So...Indiana Didn't Belong, but Tennessee DID?

Recommended Posts

Funny how that narrative goes on ESPN, talking on-and-on about not only the Hoosiers weaknesses, and how they did not belong...but to even suggest that the B1G is no different than the ACC or Big-12?

So how did the ACC do yesterday?

I was disappointed that Indiana kept trying to run the ball when it was evident that ND was stronger in the trenches. Their QB was accurate, and they scored two TDs in the last five minutes; imagine if they had built a game plan on what they are good at from early in the game?

And then the 'Vols come along with all the hype, and we saw NONE of what was claimed.  Did they belong?

PHOTOS: Ohio State defeats Tennessee in CFP first round

Actually, I believe they ALL belonged and deserved their chance. You never know on a given day, although the higher seeded teams won easily at home...as they should in a correctly seeded bracket.

I like Jon Joseph's idea and have the entire Playoffs at the home field of the higher seeded teams all the way until the final, of which is at a moving neutral location, like the NFL does with the Super Bowl.

Make it 14 teams with the top two sitting out the first round, or make it 16 with no conference championships and we start it earlier.

And I hope the winner of the Oregon-Ohio State game wins the 'Natty and shuts those ESPN pie-holes up.

I don't believe it's accurate to declare a team didn't belong after the games, and with an expanded bracket and the "deserving" aspect carrying as much weight there will be mismatches. The remaining rounds should be more competitive.

What is evident this year is that we don't need a playoff... Or at least not this big a field.

Oregon v Georgia for the National Championship go!

Oregon beat Ohio State and Penn State and won the B1G. Georgia beat Texas (twice) and Tennessee.

I guess ND would be left out and we'll see if they belong.

But right now it feels like we know who should play in the championship based off the season. The playoff gives a shot to the season's losers which I supposed is fine. As long as the Ducks win it all.

Those honks will never stop sharing their favoritism SEC style.

i expect the winner of the Rose Bowl to dispatch Texas (SEC)and PSU to beat The Real Dawgs (SEC) and have an all BIG final.

I love Georgia and our great Bulldog posters. However, PSU has the talent and offense to sneak out a win if tbey face Georgia.

Even if OBD's, osu2 and PSU were to win the Natty, you can bet money that ESPN and all the honks will be saying.....

If Alabama had not been robbed of her rightful spot, well the outcome would have been different.

Charles it will never stop.....

The playoffs are 4 teams too many. Possibly 6 teams too many. I truly hate the pundits that chirp about 3 loss teams deserving to be in and then not a word when they were decimated. Vols got 'smoked'. Why? Because it just means more....to the B1G. As for Joe'ja, I don't think they get past ND. Texas will fall to Oregon. It will be an SEC'less Natty. 3 SEC teams entered and 2 mediocre teams are left. Yep, I said it. Again, top of the line players but mediocre teams.

Now, let me really go on a rant. If you think we had mediocre football in the first round, what do you think will happen when 4 more teams are added? Gonna put in a 4 loss team? Really? I want to hurl. #1 VS #16? Why? Yep, its all about money and always has been and always will be. I truly wish these guys would stop with the 'we need to see better football' mantra as they are bellowing for a 16 team playoff that screams mediocrity.

You want tradition? That ship sailed when they crushed these conferences and bowl tie-ins. Stop whining and losing(SEC), it looks too much like preteen girls fighting over lip gloss. Just win and remove all doubt. After all, it should mean more.....right?

The SEC finally had to play a game outside of the South and look at the result. For way to long they've refused to play a West cost team at home or a BG1 team at home in December or November. Like playing in the south in September isn't a home field advantage.

You are absolutely correct.......Indiana belonged, SMU and Tenn belonged. They earned their spots. Alabama lost 3 games....so they did not belong.

Kirk Herbstreit is under pressure to defend the myth of SEC dominance. If Indiana did not belong why was Tenn there.  Ohio State blew them off the field.

Georgia flys thru the playoffs playing ND and potentially Penn St......while Oregon plays Oh St and Texas. Again, total bias. Trying to trip up number 1 so the SEC can appear dominant. A true ranking of the teams IMO......Oregon, Ohio State, Georgia, Texas, Notre Dame and everybody else.

The playoffs are not about picking the toughest conference....they are about picking a national champion.

The Hoosiers will be dropping by Autzen next season with a new QB from an old foe, CAL.

This best team garbage or blowouts in the first round garbage is stupid. We got blowouts in the pre BCS era, BCS era and four team playoff era. Remember Oregon vs FSU? How about Alabama vs Michigan State, Clemson vs Ohio State, Clemson vs Notre Dame, LSU vs Oklahoma and you can go on and on.

As this playoff home game scheduling becomes normalized and the CFP gets the seeding fixed, you'll get more compelling matchups. The griping from ESPN is a way to get people talking.  I take it all with a grain of salt. Let's get the seeding fixed though. Arizona State and Boise State deserved to get in, they didn't deserve byes though.

