What Is Mad Man Dan Cooking Up Next?

Recommended Posts

Dan Lanning has put together an undefeated season so far at 11-0 and the Ducks are effectively a lock for the College Football Playoff, though their seeding has yet to be determined. He has done this through brilliant recruiting, player development and being just a bit mad in the process. Mr. FishDuck took a break from his fun at 5 ...

David, thanks for giving us a great spread of Mad Dan to start the morning! Contrasting it with the bland offerings on Dull Day's table makes it perfect. Because it was executed against osu2 the onside kick is my favorite, but all of them are delicious!

Now crazy Chef Dan has us licking our lips waiting for what tantalizing treat awaits the pups from up north?

Maybe there is a rule in the coaches meetings where if a coach says 'what if', everyone has to lean in and hear him out. I mean some of these ideas has to be stuff most programs would just start shaking their heads and they would send the coach on their way.

What if we kick the ball at the player full speed, are you nuts, nobody does that. Maybe we put 12 guys on the field on purpose, come on, we are trying to lower are penalties, stop coming up with this stupid stuff!

Hear me out, what if we hike the ball to the DE on a punt, ok stop right now! I think a backup O-lineman might be the best option on a pass play, drug test this guy and get him out of here!

On a punt if we only line up the center maybe they will line up somebody on him and get a penalty, now you're just plain nuts, escort this guy out, now! No I am serious and we could have the holder take the ball and run it, it would work, sorry your just in the wrong program, maybe try getting a job at Oregon.

I would seriously love to be in the room when some of this stuff is brought up. First we have 'so what, now what' for the players. Now we have 'what if, keep going, hear him out,' for the coaches?

I think this is just another iteration of the Nike spirit. I mean, 'what if we use this waffle iron to make the sole of the shoe,' who does that! Mad man Dan is just channeling the original Mad man Bill Bowerman. If he is half as successful then all will be good.

Great article and I think Mad Man Dan could only be who he is at Oregon, where innovation and thinking outside the box is the force that drives the program, once again!

I believe another reason Coach Lanning is practicing and using “trick plays” is to keep the players excited and engaged during a LONG season.

As you pointed out, he’s getting defensive and offensive lineman involved in these plays and, if you watch the players on the sideline, they are jumping up and down watching their teammates get the opportunity to get the ball and make a play. It’s an another way to break up the monotony of a long season.

Hopefully, he has stopped cooking up steaks on his stove and has used some of his hard earned money to purchase a proper grill.

Can someone please get him a good cast iron pan for filet mignon?

It would be funny to arrange Chef Ramsay to show up at the Lanning house, with TV cameras, while Coach Lanning is preparing his steak.

Excellent article David, thank you on Thanksgiving!

I must say I have been wondering if Mad Man Dan would lean into his riverboat gambler side and let osu2 sneak out of the B1G CG with a close win in order to let his guys play one more at Autzen?

There are positives to both choices, and I imagine MMDL and his staff have given is more than a passing thought.

Either way, Go Ducks, destroy the dawgs!

And don't underestimate the power of the potential trick play in the minds of opposing coaches and players even if one isn't called. Leave them slightly nervous all the time.

I LOVE this nickname David...."Mad-Man Dan"....just love it!

Oregon head coach Dan Lanning doesn't care about being the No. 1 team in the country

This article was already pushing the word limit for what makes an acceptable article length...

So I left out the "fake knee" against Wisconsin where they took a knee formation and did a direct snap to James. This almost worked.

Against Ohio State Lanning also used a swinging gate formation which moved the entire offensive line, minus the center, to the left of the center and detached. The play failed but Gabriel had Holden wide open down he middle for a touchdown if he got the ball there.

There were some others but it would take looking back at the film. These are just the ones on the top of my head.

And of course there were others in previous years.

Great article.

I am remembering in Lanning's first year (I think), that in a press conference he answered a question about his own self-education and what he does to better his football IQ.

One of the things he said is that any time he hears of a trick play being called anywhere - college or high school - that he gets film of it to study it.

What a great idea!

What a great idea!

I also think he sits down and thumbs through the rulebook on a regular basis.

He is definitely experimenting on the field. Not everything works but even the best designed play doesn't work 100% of the time.

Excited to see what else he has for us this year.
