Solar No. 2 Share Posted September 1 (edited) I guess this is as good as any place to post my take. Grab a cup of Joe. Let's start high level: - 3 point game against an FCS team in the 4th quarter. No major bad luck required. We were straight up outplayed for stretches of the game. - Does anybody really think we would have done any better than 3-45 against Georgia in Atlanta yesterday? Because that's where this team is at. Let's move to the things that can be fixed: - Not playing inspired football. One would think they will find better intensity against other teams. - Cleaning up procedural penalties - Bedford getting healthy - Transfers getting better with the playbook Let's move to the things that can't or won't be fixed: -Gabriel can't magically fast forward to his second year in the system though -Final season QB immobilization: Mariota, Herbert, Nix, Gabriel. NFL in sight, running the ball is no longer allowed. Thought by the QB spoken into existence by the coaches, schemed out of the playbook by the OC. Not even a hint of an option run game. Every running play will be 10 on 11 and the defense knows it. -Gabriel's pocket presence will be more Mariota than Nix. That isn't something coachable based on what I've ever seen -A team curated for the big 10, to be Rhinos. GPS readings above 20mph across the board with agility no where in sight due to massive weight. As they say factually in car racing, a 3000 lb car with 300 HP is not the same as a 2000 lb car with 200 HP. Simple physics about momentum. Does anyone really think Tez could do his thing at 200lbs? It's not the speed, its not even the acceleration, it's the rate of change in acceleration, the suddenness, the 2nd derivative for those who paid attention in calculus. That's what allows you to evade tacklers and blockers and get and stay in front of opponents you are trying to block. Impossible against FCS size dudes at our weight -Will Stein's playbook. We are in the season. Any drastic changes can't happen. We are stuck with a playbook that relies on agile blocking and defenses that are slow to react. Santa Rosa Duck No. 3 Share Posted September 1 It seemed to me that this team was especially unprepared for the first game of the season. Could it be the result of the Transfer Portal bringing in so many new faces that have not actually melded together properly yet? I honestly don't know but sure did not expect a 4th quarter nail biter. GO DUCKS!
HappyToBeADuck No. 4 Share Posted September 1 Well each of us on this awesome Forum will have their different opinions, viewpoints and feelings about yesterdays game. Thats what makes this a special forum....... I do not wish to offend any poster or forum member, however I do not share the sky is falling or this is the end of the world for OBD's. I agree with Jordan that there is plenty to Quack about in our 24-14 win. Let's see how the game stat numbers played out! Defense: Last season Idaho averaged 33+ points per game. Against the Ducks they got 14. In 2023 Idaho averaged 169 yards rushing. Yesterday they got 49. In 2023 the Vandals averaged about 260 yards passing. Yesterday they got 168. The Vandals averaged 32+ minutes of time of possession in 2023. They had the ball yesterday for 20:45 Duck D got 4 sacks and 2 picks. Duck D surrendered only 10 first downs. Well done Duck D.......... Offense: First Downs: 31 Time of Possession: 39:15 Total Yards: 487 Pass Completions: 41-49 Passing Yards: 380 Rushing Yards: 109 The rushing yards were light. Keep in mind the Vandals returned all 4 of their D Line starters and were committed to stopping the run. Well done Vandals The Vandal coaching staff recognized they could disrupt the Duck O line with pressure, movement and blitzes. This may explain the false starts that occurred on 3rd downs that ended drives during the game. To me the numbers show the Ducks dominated on both sides of the ball. The Duck offense simply failed to execute at critical moments in this game. The final score reflects that. The Ducks did not dominate the last 4 minutes of the first half and the first 4 of the second half. However, the Duck offense went down the field and scored a breathing room touchdown. Well done. The lack of in game reps together by the O-Line allowed for mistakes in critical moments. When Bedford got injured, DL and staff had to triage a walk on center in the last 2 weeks. No bad snaps.... Positions changed and the continuity was not there alomg the O Line. The Vandals capitalized on that in key moments. IMHO, Bedford will be back. DL and staff will work on those mistakes. Then the Sun will be back in the sky, the stars will align and OBD's offense will roll up the points. This team has substance and week 2 will look different. If it doesnt then we can get worried. 2 1 1 1

A great take. It's just a matter of expectations. We have a really good team that should improve a bunch over the next 4 -6 games like in 2022. We just have some fundamental shortcomings that would make us lose to Ohio State and Georgia every time. But we will be a good team that finishes with a winning record and a trip to a decent bowl game. As I like to say: "Gratefulness is the art of lowering your expectations."
Dave23 No. 6 Share Posted September 1 One of Idaho's TDs was on a trick play from the 37 yard line because we decided it would be a good idea to go for it on 4th and inches in our own territory. Reed bit hard on the fake leaving his guy with a clear path to the end zone. I know there's been a few times that fake punts and 4th and inches deep in our own territory has work but it's also cost us the game a few times. DL should reassess the strategy and see if it's really worth the 50/50 shot and the momentum swing that this brings. If he want to get aggressive throw the ball down the field rather then throwing the ball short of the sticks on third down.

