Sophomore standout Tomuhini Topui is already one of the state's top lineman Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei sophomore Tomuhini Topui looks primed for a monster sophomore year. Topui is just a sophomore but already one of the best prospects on both sides of the line of scrimmage. He was a part time starter as a freshman at offensive guard and defensive tackle but will focus moving forward on the defensive line. We’ve seen him numerous times this off-season and he has been very impressive. He was the DL MVP at the SoCal National Preps Showcase back in May and we wrote the following evaluation of him after the event. “Topui could have easily won ‘Overall MVP’ honors as he was absolutely dominant on both sides of the line. He took reps at defensive tackle, nose guard and edge and then flipped over and took reps at offensive guard and offensive tackle. As dominant as he was on the defensive line, he was even more impressive on the offensive line and won most of his reps with the opposing DL not even getting past the line of scrimmage. “He’s about 6-foot-2, 330 pounds right now and told us he’s hoping to drop some weight and be closer to 315-320 by the fall season and we like that idea as well. He’s already very quick with a great get-off and that will only improve as he leans out a bit. He has grown man strength right now and just manhandles opposing players at the line of scrimmage.” Sophomore standout Tomuhini Topui is already one of the state's top lineman 247SPORTS.COM Santa Ana (Calif.) U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) and Cory Booker (D-N.J.) on Thursday circulated a discussion draft of federal legislation they say would protect college athletes’ economic, health and educational rights. The bill is called the College Athletes Protection & Compensation Act, and it would preempt state NIL laws. Moran said Thursday he believes this is the first bipartisan bill draft that could make it through a vote in the Senate. The bill proposes the formation of the College Athletics Corporation (CAC), a central oversight entity that would set, administer, and enforce rules and standards to protect athletes who enter into endorsement contracts. The CAC would establish rules and investigatory processes to enforce this law. There would be a 15-member board of directors that oversees the CAC, and at least five board members must be current or former college athletes. The CAC would have its own constitution and bylaws. It would also have subpoena power and could use it to compel deposition testimony on behalf of the NCAA if it has “appropriate requests.” The discussion draft includes, but is not limited to, the following... Commitment Preview: Nation's No. 1 LB Justin Williams Set to Announce College Decision Oregon's top linebacker target in the 2024 class is set to come off the board this week. Conroe (Tex.) Oak Ridge linebacker Justin Williams has seen a pretty significant rise on the recruiting trail since last season. The former safety turned backer had a strong junior year and has excelled on the camp circuit, leading him to a five-star (0.9952) rating on the 247Sports Composite and the title of No. 1 linebacker in the 2024 class. The No. 3 recruit in the Lone Star State is set to commit on Monday July 24 and will choose from a loaded top group featuring Oregon, Texas, Georgia and Alabama. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound backer took official visits to Oregon and Georgia this summer, but what are Oregon's chances heading into a decision? At various times the Ducks have surged for Williams. In fact, I've written multiple times that I believed they were in a position to land a commitment in the fall, but that never came to fruition. Williams has taken no less than five trips to Eugene during his recruitment, so there's clear mutual interest. Dan Lanning's chances with the coveted backer looked like they might surge even more when Oregon offered and recruited his teammate, Conroe (Tex.) Oak Ridge defensive lineman Joseph Jonah-Ajonye. The team practices and plays home games in a city park. The players, who do not receive athletic scholarships, have had to use a public restroom with no doors on the stalls. At times, they’ve driven hundreds of miles for games and stayed three or four to a room and had to share beds. This isn’t a ragtag club sport but rather the varsity women’s beach volleyball team for the Oregon Ducks, in an athletic department with more than $153 million in annual revenue and some of the best sports facilities in the country. The Oregonian/OregonLive interviewed more than a dozen former players and coaches, reviewed thousands of pages of public records and contacted experts in Title IX, the federal law that requires women and men be