  2. Kefense Hynson Named Interim Head Coach Of Oregon State Football Program Kefense Hynson was named the Interim Head Coach of the Oregon State football program effective immediately, Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Scott Barnes announced Saturday. “Coach Hynson is an integral and valued member of Oregon State’s renowned coaching staff,” Barnes said. “Known by coaches and players for his total commitment, not only to success on the field but also to the holistic well-being of student-athletes, Coach Hynson is ready to lead the program through this interim period.” Joining Oregon State in 2018, Hynson served as the Wide Receivers Coach/Passing Game Coordinator under Jonathan Smith and was part of the coaching staff that led the Beavers to three straight bowl appearances, including a 10-win season in 2022 and breaking into the Top 10 during this year’s College Football Playoff Rankings... 3. Washington QB Michael Penix Got Too Nervous To Watch Game-Winning Field Goal Try After leading his team to an 11-0 record, Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. had a far less memorable outing in their 12th and final regular season game. It was so rough that he couldn't bare to watch his team attempt a game-winning field goal. Penix completed just 54.5-percent of his passes for 204 yards and two touchdowns with one interception against the Washington State Cougars today. He could have had two more if Washington State's defenders had gotten better grips on the ball. So when Washington lined up for a game-winning 42-yard field goal attempt with five seconds remaining, Penix was apparently too down on himself to even look at what was going on. But Washington kicker Grady Goss nailed the kick to send the Huskies to 12-0 and into their final Pac-12 Championship Game with their best record in decades. Be sure to see pics/video in article... 6. Canzano: Jonathan Smith gone to Michigan State, what now? Oregon State must act quickly. Jonathan Smith is gone. He’s the new football coach at Michigan State. I had Smith penciled in to leave Oregon State for USC or Washington someday. Maybe he’ll still end up at one of those places eventually, but on Saturday he traded an uncertain future in the “Pac-2” for a tricky challenge in the Big Ten. Will he regret it? And what now for Oregon State? Those are questions to ask. Canzano: Jonathan Smith gone to Michigan State, what now? WWW.JOHNCANZANO.COM Oregon State must act quickly.
  7. Dontae Manning records first career INT in strong fill-in duty showing Oregon junior cornerback Dontae Manning picked off his first career pass in Saturday's 31-7 win over Oregon State in what his first start of the 2023 season. With starting corner Jahlil Florence out with injury, junior Dontae Manning made his first start of the season and earned his first career interception in the process. Florence was rarely out of Manning's thoughts throughout the game. Even though his younger teammate's emergence has meant a smaller role for Manning this season, this one was dedicated to his ailing teammate, he says. "I told Jahlil maybe two or three days ago that this game was going to be for him. He wasn't going to be able to be out there with us. I told him this was going to be for him," he said of Friday's 31-7 victory over Oregon State. "Just to be able to play for my brothers or through my brothers, that's all I wanted." 10. Ducks defense takes pride in stopping OSU rush attack following last year's fourth quarter A year after Oregon State ran for 19 straight times, Oregon's rush defense held the Beavers to under 60 yards in a tremendous performance. Ahead of the Ducks' regular-season finale victory over No. 16 Oregon State, replays of the 2022 matchup echoed throughout the Oregon locker room. It was a quarter that saw Oregon blow a 21-point lead and saw the Beavers run for 19 straight times. A year ago, Oregon's defense was pulverized repeatedly by the Beavers' talented offensive line and running back combination of Damien Martinez and Deshaun Fenwick. As 5:40 PM PST rolled around, all of Oregon's offseason efforts to turn itself into a more physically taxing defense would come to fruition. Oregon State ran multiple play-action passes early on, but Oregon's front seven continued to get through the line and send pressure against DJ Uiagalelei. Ultimately, when the run game got going for the Beavers, Oregon was there to limit any attempt. Oregon State finished with 53 yards on the ground in 24 attempts. In other words, the Beavers averaged 2.2 yards per carry, the lowest yards per carry since 2019 against Washington and the lowest rushing output of the season by 78 yards. The total fell 215 yards short of Oregon State's total a season ago, as the Ducks' defense proved itself, yet again, at the highest level in front of a national audience. 12. Jonathan Smith will owe Oregon State a $3 million buyout New Michigan State coach Jonathan Smith had a buyout in his coaching contract at Oregon State, so the Spartans will have to cough up a nice chunk of change to the Beavers. According to Steve Berkowitz of USA Today, Smith will owe Oregon State a $3 million buyout. Those buyouts are typically covered by the hiring program. Smith was making $4.85 million per year at Oregon State. His hire was the first major hire in a coaching carousel cycle that figures to be plenty interesting with a handful of high-profile gigs open. Smith just wrapped up an 8-4 regular season with the Beavers to cap off a successful three-year stretch. He took over in 2018 and rebuilt the Pac-12 squad. He went 34-35 in six seasons at Oregon State, including a 10-3 season in 2022 that finished with a Las Vegas Bowl win. 13. 