Pac-12 Oregon's Coverage of Men's Basketball
Pennsylvania Duck replied to NJDuck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
A Look Back At The Kamikaze Kids The Kamikaze Kids era in Oregon men’s basketball refers to the period in the mid-70’s when Coach Harter was the men’s head coach. Harter was hired in 1971 after having coached at the University of Pennsylvania. Although the Ducks name and the Oregon Duck are much-beloved today, it was not universally so in the past. Coach Harter especially disliked the moniker and insisted during his tenure that the team be called the “Kamikaze Kids” instead of the Ducks. The Kamikaze Kids were not named as such initially. The name came from the aftermath of their second game of their second season, on December 2, 1972, against Wichita State. Oregon was beginning to buy into Harter’s emphasis on defense and played the ball aggressively to boot. After the Shockers were trounced 92-72, Shockers coach Harry Miller declared “They play more aggressive than Kamikaze pilots did during World War II. I have never seen a basketball team go after you like that . . . that physical. This is just a fun article, especially for those of you who saw the Kamikaze Kids play... The way Texas A&M athletic director Ross Bjork sees it, his department is taking on a new role in helping athletes make money from name, image and likeness deals starting this month: matchmaker. Bjork and his staff won't serve as athletes' agents, but as of July 1, a new law taking effect in Texas clears the way for them to get more directly involved in pairing athletes with local companies or thick-walleted fans. The law also provides the Aggies and other schools in Texas with some new ways to encourage fans to open those wallets. The NCAA's national office believes parts of the new law in Texas step over that line. Texas is one of a handful of states, including Arkansas, Missouri and Oklahoma, among others, to pass laws in recent months that clash with the NCAA's stance in seeking to protect the ability of schools to get more involved. San Diego State remaining in Mountain West as Aztecs back off intention to withdraw from conference San Diego State plans to notify the Mountain West Conference that it's no longer intending withdraw from the league, sources confirmed to CBS Sports' Dennis Dodd. This decision is a sharp turnaround just weeks after the Aztecs had sent a letter to the conference outlining their intentions to depart the league while asking for an extension to give official notice. The Mountain West rejected the extension request, meaning June 30 was the last day the school could submit an official notice of withdrawal. How Oregon's 2024 class is shaping up by position Here's a rundown of who Oregon has landed at each position group and who a few more possible adds might be too. Oregon's 2024 class is far from complete, but already features 16 verbal commitments. That number is expected to rise in the next few weeks with a quartet of scheduled announcements that appear to be in their favor. The class is ranked eighth nationally and second among Pac-12 schools. This year's class could prove the best in program history. The Ducks seem to be in strong position for many of the top uncommitted prospects on the west coast and even several others nationally. Since the class is roughly two-thirds full right now, it's time to take stock in what all the Ducks are getting in 2024 and how that might impact the roster 14 months from now when the 2024 season kicks off. New team dethrones Ducks at top of Pac-12 recruiting rankings Recruiting is an incredibly fluid subject to cover in the world of college football. So when you take a look at updated recruiting rankings on any given afternoon, it’s important not to get too high or too low based on what you see — the rankings often flip and flop daily with new recruits announcing their commitments. The national rankings certainly flipped on Tuesday afternoon. While the Oregon Ducks have stood atop the Pac-12 recruiting rankings basically from the start of the 2024 cycle on, that changed after the USC Trojans picked up a couple of blue-chip commitments to bolster their class. Both 4-star S Marquis Gallegos and 4-star IOL Makai Saina joined Lincoln Riley and the Trojans, bumping USC ahead of the Ducks for the first time this year. Take a look at where everyone now stands in the national recruiting rankings: Oregon Recruiting: New team dethrones Ducks at top of Pac-12 rankings DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM There’s a new team on top in the Pac-12 recruiting rankings. 4-star WR Ryan Pellum announces commitment between Oregon and USC The recruiting battle between Lincoln Riley and Dan Lanning continues to go one since the two young head coaches took over at their respective schools a couple of years ago. This round went to the USC Trojans. On Monday afternoon, 4-star WR Ryan Pellum announced that he would be committing to the Trojans over the Oregon Ducks, which doesn’t come as a major surprise since the blue-chip pass-catcher canceled his official visit to Eugene not long after taking his OV to USC. A dozen options to replace Devan Cambridge on Ducks' roster for Dana Altman Over the weekend, the rather surprising news came out that former Arizona State Sun Devils guard Devan Cambridge — who had previously committed to transfer to the Oregon Ducks — would instead be transferring to Texas Tech to play the upcoming 2023-24 season. While Cambridge had verbally committed to play in Eugene, no paperwork had been signed, and he ultimately went back on that decision. Oregon Softball 2024 - Pitching Prognostication Stability in Circle Could Signal Next Step A year ago, Oregon’s pitching staff was in flux. The Ducks were coming off a season in which their likely #1 pitcher - Brooke Yanez - sat out the entire season and ultimately transferred to UCLA, and the team had relied on a Freshman - Stevie Hansen - to take up the slack. Makenna Kliethermes left in the portal and Jordan Dail graduated. Hansen, Raegen Breedlove and Allison Benning were the returners. Showing two can play the portal game, Oregon Coach Melyssa Lombardi reached out and brought UNC-Greensboro Ace Morgan Scott to Eugene. Coming into the 2024 season, Oregon’s pitching watchword is “stability.” Although a “senior” this past season (a designation that doesn’t mean what it used to, primarily due to the “free” Covid year all college athletes received for 2020), Scott is expected to return along with Hansen and Breedlove. Benning has transferred to North Florida. Those three players are likely to get most of the work in the circle next year barring a surprise portal addition or subtraction.