Re: Tennessee.

I kept hearing in the build up to the game that Tenn. had one of the best, if not the best, rushing attacks in the nation.

Then find out that their star RB is out with a hamstring issue. Really is a shame when a team can't be full strength.

Sounds like Tenn.'s passing game was built around play-action.

As a long-time 49ers fan, under the Kyle Shanahan era, he doesn't have a good drop-back passing scheme, so when the run game isn't going and he can't rely on the play-action . . . it looks sad.

I think Tenn. deserved to be in there, but the injury bug hit a very key piece to their offensive puzzle.

That said, every time tosu's RBs starting running, I kept thinking, "I've never seen a highly touted SEC defense look so slow."

The one good thing about the post 1st round bloviating is that it has exposed the SEC and ESPN for the entitled entities they are. They're fine when 2 SEC teams are battling it out for the championship in the 4 team invitational. But only 2 in the 12 team format? That's not fair.

Most people realized 2 weeks into it that the ranking wasn't the problem. It was the seeding. You can quibble about Indiana and its weak SOS. But not if you're Alabama, with their L's to Vandy, Tennessee, the Tennessee that got blown out by osu2 and 24-3 to 6-6 Alabama?

How can even the biggest Roll Tide fan say that Alabama team deserved to be in the Playoff?

The SEC is used to getting it's way. Alabama has gotten the nod several times while the narrative or formula is shaped to get them in. Kiffin recently said Nick Saban should become the commissioner of college football. "All hail the SEC!!!". The bully will keep pushing you till he gets pushed to the ground. Put less SEC teams in next year to send a message.

This SEC whining needs to stop. Next thing you know we'll get SEC schedules with three FCS teams on them. Sankey will be pushing for more SEC teams every year, regardless of how ridiculous it seems.

Maybe I should be for it. We'd get six or seven SEC teams every year. 7-5 Florida would be a fringe playoff team🤣.

The SEC and B1G could entirely settle this by scheduling the other p2 in November.  Then SOS will truly be on display.

Better yet, leave games open in each of the "P4"/G5 conferences in late October to late November so the contenders can weed out the Pretenders.

Will they do that?  Probably not.

I would love to have seen a Minnesota versus Ole Miss in Minneapolis one year, and a USC versus Bama in Tuscaloosa.  Indiana at South Carolina.  A&M versus Miami.  Missouri versus SMU.

The possibilities are wonderful.  The impact enormous.  The TV ratings close to playoff type numbers for the teams still in contention. Better yet, it would preserve what makes college football different than the NFL (a pull for your alma mater and rooting for the teams to beat the teams you hate).

All the teams would be who they are, and we would get a mini playoff for the main contenders, and exposure of the true depth of each power conference the first and second week of November, maybe the last week of October. That would clean up a lot of mystery about who is qualified.

But the SEC won't do that because their true depth would be on display.  But Indiana would have been exposed.  South Carolina would have had another Clemson like matchup to display their level in comparison to Bama and Ole Miss.

Bama and Ole Miss could state their case on the field instead of  hiding behind their conference. Notre Dame would have to prove they could handle more than just the ACC. Indiana, Miami, SMU, Clemson, Kansas State, Colorado,ASU and BYU would had their shot at showcasing  their status.

It might even work in lieu of the CCGs.  That way, Ohio State can face Tennessee before the playoffs, and Oregon could have displayed what they were against Bama or Ole Miss since both of them were supposedly going to be favorites against the spread.

What I'm saying is a little creativity would go very far to separate the wheat from the chaff while still preserving the beauty of college football.

The end of the regular season can function like the.'play in' games in the NCAA basketball tourney.  Some kind of format to make the end of the season a TV bonanza while people talk about who is actually deserving.  The playoff committee could still be a part of the process because let's face it, controversy sells.

The SEC could toot its horn and demonstrate their belief they are a better conference.  The ACC and Big12 could show their Boise State circa 2004 chops.  Notre Dame would been exposed without really losing much status with a decent showing (their defense impressed me this year, not sold on their offense though).

I guess I like to write novels, but long story short, the P2 can take their regular season money with their power contracts, while the other p2 can get some good TV money from the deal.  Even the contending G5 could get in the game.

This kind of format would allow the P2 their power,, while providing some financial assistance to the P2 and the G5 contenders.  College Football would still look like College Football and fans outside the P2 would still be interested in the P2 ( I don't think that will happen if the P2 go down the road they'd like to go).

In my opinion, this comes down to greed versus protecting the sanctity of college football.  We know the SEC has more talent in their region.  We know the P2 are way better than the rest.  The TV execs can get their main playoff matchups without soiling college football. It's up to the universities to fight for the game.

"The deafening silence of those at ESPN [after Ohio State blew out Tennessee] combined with Herbstreit’s gibberish about wins shouldn’t matter, tells you they do not care about college football as a whole. They only care about their partnership with the SEC."

Well said!

Herbstreit is really ruining his good reputation, all for E$PN / $EC.
