Aug 4 update Sunday's UO slate featured action in track and field, women's basketball and men's golf. A daily recap and preview of current and former UO athletes competing at the 2024 Paris Games. The Day That Was … Two-time U.S. Trials champion Cole Hocker advanced to his second-career Olympic final in the 1500 meters by way of Sunday's semifinal run. Hocker eased through the finish line in 3:32.54, good for a third-place showing in the first of two heats. The top six in each semifinal advanced to the final which goes off Tuesday at 11:50 a.m. PT. Hocker will be joined in the final by fellow Americans Yared Nuguse and Hobbs Kessler who finished 1-2 in heat two in 3:31.72 and 3:31.97, respectively. In a game that decided the winner of Group C and featured three former Duck stars, it was Team USA and Sabrina Ionescu that secured an 87-68 over a Germany team with Nyara Sabally and Satou Sabally. The win marked the 58th straight for the United States in Olympic play, as it seeks an eighth straight Olympic gold medal. Ionescu finished the contest with a team-high-tying five assists, six points and two rebounds. Satou Sabally led Germany with 15 points to go along with five boards and two helpers. Nyara Sabally missed her second straight game due to an injury. Both Germany and the United States qualified for the quarterfinal round, which gets underway Wednesday. The U.S. will take on Nigeria at 12:30 p.m. PT while Germany draws host France for a 9 a.m. PT tip-off. In men's golf, Wyndham Clark shot a 6-under-par 65 for the second straight day, helping him finish in a tie for 14th. The round moved Clark nine spots up the leaderboard. He shot in the 60s in each of the final three rounds after an opening-round 4-over 75. Shana Grebo, who received a warm welcome from the home French crowd, made her Olympic debut Sunday with a seventh-place finish in her opening-round heat of the 400-meter hurdles. She clocked a time of 56.70 and did not advance directly to the semifinal. However, Grebo will have an opportunity to run in Monday's repechage round (1:50 a.m. PT). In other first-round action, Aneta Konieczek (POL) lowered her lifetime best in the 3,000 steeplechase to 9:24.43 and finished ninth in heat one. She was 22nd overall at the end of the round and did not advance to the final. Konieczek was making her second-career appearance at the Olympics. A Look Ahead … Monday marks the semifinal round for incoming UO transfer Elisa Mevius and her Germany 3x3 team, who take on Canada in the first semifinal at 9:30 a.m. PT. Germany finished pool play with a 6-1 record to earn the top seed in the knockout round, including a 19-15 win over the Canadians last Thursday. With a win, Mevius and Germany would advance to the gold-medal game later on Monday against the winner of the United States and Spain at 1 p.m. PT. A loss means Germany will fight for bronze at 12 p.m. PT. Jorinde Van Klinken (NED) will throw for Olympic hardware Monday morning in the discus final. The 12-woman field gets started 11:30 a.m. PT. The top eight after three attempts will secure three additional throws. The final will be streamed with an event-specific broadcast on Peacock.