provided equitable opportunities to participate in sports. According to legal experts, Oregon’s treatment of the team puts it perilously close, if not over the line, into violation of Title IX. The Pac-12 has formed a committee to explore whether to stick with a nine-game schedule or shift to an eight-game slate for the league starting in 2024, commissioner George Kliavkoff tells 247Sports. The Pac-12 is exploring whether to shrink its conference schedule to eight games starting with the 2024 football season, commissioner George Kliavkoff told 247Sports Friday. The conference has formed a four-person committee of athletic directors to explore eight- and nine-game schedules. The committee is charged with preparing proposals, which are expected to be pitched to the 10-school membership by the end of the year. A decision should be finalized before January, Kliavkoff said. The Pac-12 currently plays a nine-game schedule. The conference eliminated divisions in 2022. Oregon confident in its ability to improve the pass rush in 2023 The 2022 Oregon Defense was not effective in getting to the quarterback and creating pressure. Oregon's 16 total sacks was the worst total the Ducks posted in a season since the 1986 campaign. Oregon's defense retooled and reloaded its unit to be much improved this coming fall. "I think we have better depth, better understanding of what we're trying to accomplish," said Oregon head football coach Dan Lanning at the Pac-12 Football Media Day event in Las Vegas. Oregon returns starting defensive linemen Brandon Dorlus and Casey Rogers from last year's unit, two impressive athletes that showed marked improvement from their 2021 football seasons. Holiday Bowl MVP Mase Funa also returns for a fifth year of college football to help provide leadership and production on the edge as yet another returning starter. Bo Nix dishes on Dan Lanning and Kenny Dillingham at Pac-12 media day In addition to Dan Lanning and Jeffery Bassa, Oregon Ducks QB Bo Nix took the stage for Pac-12 media day, on Friday afternoon. He answered the media’s questions about his relationships with other players and coaches, past and present, as well as questions about the upcoming season for the Oregon Ducks. Nix had some good insights into how the Ducks will fare in 2023, as well as how things have changed since last season. One of the things Dan Lanning brought up in his time with the media was the introduction of a new focus for the whole team this offseason of going from “good to great” as a program, which was an idea that was echoed by both Nix and Bassa in their time with the media. Below are Bo Nix’s most notable responses to questions from Pac-12 media day: Oregon Football: Notable Quotes from Bo Nix on Pac-12 media day DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM “He was one of the biggest reasons I came to Oregon to begin with.” Bo Nix on head coach Dan Lanning -

In 2023, the delegates from the Oregon Ducks’ party are head coach Dan Lanning, QB Bo Nix, and ILB Jeffery Bassa. As the Ducks look to this season, there are a few questions reverberating across the Oregon football community, such as concerns about the offense line, whether or not the defense is improved from last season, and whether or not the success of the Ducks in 2022 was a fluke or sign of the times. John Canzano just posted 12 one-on-one interviews he did at Media Day. I had previously just posted the ones of interest to Oregon. You can select to listen to coaches of other schools here. Pac-12 Media Day gave me the opportunity to sit down with every head football coach, two dozen of the conference’s top players and a handful of school administrators on Friday. My office was a cubicle on radio row where I conducted a series of revealing 1-on-1 interviews. UCLA’s Chip Kelly talked about the first time he saw De’Anthony Thomas. USC’s Lincoln Riley spoke about the impact of the late Mike Leach. And Oregon’s Dan Lanning talked football, family and movies. Bo Nix on what brought him back? Caleb Williams on his fingernails? And Utah’s Cam Rising on his injured knee? Here are 12 of the most intriguing, entertaining and enlightening listens — in no particular order — from the event: Canzano: Overheard at Pac-12 Media Day WWW.JOHNCANZANO.COM A dozen 1-on-1 interviews. -

