  2. Mehringer on TE Patrick Hebert: 'We're seeing his skillset blossom' During the 2022 season, Patrick Herbert had his fair share of productive moments. For starters, his first touchdown catch came against Cal, a 40-yard catch and run that showcased his talent and athleticism in the open field, a trait that earned him a four-star recruiting grade. Herbert was an excellent blocker in 12 or 13 personnel sets the Ducks liked to run. But the touchdown grab and other catches along the way showed his true potential of a "do-it-all" tight end that injuries had clouded. While Herbert admitted he was 100-percent last season, he was usually option No. 4 in a crowded tight end room with Terrance Ferguson, Moliki Matavao, and Cam McCormick. The 2023 season will provide the best opportunity for Herbert to become a mainstay in the new Will Stein offense, as Ferguson was the only returner from the room a year ago. Mehringer on TE Patrick Hebert: 'We're seeing his skillset blossom' 247SPORTS.COM Heading into his first fully healthy season in over two years, Patrick Herbert is beginning to shine in fall camp.
  3. OL Nishad Strother repping at both guard spots as offensive line competition continues in fall camp It would never be easy for Oregon to replace one of the best offensive lines in football. Four of its five starters are off to the NFL or coaching careers, as Steven Jones remained the lone returner. Under head coaches Mario Cristobal and Dan Lanning, the Ducks have assembled talent along the offensive line, and that talent will be tested in the 2023 season. With, essentially, four spots up for grabs, fall camp has had more competition than in the past few years. Among the additions to the offensive line this offseason was East Carolina transfer Nishad Strother, a multi-year starter for the Pirates and another proven piece to add to the competition. Strother, at ECU, started all 13 games at left guard in 2022 and has appeared in 34 contests with 30 starts. He spent time as an offensive tackle early in his career but worked as the team's starting left guard for the past two years. Per PFF, the former Havelock High School product recorded 843 offensive snaps last season, grading out with a 72.8 offensive mark. He earned a 57.9 grade in pass protection and a solid 77.0 run-blocking grade. 4. Tight ends coach Drew Mehringer uncertain if they'll use a four-man rotation again Four Oregon tight ends played at least 200 snaps a season ago. Under position coach Drew Mehringer, the quartet rotated with great regularity, and Terrance Ferguson, Cam McCormick and Moliki Matavao made six starts each. Mehringer isn't sure if they'll rotate with the same frequency this year. Simply put, this year's room lacks some of the experience of last year's group. "We've got three guys who've played. So, we'll see how that works out for us. I'm not sure just yet," he said following Wednesday's practice. "It'll be interesting to see how it plays out. I don't know what we're willing to say just yet. I think we're still learning our team and how they dynamics all fit together, but I do think we have some guys who can play and help us win some games. So, we'll see." Both McCormick and Matavao are gone. Ferguson and Patrick Herbert, who played the fourth most snaps (219), are joined by Ole Miss transfer Casey Kelly as the team's veterans. If the Ducks are to get back to a four-player rotation, the fourth will likely be true freshman Kenyon Sadiq. An elite recruit, Sadiq enrolled in January to prepare himself for early playing time. While Mehringer has raved about his approach, he's not quite sure what the 6-foot-3 and 235 pound frosh's role will be this season. 5. Big Ten Meet n' Greet: Getting to know Iowa with Hawkeyes Wire The Oregon Ducks and Iowa Hawkeyes represent two drastically different philosophies in the world of college football. While Oregon’s main football tradition is the idea of change and ingenuity, the opposite could be said for Iowa. Head coach Kirk Ferentz has been with the Hawkeyes since 1999, and he stands as the longest-tenured college football head coach. Contrarily, Oregon has now had six head coaches since Ferentz has been at Iowa. Despite the differences, both the Ducks and Hawkeyes have a tradition of winning. Iowa has 13 conference championships to its name and five national championships from back in the 20th century. The two teams have only met a handful of times on the gridiron, with Oregon holding a 2-1 series advantage. To help give us a better sense of who the Hawkeyes are, and what some of the Iowa fans think about the Oregon Ducks, we sat down with Josh Helmer, the managing editor of USA TODAY’s Hawkeyes Wire. Here is that conversation... Oregon Football: Getting to know Iowa with Hawkeyes Wire DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM Oregon fans, meet the Iowa Hawkeyes. 6. Deion Sanders blasts Colorado players for not joining fight in practice Coming off a 1-11 season a year ago, new Colorado football coach Deion Sanders wants his team to fight harder in 2023. Apparently, he means that literally. A minor scuffle broke out during Wednesday's practice, but rather than stepping in to break things up – as some of his assistants did – Sanders admonished his players for not being more aggressive. "I seen two of you walking off, over there, and you’ve got a key teammate fighting," Sanders interjected. "Where they do that at? Where they do that at?" Not here, the players acknowledged. "If one fights, we all fight," Sanders admonished. "You understand that? I don’t want to see you all walking off when somebody’s fighting. Never again!" 