FishDuck Article Administrator No. 1 Share Posted November 12 Growing up in Eugene in the 1980s-90s, I never got into hockey. There were no youth hockey leagues to play in, and if there had been, I would not have played, as football, basketball, baseball, volleyball and soccer occupied my youth. Mr. FishDuck took time from his fun at Memo casino to agree that he was never into hockey as ... 30Duck No. 2 Share Posted November 12 Thanks, Darren, 14 divided by 7 is as deep into math as I want to get into either. At first, I couldn't understand what was happening either. The Ducks playing in the 3rd quarter were the same that were playing in the 1st and 2md. Why the drop off in production? The answer came through discussion, here in the "forum with decorum". It was a plan. It is "prevent offense" with a purpose. The Ducks were never in danger of losing to Maryland, or the others, when the scoring went into hibernation. This is going to be a season longer than any other. There is no reason to keep the assault going, show more of the playbook, add carries to the running backs in games that are already in the win column and the playoff is coming. Haywarduck Moderator No. 3 Share Posted November 12 While I am a water enthusiast, hockey and ice aren't in my skillset, nor real expertise. I actually knew little about hockey until I married into a hockey crazed family. I was then amazed that they substitute all the time. Players seldom stay on the ice for long at all. They have different lines that are constantly switching in an out. Players of hockey can't maintain the intensity needed to play extended minutes, who knew. Maybe our Ducks, the starting group, can't come out with the intensity needed in the 3rd quarter? If the starting group can only muster 2 points, on average, in the 3rd quarter, let's put in the second string skill players. This would be the perfect time for this group to have the full playbook. Our backup qb, potentially next years starter, would be only tasked to increase our scoring by 50%. For those mathematically challenged, that is only 3 points. We could then have the starters come in and finish off the game in the 4th quarter. I think this could be another brilliant move by Lanning. Increase scoring, give the backups some real experience and what could go wrong, we only average 2 points like the starters? 1

Saw it in the theatre, oh my goodness what a flop. Never watched it since. The scene I liked was the guy who lived by himself in the dark on a little raft inside the "belly" of the oil freighter, and his sole purpose in life was to check the oil level. Oh, and drinking your own pee. I wouldn't be good at any of that. Go figure.

I think it could be a risk.

HappyToBeADuck No. 9 Share Posted November 12 Darren thank you for that deep dive into the puzzling third quarter woes of OBD,s. For this Duck fan, I am more excited that our violent Duck Defense has only surrendered 30 3rd quarter points for an average of 3 points The Defense has made certain that OBD's did not lose control of the games. DL knows that the offense does not play to its potential in the 3rd quarter. Even if the substitution level is high. Go Ducks....whoop on the Badgers and clinch that spot in the BIG CCG..... 1 1
Jon Joseph Moderator No. 10 Share Posted November 12 Nice article, eh? But only Hosers play Volleyball, no fights, no penalty box, chiclets intact, and a ball bigger than Rhode Island instead of manning it up and strapping on sharpened blades. And the gals who aim at a tiny net instead of bouncing the big ball over a net the size of Alaska, aren't Rinky-dinky either, eh? It's too bad you grew up in a tropical paradise like Eugene, and missed out on the Game of Cement-Heads, eh? If the real game of ice hockey was four periods long, the games would last one hour and twenty minutes (I'm good at math, eh? ) and the Zamboni (that's a machine not a sub sandwich) would run out of gas, eh? Was it the Miracle on a Volleyball Court or the Miracle on Ice, eh? SERIOUSLY, another terrific and fun read. I think there could be some rope-a-dope going on here. Dan knows how important the Middle 8, 4 minutes before the 2nd half and 4the first 4 minutes of the 3rd quarter, are in a football game. He also knows this will be the longest CFB season ever and that he is playing in a conference where most teams are not built to come back from a two-score deficit. In a conference with fewer possessions on offense and with clock rules that have shortened the game. Puddles, we're not in the Pac-12 anymore. In its 8 wins, Ohio State has given up 64 points. Against Ohio State, OBD put up 32 points. And in your excellent article, you noted that OBD did not play Portland State, instead swapping the Vikings for a top FCS program in Idaho and a 3-point grind it out, thank you special teams, win over Boise has turned out to be a good win. Against Ohio State, Oregon unleashed what Charles refers to as 'Bird Bombs' against a highly touted group of DBs to great effect. OBD lost the 1st Q 6-7 and the 3rd Q 0-7 validating your point. But this came against a team that surrendered no TDs in the last two games against ranked Penn State and bottom feeder Purdue. I am hoping that OBD will have all hands-on deck for the possible deep run in the playoff. However, I think we will see the same strategy if OBD gets the lead of burning time off the clock instead of trying to light up the scoreboard. Thanks again, great take. I'm off to pound down a Molson's, eh. 2

Yup, the D is terrific, minus penalties, but we'll take it. I just worry that in games where the Ducks need offense from start to finish if they'll be able to do it. Bad habits can be hard to break.
CalBear95 No. 13 Share Posted November 12 “Hockey does have its moments” Hockey is, IMHO, the greatest sport on Earth. And absolutely nothing can touch the Stanley Cup Playoff. If you want to ‘get’ hockey, watch the post season (or go to a game in Canada). No disrespect to football. I love football. But there is no feat as impressive as winning Lord Stanley’s Cup. There just isn’t. Winning 4 best-of-7 high intensity series with little to no rest between games and series in a highly physical sport is just nuts. It’s a contest of both skills, grace and endurance. There is no other post season like it.

I remember hitting kids in the face and tubby kids in the gut. The sound of the ball hitting the flab "splat" was addicting to me. It was great.... and violent!!!! ; ) In the championship match I served 15 straight points to close it out and take the home the blue ribbon. Ya didn't mess with Darren "Pistol" Perkins on the volleyball court back then. lol Agree, I get the strategy part of it, but I just hope we can turn on the 3rd quarter gas when needed, and will at some point.

mikethehiker No. 16 Share Posted November 12 I liked our third quarter approach this Saturday. Coaches are aware of the 3rd quarter malaise and decided to spice things up calling three creative and improbable plays. OBD have been fantastic this season and DL took a lethargic moment towards the end of a 8 game grind to accomplish two things: 1) reward the team by rewarding players with unique opportunities in the middle of a game 2) give future opponents more film to study and waste more time in practice covering all the "just in case" scenarios 2

PittDuck No. 19 Share Posted November 12 (edited) I remember going to a fight at the Memorial Colosseum one night and a hockey game broke out! Portland and Kamloops I believe it was. The refs never even tried to break up or stop any of the fights. I think there were 6 fights total. Player 1, throw down gloves Player 2, throw down gloves Player 1, throw down helmet… Player 2, throw down helmet… Both players, proceed to beat on opponent while the refs watch! Great game!
