The "If Not For X, Then Y Would Have Happened" Sports Fallacy
Steven A replied to a topic in Our Beloved Ducks
The ONLY time a game can be reviewed as if such and such didn't happen the result would be different would be a blown call on the last play of a game because the game ends on that play. Witness gutless MLB Commissioner Bud Selig denying Armando Galarraga a perfect game after the 1st base ump, Jim Joyce not Angel Hernandez, called the runner safe with two outs in the ninth. Next play was then final/4th out of the inning. MLB needs to go back and award the perfect game since had replay been in effect, the call would have been overturned. -

The 2024 Ducks Can Learn from 2014’s Struggles
Steven A replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Good comparison David. "They do have one important thing working in their favor right now: time." As a recent podcast asked, "time to get right, or time to panic"? I'm in ""concerned" mode. Every team is an injury or two away from panic. -

Oregon Ducks Football: 3 Things We Need to See vs OSU
Steven A replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Alex, I'm on board for 1 & 3. 2 will take care of itself with good D. And speaking of 2, I wouldn't mind a close game again, since that lets us know, our excrement still stinks, and we should not get too high on ourselves. Keep grinding and get somewhat better each week. -

I don't see how the proposed settlement can go through with all of this crap happening. YOUR Eyeball Test: Where Would YOU Rank the Ducks?
Steven A replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
We should be #1, we are undefeated and have beaten two undefeated at the time teams. You can't do any more than that. Excuse me, Nurse Ratched, the meds are working fine. In all seriousness, we don't deserve a top 10 ranking. But I'm ok with it as we are now considered as much for our brand and hype like many other Power 4 programs. How many times in the past have we seen those late season SEC cupcake games that are lackluster but don't affect rankings? Besides, what doesn't kill you(r playoffs hopes) only makes you stronger and that's my story. To the tune of "It's a fool's game": It's a double U Nothing but a double U Hits you when it's too late Hits you when you're down It's a fool's game Nothing but a fool's game Standing in the cold where it never rains Feeling like you’ve just seen clown show It's a Double U Nothing but a Double U Love the Ducks 'til your arms break Then they let you down It ain't right with no love to spare When you find they don't care for the point spread It ain't wise to need some team As much as we depend on them It's a Double U Nothing but a Double U Hits you when it's too late Hits you when you're down It's a fool's game Nothing but a fool's game -
Glad to see this from Lanning's post-game comments. Q: Just walk us through the execution on the last drive. What point did you decide to go for a field goal? Lanning: "Once it got inside a minute, there were moments where we went back and forth from what we call barrier type play, where we get the ball the way down to the one or two and not score. And then it got to a point where we were comfortable also with getting the score once we were inside a certain frame. But more important than anything, possession of the ball. Felt like we got to a point where we were really comfortable making the kick, really high batting percentage for us with those kicks. So it kind of transitioned throughout the series. Started off as, you know, two minute go score, and then transition as the time went down, and once they utilized their timeouts to really back it off into more of what we call barrier situation, to not score and make sure they don't have any time on the clock for them to have that opportunity." The decision seems to have evolved play by play.

Oregon Fans Reappraise Expectations, or NOT?
Steven A replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Expectations are inversely proportion to the pucker fact. I just hope we will be one of the logs in that jam behind Ohio St. and dare I say it, "that team down south". Stein and company now need to start game planning for a porous Oline. One of the things that bothered me was Dan's/Will's play calling late in the 3rd when we were behind the sticks deep in our territory and they run 3 in a row Mari style. Those two missed bombs are glaring. Dillion has to have better touch and anticipate the separation. -
As the Giants broadcasters would say "What a laugher". Two weeks in a row a W that in the past may have been Ls. I don't care how we fall in the polls, just win baby win. Especially next week. and the next etc.

If it goes out of bounds in the endzone it is a touchback, otherwise a live ball.