7. Oregon Ducks update 2023 roster with notable weight gains, losses The Oregon Ducks added a lot of weight over the past year. 10. 'Living his dream:' Oregon football's Luke Basso earns praise for prowess at long snapper On Tuesday night, the Oregon football team released a highlight package of its recent scrimmage held Saturday afternoon. There were big hits, celebrations, quarterbacks throwing passes - the usual for players that typically enjoy the spotlight. There was even Camden Lewis attempting a field goal, with what looked like punter Ross James holding the ball in place for him to kick, with another zoomed in shot of a player making a hold for a placekick. Nowhere in the video was Oregon’s likely new starting long snapper, Luke Basso, who has earned praise from several of his coaches and teammates. But that just comes with the position. 12. Who will have biggest impact for Oregon football's return game in 2023? Oregon football coach Dan Lanning has a simple checklist when it comes to finding a primary kickoff or punt return specialist. “A guy that can catch the ball, own the ball, and then score,” he said. The first step hasn’t been too much of a problem for the Ducks of late. Junior receiver Kris Hutson handled most of the kickoff and punt return duties last season after focusing mostly on kickoffs in 2021. Though Hutson ranked in the middle of the pack for average yards per return, averaging just under 20 yards per kick return and 4.2 yards per punt return, he kept mistakes at a minimum. Now, the Ducks are looking to get to those next two steps. Oregon hasn’t had a player return a kickoff for a score since Mykael Wright housed two kickoffs in 2019 and hasn’t returned a punt for a score since Ugochukwu Amadi against UCLA in 2018. Who will have biggest impact for Oregon football's return game in 2023? WWW.REGISTERGUARD.COM Ranking in the middle of the Pac-12 last season in return yards, the Ducks have some intriguing options this season to get over the top.
  13. Drew Mehringer discusses Matayo Uiagalelei, Ducks' TE room depth During the spring football season in Eugene, an injury to starting tight end Terrance Ferguson caused a little bit of unease for the Oregon Ducks. With Ferguson out, the depth at the position was waning. Patrick Herbert and true freshman Kenyon Sadiq were the only scholarship players suited up in that spot during the spring game. Fortunately, the Ducks had true freshman EDGE Matayo Uiaglelei that they could lean on as well. At 6-foot-5, 265 pounds, Uiagalelei excelled as a pass-catcher in high school. Though he came to Oregon as an elite pass-rusher, but his versatility allowed the Ducks to plug him into the offense for a few plays during the annual scrimmage. 17. Oregon Football Fall Camp Updates: Practice No. 12 The Ducks were outside for a fully-padded practice on Wednesday, a day after wildfire smoke forced the team inside. With winds pushing the elements east, the air quality was much improved, although a dull haze remained. The day marked the media's first time at practice following Saturday's scrimmage. It would appear that brought some bumps and bruises, as eight scholarship players were not spotted by media. 18. Canzano: Life and death of Herman Ho-Ching is a tough tale It was hot so Herman Ho-Ching and his family went swimming on Sunday. The former University of Oregon running back climbed onto a concrete water-intake facility located on the bank of the Clackamas River and jumped into the water below. He surfaced. Then, climbed up and did it again. Ho-Ching died on Sunday. He was 44. Those familiar with that part of the river tell me it’s fairly deep in that spot. They’d be surprised if he hit anything. Also, Clackamas County Sheriff’s deputies reported the water temperature was “cool” and the current “mild” but none of that will bring a loving father and husband back. A spokesperson for the Clackamas County Sheriff’s department said Ho-Ching jumped several times from a spot on the concrete structure. When he didn’t surface after the final jump and nobody could locate him, someone dialed 911. Marine rescue rushed to the scene. Fire agencies responded. This is a good article, with interviews from Mike Bellotti, his high school coach, and teammates. 20. Oregon Ducks Can Still Sign Prized Mater Dei Trio Oregon is in a sweet spot when it comes to their 2024 recruiting class. With 22 verbal commitments, they have at least one commit at every position and have done a lot of their heavy lifting. Now, as Dan Lanning and company eye the start of the season, they can hone their focus in on priority targets that will likely commit and potentially sign between now and December. Three of those recruits all attend the same school: Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, California. The Monarchs are ranked No. 1 in the country by MaxPreps and will open their season on Friday against the No. 15-ranked Corona Centennial Huskies. To access the article, click here.