3 takeaways from Oregon's near-flawless win over Oregon State Oregon left no doubt. The sixth-ranked Ducks never trailed, going wire-to-wire for a 31-7 win over the 16th-ranked Oregon State Beavers Friday night to clinch a spot in the Pac-12 Championship Game. Oregon gets its rematch with No. 4 Washington. One win away. The Ducks agonized over last season’s loss to Oregon State for 12 months. Teams get into a rivalry game and there can be a tendency to minimize the “extra” that comes with it. Coaches say it’s just another game. Players say they’re treating it like a normal week because that’s what everyone preaches in the meetings. Not the Ducks. Coach Dan Lanning kicked the week off by saying the game was the Ducks’ Super Bowl. Players put last year’s fourth quarter on a loop in the locker room. Brandon Dorlus even said he came back for the 2023 season to right a wrong and beat the Beavs. Oregon wanted this football game. And so the Ducks (11-1, 8-1 Pac-12) went out and took it by the throat. Here are three takeaways from the game... 3 takeaways from Oregon’s near-flawless win over Oregon State SATURDAYOUTWEST.COM Oregon routs Oregon State to clinch a spot in the Pac-12 title game. 14. Jon Gold: Ducks blowout of No. 16 Beavers proves they are Playoff-ready This wasn’t a version of the Civil War so much as it was the United States vs. Granada. This wasn’t a matchup of ranked teams, this was a future Big Ten power vs. a program with no conference at all. This was inevitably vs. uncertainty, dominance vs. doubt. Oregon so thoroughly dismantled Oregon State on Friday night, so ruthlessly took the Beavers out of their own game in a 31-7 Ducks win, the question isn’t if Oregon can handle Washington in next Friday’s Pac-12 title game, it whether any team outside or Athens can dance with the Ducks whatsoever. It’s not fair to say that this one was over in the first 10 minutes. Maybe the first 11. Oregon went 88 yards and almost 9 minutes for a touchdown on its first possession of the game, forced an unsuccessful 4th-down conversion on Oregon State’s first drive, then went 58 yards on 8 plays to go up 14-0 early in the 2nd quarter. Just when the Beavers showed some moxie late in the 2nd — driving 80 yards on 25 plays, capped off by a DJ Uiagalelei to Silas Bolden 9-yard score — Oregon responded with a 5-play, 77-yard touchdown drive as Bo Nix found Troy Franklin for the 41-yard touchdown. And the 2nd half? Forget about it. New verse, same as the first. Pure destruction. A dozen games into an 11-1 season, the Ducks may have just played their most complete game of the year... 15. Rivalry Win Sends Ducks To Title Game Everything is still in front of the Oregon football team. And now the Ducks have a chance next week to realize two monumental goals in this 2023 football season. No. 6 Oregon will play for the Pac-12 Championship after wrapping up the fourth 11-win regular season in school history with a 31-7 victory Friday over No. 16 Oregon State, before the fourth-largest crowd in Autzen Stadium history, 59,987 fans. The Ducks (11-1, 8-1 Pac-12) will play for the conference title next Friday in Las Vegas against the team that handed them their only loss of this season, Washington. Friday's win not only kept the UO football team in the running for a Pac-12 title, it kept the Ducks in the thick of the College Football Playoff race as well. Senior quarterback Bo Nix burnished his credentials for the Heisman Trophy by going 33-of-40 for 367 yards and two touchdowns, plus a rushing touchdown, helping Oregon to its sixth straight win. "I've said all season, we want to be playing our best football at the end of the season," UO coach Dan Lanning said. "We are right now." 16. No, Oregon fans should not worry about DC Tosh Lupoi taking the Oregon State job Sometimes when you see a bit of news or speculation, you have to wave it off. In our world, anything is possible. But likely? That’s a different story. On Saturday morning, it was officially announced that former Oregon State Beavers’ head coach Jonathan Smith would be taking over the top job for the Michigan State Spartans. He leaves his alma mater after six years, and three-consecutive bowl-eligible seasons. With Smith gone, it has led to speculation on who the next guy will be in Corvallis as they conduct their national search for a new head coach. Many of the names being thrown out make some sense. Barry Odom? Sure. Trent Bray? Definitely. Ryan Grubb? Eh, probably not, but it’s worth a shot. There was one name that I saw thrown out on Saturday morning that made me laugh, though. Oregon Ducks’ defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi. No, that’s not happening... No, Oregon DC Tosh Lupoi is not taking over as the Oregon State HC DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM Oregon Ducks’ DC Tosh Lupoi has been named a candidate for the Oregon State job, in the wake of Jonathan Smith’s departure.
