit of a grudge there. So, my advice to Oregon teams is to be wary of teams from Utah. And my advice to Utah is to plant a few trees. Really, just some foliage of any kind would be helpful......... Now that we've taken care of our "Utah problem", we're just left with a Pac-12 championship game with, hopefully, Chip. As long as it doesn't come at the expense of my Ducks I want the UO tree to be fertile and successful. So, in that vane I hope Mr. Wilcox finishes just below us. A Bulldog beating Pac Champ makes the CFP. Heck, drop a game to those "academically prowess" teams from the Bay if you really have to. I'd prefer the boyz from Bezerkely. I always had a WAY better time in Berkely than I did in Palo Alto, or Stanford, CA. Or whatever they're calling it these days. Plus it get's Mr. Wilcox a contract extension justifying win. I'd prefer it didn't happen. I'm just saying a one loss (to pretty much anybody) Duck team is in the hunt for the CFP. I never did buy that argument last season that a winning out Duck team would get overlooked because of the bad, granted warranted, perception of the Pac. Let's be honest. The only team that kept the Ducks out of last year's playoff was the Ducks............Meanwhile........ Did we (the Pac) win ANY bowl games last season? I can't (or won't) remember. It would certainly justify a few extra cocktails to hopefully forget the last (?) years of Pac football as it relates to the "big boys". Hell, who'm I kidding? We can't even dominate the Mountain West anymore. Here's to future prosperity for ourselves and for our conference compatriots. Cheers. -

Lanning Hires Carlos Locklyn As Running Backs Coach
SmithRiverDuck replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Really good words on both sides about the hire. But I'm so sick of "Coach speak". They're all so good at it. When you're winning bigtime games and making playoff appearances it sounds genius. when you're losing games you're supposed to win it sounds like, well, "Coach speak". Can hardly wait to watch these guys "Do something".............Oooh, probably a bad example. In that case, make your words make you look like a genius........... -
Ducks had options. Chip and Wilcox were just the known quantities. What options did the fuskies have? "Well, there's this guy in Fresno who doesn't seem to suck." I'll trade lines from this flic with anybody, anywhere, any time. Got to live it at Chico State and then came to the physical space of it to matriculate seriously. I knew we were the Deltas, but couldn't be completely sure that the fuskies were the Omegas and had to Wikipedia it before posting. I couldn't remember their names. That's how insignificant UDub has become.

Wow, so much to digest on this whole thread. And so many great points. I think I'd encourage our new coach to take at least one thing from our past (more recent ) great coaches to incorporate in his general viewpoint: Rich Brooks: How to coach up lesser star players to make the sum greater than the parts. Mike Bellotti: Keep innovating and building. Chip Kelly: Once your boot is on the throat of an opponent, do not let up for any reason. If anything, apply more pressure. Things to take away from our less admired coaches: Mark Helfrich: Don't assume the brand sells itself. Always return calls or texts from players. Don't be too busy to let a future NFL pro-bowl quarterback accidentally walk-on to your team. Slick Willy: Sometimes wear glasses while on the field whether you need them or not. That way if you happen to be losing people think, "They're losing, but that guy looks really smart. Maybe they'll come back and win." Works for Harbaugh. MC: You can recruit the biggest stars to Oregon. But learn a little from Brooks and Bellotti about the difference between stars and heart. Stars are great. But if you don't have the heart to go with it, heart wins out.

SERIOUSLY? Is the Pac going 0 for Bowl season?

This is one of the days I wish Cap'n Candy Cane or whomever it was would come to read OBD. I double-dawg dare ya to find me a discussion of Machiavelli on any Miami football forum. I don't believe you'd find one south of the Mason-Dixon line. Finally! A way to poke fun at the south that doesn't resort to tried and true trope of carnal relations between siblings! It's a fine day indeed..... You gotta love the Readers Digest condensed version of Poli Sci 240: Understanding Machiavelli: An action is just and right if it succeeds. If it fails, it is unjust and the prince deserves to be deposed........ Thus, was born the Monday Morning Quarterback: If Prince Pete had just RUN the ball from the 1-yard line instead of trying a STUPID pass, the Sicily Seahawks would have WON the Super Bowl! Fire the bastard!!...........

"One" Immediate Change You'd Like to See in 2022?
SmithRiverDuck replied to a topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Less unnecessary penalties, especially of the unsportsmanlike variety. No standing over your opponent after a play like you're some kind of badass. Prove you're a badass during the play and go about your business. -
From what we've seen so far? We gonna get creamed. Even gave Bobby Hurley his first win in MKA. That made me wanna puke. Hate that guy.

I hate it when I'm busy and read an article and assume it's today's. Yes, last year's article. Interesting that the Pitt page of coaches has no OC listed. Marion is receivers coach.
-
After reading the article you posted (which was awesome) I saw another article where they've extended Norvell's contract. The Seminole chatter going on in the comments below the article have Dillingham all but gone. If he's coming here seems like we could still afford Brennan Marion on staff. Hawaii ain't payin' him a fortune.

This is a great article! Read it this morning. It was an article like this that got me on the Dillingham train. Now I want Marion!

OUT OF CONFERNCE 2022 - AS BAD FOR THE PAC-12 AS WAS 2021?
SmithRiverDuck replied to Jon Joseph's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
If Wittingham is the good guy people say he is, then the only decent thing to do is to let us get revenge on the OOhts and let us be the ones to run him out of coaching.............C'mon Ky, be a mensch................. -
I think the reason we're not already hearing a bunch of names attached to the job so far is that coach Lanning is waiting on his friend Kenny Dillingham. I think the job is his to turn down. Lanning is familiar with him. Remember three years ago when Memphis was knocking the crap out of people? Lanning is inside linebackers coach and Dillingham is OC. If Dillingham gives us the kind of number Memphis had paired with an under 20pts. per game scoring defense? The question is not the Natty. It's how many? Many people want Joe Brady. Maybe that's coach's plan B? If it's not going to be either of those two we will start hearing a slew of names, including Musgrave.
-
I'd like to keep coach Salave'a. How about him as DC with a very involved certain head coach as his "assistant" possibly getting coach Salave'a ready for his own big job in the future. Lupoi can recruit and handle the d-line.