Jon Joseph Moderator No. 8 Share Posted September 1 B1G's Saturday Tradition Take on Saturday's Game. 3 takeaways from Oregon’s uncomfortable win over Idaho to open 2024 SATURDAYTRADITION.COM Oregon won its opener. There were no surprises there. But it never felt smooth against the Idaho Vandals. Nothing new, but a good objective view of the game including noting that a walk-on started at center. No matter the health of other O-line guys vs Boise, Poncho best be playing center, the QB of the O-line. Starting a back-up at O-line shows a lack of depth at the position. Haywarduck Moderator No. 9 Share Posted September 1 That was the old Oregon program playing a wily game against a BIG team. There was the Oregon recruit at qb, and smaller faster lineman. An under rated team with a fighters chance. Fortunately, like many times back when I went to Oregon, the bigger more talented team came out on top. I'll go back to what I said about how we should look at this game. Idaho isn't a bad team, but we got out coached. I would put this squarely on the coaches, and Lanning has to do better than that. He has all the talent, time to show he knows how to thump teams like Idaho. Like Georgia did in his first head coaching experience. This game proved Lanning has plenty of learning to do going forward. He is still our guy, but let's not anoint him all knowing just yet.

Thats what makes this a special forum....... Well said Happy2B, the sky is not falling. OBD had more than 3 times as many first downs, as well as more than twice as many total yards, passing yards and rushing yards. Technically, we were not out played. While they gave us a scare, especially in the 4th quarter, the game was not as close as the score indicated. We hurt ourselves with some ill-timed penalties (8 for 70 yards), but it was the timing that hurt more than the yardage. DG connected on 83% of his passes, hitting 41 of 49 for 380 yards and 2 TDs. With an O-line that seemed to struggle all day. As several have said, it feels like this team bought into the hype, and expected to cruise. Lanning and company can use this as a teachable moment, address some of these issues, and give Boise State a glimpse of who OBD can be. 1

The percentage of success on those 4th down plays are low for a reason, and Dan has to learn the hard way. The last two years weren't enough yet. The good news? This is an outstanding defense that will keep us in games until the offense comes alive. Look at that line above....Did You EVER Think We Would See It? HDuck No. 14 Share Posted September 1 Here are 3 games at random. 70-30 - WSU over Portland St - 352 passing, 224 rushing - no sacks allowed 41-17 - Miami over Florida - 385 passing, 144 rushing - 1 sack allowed 24-14 - Oregon over Idaho - 380 passing, 107 rushing - 3 sacks allowed What's my point? Similar passing yds, but much dissimilar apparently in O-line play which couldn't generate a consistent running game and allowed 3 sacks. When your QB is quickly recognizing where he can dump the ball, completes 41 of 49, but gets little comfort from his O-line there is a big problem that needs to be fixed quickly. DuckFan93 No. 15 Share Posted September 1 Yes, our O-Line was the weakest link, but I think our QB play could have been better if he had been willing to move to get yardage. There were many plays where the field in front of him was wide open and yet he chose to throw a check down. Even the TV announcer said it. DG is supposed to be a mobile QB, but didn't show much of it yesterday. This will have to change starting next week against a much tougher potato, or we are done. DG is a mobile QB but putting him in harms way against an opponent like Idaho generally ends up being a bad decision. Pretty much every running QB we've ever had has been knocked out by desperate QB run plays. If Gabriel has to run to beat a FCS team then manny things are very wrong with this team. 1
Solar No. 17 Share Posted September 1 I thought Gabriel threw the ball really accurately. He just wasn't able to get comfortable. Certainly at one point it felt like we were one bad decision away from losing the game to an inferior opponent, not a fun place to be as a QB. Manning started instead of Alexander on the other side. There were some other interesting starts, like Tyler Turner, and Boecher. This is something we've seen DL do before, start the season with what are presumably most deserving (hardest practicing) players, then move on to the best players. Sometimes it could be the best players are out of the portal and still getting up to speed.

Agree 100% that we wouldn't want him hurt, but I was talking about easy runs. Potato defense was effective because they figured out that DG wouldn't run. That's a major weakness our next potato opponent will no doubt exploit even more. That said, despite the disappointing outcome, I am very glad that we won without any major injuries. Unlike the opponents which were dropping like flies every few minutes. So may DL did work our guys a bit hard, but it did pay off in that regard.