  17. Dan Lanning Comments on Status of Oregon Cornerback Jahlil Florence The Ducks were without one of their top cornerbacks Friday night against the Beavers. The No. 6 Oregon Ducks defeated the No. 16 Oregon State Beavers 31-7 on Friday night in Eugene. The win was fueled by another dominant effort from Oregon's defense, even though they were without starting cornerback Jahlil Florence. After the game, head coach Dan Lanning was asked about how close both Florence and true freshman Rodrick Pleasant were to being able to play against Oregon State. "Time will tell really on those guys," Lanning said. "But I think that's where it goes back to strength in numbers for us and what that allows us to have. Guys that can go out there and compete. We had a lot of guys that can perform on our team. When their number's called they're ready to answer that bell." Florence was seen on the sideline using crutches Friday... Nix also rushed for 31 yards and another score against an 8-4 Oregon State team whose previous three losses were only by a combined eight points. 20. Joe Freeman: As Oregon State Beavers fall to Ducks, a season of uncertainty reaches a painful finish As Anthony Gould strolled into a makeshift interview tent outside Autzen Stadium on Friday, he had tears in his eyes and a faraway look on his face. The Oregon State Beavers had just suffered a 31-7 gut punch against the rival Oregon Ducks in a game that was even more lopsided than the scoreboard suggested. And as the OSU junior wide receiver sat down to speak to reporters afterward, the weight of the moment was visibly heavy, the emotion of the defeat — and the season — noticeably raw. “We’ve been through a lot this year,” Gould said. For three months, amid unprecedented uncertainty, the only guarantee for the Beavers was the game in front of them. A home opener against UC Davis … a Friday night statement meeting against Utah … a visit to Deion Sanders’ Colorado Buffaloes … an emotional — and perhaps final — trip to Autzen. As the outside noise echoed around them, as Oregon State administrators spoke before lawmakers at the Oregon state capitol and university lawyers traveled to rural Washington courtrooms, the Beavers disregarded the distractions and tried to band together for one another. So Friday was about more than a game for Gould and the No. 16 Beavers. It was about more than the conclusion of another regular season... Joe Freeman: As Oregon State Beavers fall to Ducks, a season of uncertainty reaches a painful finish WWW.OREGONLIVE.COM After months of ignoring the outside noise, reality finally arrived for the Beavers on Friday. And it wasn’t pleasant.

  24. Bo Nix's Autzen Stadium swan song a special one Oregon quarterback Bo Nix played his final game at Autzen Stadium on Friday night, going out in style with a record-setting performance in the team's 31-7 win over rival OSU. Friday's 31-7 win over Oregon State will be a hard one to forget. For Bo Nix, Friday was so much more. It brought the culmination of two historic seasons at Autzen Stadium, and sent the fifth-year senior off with one of the most memorable Senior Days in school history. In a season full of remarkable performances, Nix brought the A-game to the Civil War rivalry. He completed more than 80 percent of his passes for the fifth time this season, and accumulated more than 350 yards through the air for the fourth straight game.
