Plaschke: Justin Herbert shows why he's potentially the greatest young QB in NFL history WWW.LATIMES.COM Justin Herbert was not having a great game against the Titans, but with the game on the line in the final seconds he leads Chargers on key drive to victory. He was terrible. He was tortured. He threw two interceptions. He tossed a ball off a face mask. He flung passes to nowhere. He couldn’t find the end zone. He couldn’t find himself. In the final minutes against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday at SoFi Stadium, Chargers’ quarterback Justin Herbert was beaten. But he was still barking. “I got it!” he screamed at his teammates on the sideline. “I got it fellas! You just give us a chance and we got it!” Moments later, with the score tied and 44 seconds remaining and the ball on their 23-yard line, the Chargers gave him that chance. And, yeah, he got it. Wrapping the team in his giant hands, owning the city on his giant shoulders, doing it all with the tiniest of smiles, Justin Herbert got every inch of it. “There was no flinch,” he said. No blink, all bling, his three perfect passes executed with no timeouts leading the Chargers on a drive that resulted in a game-winning 43-yard field goal by Cameron Dicker to give them a 17-14 victory and put them on a direct path to the playoffs. “It’s like poetry in motion, watching Justin,” said Chargers defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day. It’s lyrical and meaningful and fun. It’s like witnessing a young Kobe Bryant, a fresh Mike Trout, a clean-shaven Clayton Kershaw, a cradle filled with greatness, the start of something enormous and enchanting.

Money is always going to be a factor. I’ve interpreted what Moore was saying is that it wasn’t the only factor or perhaps even the most important factor. The consistent story I’m hearing is he wants to start as a true Freshman. Good luck. It happens but only when a team doesn’t have a better choice and is always fraught with loses and disappointment. He’d likely be fighting for playoff spots in a couple of years at Oregon. At UCLA he’ll be fighting for relevancy and to stay above “500.” Good luck.

Bo Nix and Dante Moore: Did Lanning Do it Right?

There is the long term as well as the short term. Honesty will pay off in trust by parents and players in future recruiting battles. If Moore can’t handle being on the bench for one year, well buh-bye. Go play for UCLA and be a middle of the pack team in the Big-10. My guess is that Moore will be sitting on the UCLA bench, anyway. At least for a good part of his first year. -
Anyone Else Miss Mike Leach Sometimes?
lownslowav8r replied to Haywarduck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
That he died, yes. Never thought much of how he treated his players when he was alive, either. -
I don’t think that coach exists. Look at all the players Oregon is trying to flip.

I’ll take that bet, too. I’ve always felt he was one of the "tuf guys" who mistake their mean streak for real mental toughness and courage. -
I’m still trying to wrap my head around this. But I guess he wants to start and play close to home for at least a few games each year. Perhaps he is not mobile enough to play well for Oregon. However, he’s never going to play in a national championship for a very middling UCLA team stuck in the middle of a tough conference. Good luck young man. Moving on.

Also, given the ability to transfer, checking out a potential future home (if Oregon doesn’t work out) is smart.

Universal income for athletes. I like it. How it would be funded is the tricky part.

I think you are wise in taking the conflict with others out of the equation. That is difficult to deal with face to face (where people have a harder time dehumanizing you) but when done, virtually or through phone...very difficult. As someone who works in practical morality (practical as in I deal, face to face, with people struggling with moral and spiritual change and not at their best) and as an expert in technology ethics I can say that, (1) people have always been selfish, and (2) social media has made it much worse. A good culture creates incentives to not act that way, but those cultures are very rare. Our selfish culture is the norm. There is a lot of money to be made in exacerbating and creating conflict. In the online world, angry people post more --and see more advertising-- than people who aren't angry. So social media "nudges" people toward expressing their anger and contempt for others. This unethical way of making money is a deep and toxic form of selfishness and is not new, just a new technique in making money by harming others. Also, social media creates silos where people use derogatory terms for others and it is "okay" because "everyone does it." This creates issues when people move out of their silo into more inclusive communities (such as FishDuck) where not everyone believes as they do, and those derogatory terms are now seen by folks outside that narrow silo. The response is, well, "not always positive." I've had a life changing experience triggered by social media. I enjoy an activity that I always knew was dominated by people who don't see the world as I do politically. That wasn't an issue for many years. I figured that we'd shake hands when we met and enjoy our shared activity in peace. Social media taught me that this was rather naïve. I was on social media in sites dedicated to my hobby and many people started to speak about those who believe as I do with derogatory terms and, sadly, hatred and contempt. Its gotten so bad that I've come to realize that a certain percentage of "my" community would injury or kill me in the right circumstances. My enjoyment of my hobby has dramatically decreased since I no longer trust many of my fellow participants and I have reduced my physical and online social participation. So, thank you Charles, and the rest of the moderators for doing your best to create an environment safe and enjoyable for everyone. This site and the work you do is deeply appreciated.

What If Lanning Hired An Extremely Controversial DB Coach?
lownslowav8r replied to Haywarduck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
No, not yet. I have to think there are equally good coaches without the poor judgment. -
Let’s just say, if I was a QB prospect, I’d be going elsewhere. What Deion is selling wouldn’t sell me, but I’m not a young D1 level football player deeply embedded in football culture and ethos.

What is Oregon Football’s Standard?
lownslowav8r replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
This is a tricky question and I’m not sure it can be quantified by win-loss ratio. For me it comes down to “am I proud of their effort and determination,” which is incredibly subjective. Add to that no team in recent history has won all 9 conference games. Then throw in the opaque nature of college football injuries and player status and often what is going on with the team is a guessing game. For me this year would have been a success with a win against the Beavs where we were up by several scores with a ESPN win % over 99%. That loss reminds me too much of past collapses by poorly lead Oregon teams. So to me this was not a successful year or perhaps more accurately a year where the team didn’t play to their potential. -

I would think that as a qb if he was going in the first round the money would far exceed any NIL. My guess is that he feels his draft stock will improve if he stays.

Is a "Bandwagon" Fan Still an Oregon Fan?
lownslowav8r replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Ah, a “purity” argument. Luckily this is sports not religion and the group is pretty mellow. Given what I’ve seen where purity arguments get heated (very ugly and often deadly dangerous) I tend toward saying a person is a fan if they say they are a fan. If we aren’t careful only folks who attended the Toilet Bowl and still root for Oregon will be considered “real fans.” -
Seeing a lot of separate threads on this subject. Perhaps we can speculate, celebrate, or commiserate in one place?

Fun to see us return to a high powered offense and what made Oregon great. Now, we need a pass rush.