Oregon Ducks AD Rob Mullens ‘more confident than ever’ in Pac-12′s pursuit of new media rights deal Consider the Oregon Ducks committed to the Pac-12′s future. Amid a year of uncertainty and rumor for the conference, which is losing UCLA and USC to the Big Ten on Aug. 2, 2024 and been in ongoing negotiations for a new media rights deal for the last 13 months, the Pac-12 projected a stance of solidarity during its annual football media day. Mullens said it remains Oregon’s best option to stay in the Pac-12 going forward because of traditional rivalries, recruiting footprint, alumni footprint and a postseason opportunities. Dan Lanning 'really excited' by team's new talent at linebacker Dan Lanning exhibited confidence about this year's revamped linebacker corps at Friday's Pac-12 Media Day in Las Vegas. Oregon's linebacker room has nearly undergone a complete overhaul this offseason. Jeffrey Bassa represents the only returning contributor, while redshirt Devon Jackson is the only other scholarship player back. Dan Lanning was intentional with how he went about filling out that room. The team added a pair of transfers (Jestin Jacobs and Connor Soelle), moved a safety (Jamal Hill) to linebacker and signed one prep backer (Jerry Mixon) too. None of those players resemble the broadly-built thumpers like Noah Sewell and Jackson LaDuke from a year ago. Instead the new additions will attempt to infuse more speed, athleticism and coverage ability to a position that has not-so gradually shifted in recent years. Talented RB Karson Cox lands dream offer from Oregon Hesperia (Calif.) Oak Hills junior running back Karson Cox picked up a dream offer earlier today. Cox is one of the top backs out West, regardless of class. He’s a two way player at the HS level but we like him on the offensive side of the ball in college. He really came on as a sophomore and finished the year with 1,215 yards and 18 touchdowns while averaging nearly 10 yards a carry. He had six catches for 150 yards and two more scores out of the backfield and has a nice combination of size, speed and power. On the recruiting front, Cox holds scholarship offers from Arizona, Arizona State, BYU, SMU, UNLV, Washington and Washington State and you can now add the Oregon Ducks to that list. “Oregon is one of my dream schools growing up so I’m very excited about this one,” Cox said. “I really wasn’t expecting it so it was a pleasant surprise this morning for sure. Oregon QB Bo Nix on transfer portal, NIL topics: 'I really take pride in what I've had the opportunity to do' Before Oregon's representatives took the stage at Pac-12 Media Day, quarterback Bo Nix joined ESPN's Sportscenter for a 15-minute interview. Throughout the interview, Nix was asked his opinion, as a transfer quarterback and someone who benefits from NIL, what he thinks of the topics as a whole, and Kiffin's comments. "Being a graduate transfer really set my career up for success," said Nix. "And I was able to choose a place like Oregon and go and be a fit to them and be that extra piece that they were needing for their puzzle. I think NIL because there are so many people that have done it before me, I really take pride in what I've had the opportunity to do. Being a quarterback, not only at Auburn but at Oregon, is a valuable thing. It really is nothing to be taken for granted. It's a blessing to be a part of. Pac-12 preseason media poll offers bulletin board material for Dan Lanning's Ducks Bulletin board material? I wouldn’t be shocked. Of course, with as much talent as there is in the conference — USC, Washington, Utah, and Oregon State are all ranked in the top 25 going into the year — it would be understandable for any team to stumble a couple of times throughout the fall. However, Duck fans have high expectations for this team considering the depth of talent on the roster. Here’s a look at how the full Pac-12 preseason media poll projects the final standings will look like this year out west: Oregon Football: Ducks in line for frustrating season per media poll DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM The preseason Pac-12 media poll was released on Thursday. Canzano: Pac-12 shouldn't feed trolls at media day It was just a year ago that George Kliavkoff absorbed the heat of the spotlight at Pac-12 Conference Football Media Day. The commissioner made an opening statement, then fielded questions while trying to get his feet underneath him. "With respect to the Big 12 being open for business, I appreciate that," Kliavkoff quipped. "We haven't decided if we're going shopping there yet or not." Kliavkoff later told me that his frustration stemmed from 29 days spent watching grenades get launched from "every corner of the Big 12." He was weary with the disinformation campaign and annoyed at what many believed to be an orchestrated attempt to erode the Pac-12's brand. "I understand why they're doing it," Kliavkoff told me, "when you look at the relative media value between the two conferences. I get it, I get why they're scared, why they're trying to destabilize it. I was just tired of that." What will the Pac-12 commissioner's tone be on Friday in Las Vegas? What will Kliavkoff say about the Big 12, if anything, after a year of chronic subterfuge?
