Great article Charles. Sharing a little personal insight here. I had a chance to meet Dan and observe him in a social setting and also on the practice field. He has the 'it' factor. He worked the room like a pro. I actually stood back and watched him and he was superb. Comparing that to his predecessor who I also observed at a social event, he had to be escorted around the room by AD staff. He lacked social skills quite honestly. What you saw in his (MC) interactions with the press where exactly the same when he was in a room of donors. 'Nuff' said there. Dan has a great sense of humor and he spoke very candidly about his wife's battle with cancer and how that shaped him. He is authentic and real. I like how he owns things when they don't go right. That is called humility. He'll get tested in lots of ways, that's the nature of coaching and life in general but I truly believe he'll handle it and own it.

The other thing that drove me nuts about Mario was his thing of only playing the Jrs and Srs even if they were not the best players. I like Dan's 'if you're good enough, you're old enough' mantra.

Totally agree. Dan is intense for sure and I like his 'main thing' emphasis. Some of the media peeps try so hard to get him to say stuff that will seem like a 'big scoop' and he just plays it very cool. He's pretty astute with the media.

I thought he was very average. No Q factor is a good way of putting it. He also said something that was odd, after one play on the TT sideline, Dorlus waved and at first glance it could have appeared like he was being disrespectful, but he was waving to DeRutyer and Marcel Yates who as we know both coached at UO so it was not a snarky thing. When I saw it happen my first thought was 'oh no they're going to flag him for that'. Helfrich jumped on it and said something like 'oh that is not what you want to do'. Mark seemed to forget about the connection to UO there. I like Mark, he was just never head coach/CEO material.

Nevada- I totally agree with you but once you've lost Finebaum it's pretty tough. Also there's that whole pesky issue of how Colorado is going to pay Deion. They are not rolling in cash (yes, this new found superiority will help them raise money). They said when they hired him they did not have the money but they were going to swing for the fences anyway. Will it pay off? Time will tell.

Agree and one of the reasons I like coming here. There was so much hyperbole and firing of coaches on other message boards Saturday night that it was ridiculous. One person even went so far as to say Mullens should rescind the new contract DL just got. Yes, you read that right. I get that we all get caught up in the moment but sometimes Oregon fans give Oregon fans a bad name.
