We're stuck in college football television hell. On-field performance and tradition don't matter nearly as much as the television footprint of your team. It's a network war and universities are going to be the casualties. Reports Suggest Oregon, Washington Unlikely to Join Big Ten
NJDuck replied to Triphibius's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
As much as I am not happy with the situation with the conference, if we are looking at MW schools (groan), SJSU. Student enrollment around 36,000. The media market is in the San Jose/San Francisco/Oakland area as we all know ranked 6. Fresno media market is 54. UNLV, tier 1 research university, media market ranked 40, enrollment of 30,000. Again, not sure what is best, join Big 12 or loosely contract with ACC? I know we all would prefer the BIG or SEC. I was so hoping Oregon with Phil Knight's help would be able to pull off Oregon's entry into the BIG, but from what Jon Wilner's sources are saying, it doesn't look like it will be happening. I agree as well, Oregon should get a bigger cut of the pie if we are to keep the conference together. -
Welcome McDawg! Since you asked, did a little research and put together a bit of history surrounding our mascot. "Oregon teams were originally known as Webfoots started around the 1890s. Ducks, with their webbed feet, began to be associated with Oregon's teams in the 1920s, and live duck mascots were adopted to represent the team. White duck named "Puddles" began to appear at sports events." "Beginning in 1940, cartoon drawings of Puddles in student publications began to resemble Donald Duck, and by 1947, Walt Disney was aware of the issue. Oregon athletic director, Leo Harris capitalized on his friendship with Disney cartoonist Mike Royer, met Disney and reached an informal handshake agreement that granted Oregon permission to use Donald as its sports mascot, naming him Donald Duck." "Disney lawyers later questioned the agreement in the 1970s. but Oregon produced a photo showing Harris and Disney wearing matching jackets with an Oregon Donald logo. Relying on the photo as evidence of Disney's wishes, in 1973, both parties signed a formal agreement granting the university the right to use Donald's likeness as a symbol for (restricted to) Oregon sports." Photo below shows Leo Harris (left center) and Walt Disney (far right). "In 2010, Disney and the university reached an agreement that removed the costumed Oregon Duck mascot from its association with the Donald trademark, and allowed the "Duck" to make more public appearances (not restricted to certain sporting events)." "The mascot in graphic art, which is more similar to Donald Duck than the rounder head and body of the costume, is still covered by the trademark agreement." "In 1978, a student cartoonist came up with a new duck image called Mandrake, but students chose Donald (Duck) as the official mascot by 2-to-1 margin." Thank goodness! Mandrake (or RoboDuck) was not a good fit. Our mascot the Duck, through the years, has become one of the better known mascots in College Sports.

The New Overlords of College Football
NJDuck replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
If that happens If that happens, at what point should Oregon and Washington push to be given full members payment? Not right to put that on Oregon and Washington when, what you said, certain members of the BIG 10 are a drain. Oregon and Washington makes money for the BIG while other members don't. I can see where they would want to drop the dead weight. Nasty business. Maybe BIG 10 and FOX looks to bring in more streaming partners to rake in more money. -
Pac-12 Eyeing "Loose Partnership" with ACC
NJDuck replied to OregonDucks's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Agree! Other than #1, really would love to see option #4 happen. -
Let's face it, the schools in the MW conference are not going to cut it as far as a new PAC goes in media market value. SDS in the San Diego area media market value sits at 28. UNLV, Las Vegas market value sits at 40. I still believe getting into the Big 10 or SEC is the best scenario for Oregon. Hopefully with Knight's influence could make it happen. If not the Big 10 or SEC, it's better to combine with the Big 12. Not sure what George has in mind that will make the PAC relevant. But like OregonDucks said, it would be interesting to see what he comes up with.

According to Canzano Phil Knight apparently wants Oregon to be part of the Big Ten Conference. Or even the SEC. Both options are currently being explored by the Ducks with Knight's backing. Another would be Oregon assuming a tentpole position in a blended, ESPN-backed version of the Pac 12 and Big 12. So it seems all 3 options are still on the table as possible plans they are exploring. Canzano: Oregon Ducks make a wish list, while Pac-12 rallies behind scenes WWW.JOHNCANZANO.COM Ducks covet Big Ten or SEC invite.

Conference Confusion: Have You Arrived at THIS?
NJDuck replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Let's hope the politicians stay out of it. We've already have suffered enough. -
Praising USC for this great move, unbelievable. Well, let's praise them for making the PAC-12 carried their's and UCLA's dead carcasses around for many years. Let's praise USC for bringing down the PAC-12's perception for many years because they sucked in sports. Let's praise them for giving the BIG PAC12's biggest media market. Yes, let's praise them for helping destroy the PAC-12. Let's also praise them for helping destroy the tradition rich Rose bowl, the Grand Daddy of them ALL The issue is UCLA was their equal in competitiveness, they were both more in the middle of the PAC, not the top.

Brett Yormark is a great get for the conference as commissioner! You need someone like him who has this kind of experience and creativeness to broker a new media rights deal that can get the conference the most money as possible for the universities. I am looking forward for your conference to be very successful and vital in light of what is happening. You will also have the Denver market (ranked 17) with Colorado and Salt Lake City (as you mentioned) with Utah as well with BYU. Great rivalry between Utah and BYU! Not sure what is happening with Washington (great rivalry with our Ducks) or with Stanford and CAL. Stanford and CAL of course in the Bay area which ranks 6. At this moment we are all in the dark as far as where our Beloved Ducks will land. We are trusting Oregon will make the right decision moving forward.

OK, Let's Slow Down and Think This Through...
NJDuck replied to Duck Fan 76's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I know I posted this on a different thread on here, but worth reading from Dan Wetzel at Yahoo Sports. The way things are trending and what is happening in conference realignment, He stated the other conference could be relegated to group of 5 status when it comes to the playoffs. Whether he is right or not, it's concerning. Maybe a PAC/Big12 combo, it all depends where Oregon and Washington lands, could change what he is saying. I have to say it would be great if the ACC/PAC/Big12 could combine with the best schools in each conference would make a third super conference with clout. But, to make that happen would be very difficult to accomplish if at all. Pac-12, ACC had chance to save themselves. Instead, it was an all-time botch job. SPORTS.YAHOO.COM Just like that the Pac-12 and ACC moved closer to the AAC and Mountain West than the Big Ten and SEC. And they can't blame anybody but themselves. -
Ideally if you could somehow combine PAC/Big12/ACC (38 universities plus ND) into one mega conference. Sacrifices would have to be made as to which universities would be allowed in this newly formed super conference. With the right universities and media markets spanning across a lot of regions could bring in a great media revenue contract. If you kept all, you would need $1.95 billion in order for each university to receive 50 million. If you kept 22 schools you would need $1.1 billion. Not sure how logistically you would schedule 39 universities (if ND stayed where they are). That would need to be figured out in splitting into pods. It could be a very exciting and competitive conference, not only in Football and basketball, but all other sports. But the reality is it would be very difficult, maybe impossible, for three conferences to come to an agreement to make it happen. I am sure the ACC understands they could be next in jeopardy.

Let's hope Oregon got Phil Knight involved to advise them through this process. He's not one to crack under pressure. At this point this is a business transaction and what's best for Oregon moving forward. -
Amazon could also be a great streaming service as well.