August 3rd update Entering Sunday's final round, Wyndham Clark has moved into the top 25 on the leaderboard. A daily recap and preview of current and former UO athletes competing at the 2024 Paris Games. The Day That Was … Elisa Mevius and Germany's 3x3 team completed the group stage with an 18-15 win over Spain. The victory was not only Germany's fifth straight win but it also clinched the top overall seed headed into the knockout round, earning a bye into the semifinal round on Monday. Against Spain, Mevius went 2-for-3 from the field (1-for-1 from the free throw line) in scoring four points and grabbing a rebound. Germany will meet Canada, who defeated Australia in the first play-in game, on Monday for a spot in the gold-medal game later that day. In holding off host France, Germany improved to 5-1 in pool play and sit alone in first place in the pool standings. Germany has one more group stage game against Spain on Saturday at 9 a.m. PT before the medal round begins. If Germany wins, it will automatically qualify for the semifinal round on Monday. UO women's basketball alum Maite Cazorla and Spain completed a sweep of Group A with its 70-62 win over Serbia early Saturday. Spain, who had already clinched a spot in the quarterfinal round, got seven points and five assists from Cazorla. Spain will await the completion of group play for its quarterfinal opponent on Tuesday. In men's golf, Wyndham Clark posted his best round of the Games with a 6-under-par 65 to move 23 spots up the leaderboard. Clark sits in a tie in 23rd place at 5-under par for the tournament after recording eight birdies on Saturday. A Look Ahead … UO women's basketball will have three former players in the same game on Sunday, as the United States (Sabrina Ionescu) and Germany (Nyara Sabally, Satou Sabally) will square off in their final group-stage contest at 8:15 a.m. PT. Both the U.S. and Germany are 2-0 and headed for the quarterfinal round, with the winner advancing as the group's top seed. Satou Sabally put up 33 points in Germany's win over Japan, equaling the eighth-highest point total in any Olympic Games contest. Ionescu and Team USA seek its 58th straight Olympic win on their quest for an eighth consecutive gold medal. Clark will tee off his final round at Le Golf National at approximately 2:17 a.m. PT, and will be paired with Shane Lowry (Ireland) and Stephan Jaeger of Germany. The Ducks' track and field schedule resumes Sunday beginning with past Pac-12 champions Aneta Konieczek (POL) and Shana Grebo (FRA) in the opening rounds of the steeplechase and 400 hurdles, respectively, during the morning session. Cole Hocker (USA) was the second-fastest overall qualifier from the first round of the 1500 meters and returns to the track at 12:10 p.m. (PT) for his semifinal. The track and field morning session—EARLY Sunday morning in Eugene—at Stade de France will be air on the USA Network and stream on Peacock beginning at 1 a.m. Both Konieczek and Hocker are making their second-career appearances in the Olympics.

Aug 2nd update A daily recap and preview of current and former UO athletes competing at the 2024 Paris Games. The Day That Was … Elisa Mevius and Germany's 3x3 team extending their winning streak to four straight games with an 18-15 win over China, followed by a 14-13 win over France. Mevius scored four points and grabbed three rebounds against China, helping Germany qualify for the knockout round. Dillon Brooks and Team Canada completed an undefeated group phase with an 88-85 victory over Spain. Brooks made his third straight start and finished with 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting to go with four rebounds and three assists. Canada will await its quarterfinal opponent, with the round beginning Monday. In men's golf, Wyndham Clark bounced back from an opening-round 4-over par to shoot 3-under in round two on Friday. He made six birdies on the day, with four coming on the back nine. Clark moved up 10 spots on the leaderboard and sits in a tie for 46th place, with three tied atop the leaderboard at 11-under par. Friday also marked the beginning of the track and field schedule which featured qualifying efforts for past UO standouts Cole Hocker (USA) and Jorinde Van Klinken (NED), both making a second Olympic appearance. Hocker, a three-time NCAA champion during his time in Eugene, was the second-fastest qualifier in the opening round of the 1500 meters. Down the final home stretch, Hocker used his customary late kick to go from eighth to second, crossing the line in 3:35.27 to secure his spot into Sunday's semifinals. The top six in each of the three heats earned automatic advancement to the next round. Competing in the first of two qualifying groups, Van Klinken got the discus out to 64.81m/212-7 on her second attempt of the day. That was beyond the automatic qualifier—64.00 meters—to clinch a spot in the final after missing out by two places in 2021. Van Klinken's mark was good for fifth overall in Friday's qualifying. The top 12 return to the infield at Stade de France for Monday's final. Stade de France was the site of the rugby sevens competition to start the Olympics last week. A Look Ahead … UO women's basketball alum Maite Cazorla and Spain seek an unbeaten group phase when they take on Serbia in their final Group A contest at 4:30 a.m. PT. Spain has already qualified for the quarterfinals and await their opponent, with quarterfinal action scheduled for Tuesday. Mevius and her German 3x3 team compete in their final pool contest at 9 a.m. PT against Spain. Germany is qualified for the medal round and sits atop the pool standings. The top two teams in group play advance to the semifinals on Monday with the next four teams competing in the play-in games later on Saturday. In men's golf, Clark's third round begins at approximately 12:33 a.m. PT a Le Golf National. Clark will be paired with Matthias Schmid (Germany) and Gavin Green (Malaysia). There will be no Ducks in action during Saturday's track and field schedule.
