Vanducky No. 2 Share Posted Saturday at 05:01 PM Quote Tennessee was aware that Iamaleava's representatives had reached out to at least one other school, Oregon, prior to the start of spring practice, sources told ESPN, but Oregon said it wasn't interested. I hope this is accurate. This kind of thing could really divide a locker room. Sources - Tennessee moving on from starting QB Nico Iamaleava - ESPN WWW.ESPN.COM Tennessee is moving on from starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava, sources told ESPN, in the wake of his decision to not attend practice Friday amid NIL contract discussions with the school.

It has been reported that Dan tipped off the Tennessee coach, Heupel, that Nico's representatives were shopping him. The article on Fansided noted that Dan wasn't interested in Nico and speculated that he alerted Heupel so Nico wouldn't go to USC or Ohio State. Dan may have tipped off Heupel as a courtesy but for no other reason. Nico looking for 'market value,' has left the program. Another article had him looking at SC, Ohio State, and three SEC schools. Ohio State has a bevy of young QBs. SC has 5-star Husan Longstreet who flipped from A+M. UGA, Bama, and Ole Miss were also mentioned as landing spots. However, the SEC continues to restrict Spring portal intraconference transfers by not allowing immediate eligibility. This is the first but not the last of college players with NIL deals looking to improve their deal(s) by threatening to walk. Without transfer restrictions in the NFL, we'd see the same thing in the pros and even with restrictions NFL players occasionally hold out of practice. If the House Settlement is approved, players will receive payments directly from their university. I imagine contracts will prohibit Nico-like behavior but will restrictions hold up in court? The professional leagues have enforceable restraint on movement because the players are members of a union that bargains on their behalf. IMO, the House Settlement is a last gasp by the NCAA to have any control over football. The settlement may slow down but it will not stop an NFL-Lite College Super League with bargained agreements with the players. 1

As I posted above, if Danno had a role in any of this 'stuff' it was tipping off his friend Josh Heupel and nothing more. Nico was average last season with one of the easier SEC schedules. I believe he failed his 'Show Me More Money,' tryout vs. Ohio State. I think he'd be hard-pressed to win the backup QB job with OBD. I don't see Division Street throwing millions of dollars at this kid or a big chunk of House Settlement money being allocated to Nico. Nico leaving Tennessee for more money when he was making millions in Knoxville is not a good look. The type of behavior that will undoubtedly turn some CFB fans off. 1

HDuck No. 8 Share Posted Saturday at 07:22 PM Reportedly...if anything from the Internet is ever an accurate report.... both Notre Dame and USC have told him not interested, and Lanning called Heupel a few days ago. Imagine the scrutiny that will accompany any program that offers Nico a spot now that this publicity has surfaced. The theory is he was jealous of his current NIL in comparison to what a couple more recent portal transfers have received. Now, he may have to hope he can find a spot that will match Tennessee? That may be problematic based on the P.R. fallout.
HDuck No. 9 Share Posted Saturday at 07:31 PM "Tennessee might be interested in whoever is the No. 2 QB at Oregon after the Spring Game" Not directly tied to my comment here, but except in very adversarial relationships, I bet there is more communication between head coaches about potential players than we realize. Might Cristobal and Matt Wells (Tex Tech) had some conversation about Tyler Shough before the transfer, for example? If a kid wants to leave, help him find a spot? If a kid wants to arrive, check with his former head coach first? And, so on. 1
Dave23 No. 10 Share Posted Saturday at 07:31 PM Do you think this looks good for his future in the NFL? When will these guys learn to play the long game and prove it on the field. His stats and leadership aren't even close to what top QBs are doing so maybe it a get it while you can type things or just greedy agents with bad advice. GeotechDuck No. 16 Share Posted Saturday at 10:52 PM (edited) Noooooo!! IMO, this kid doesn’t deserve $100k, let alone $4M. If you take out the Vandy game, he only had 5 TDs total against the entire rest of his SEC schedule. I’m not worried. Lanning knows better! Drake Moderator No. 17 Share Posted Saturday at 11:28 PM Not too sure what donors want to fork over big money for someone who quits on a team. At some point the kid needs to earn his money, and make the decision that he wants to be a leader. Right now he is simply a quitter. Read an article that stated that an in conference transfer during the spring requires he sit out a season. So, high probability he ends up in the BIG, or ACC. In two outings against the Dawgs, the defense absolutely rattled him both times, but that happened to a lot of opposing QBs, several better than Nico. I wouldn't touch the guy and I am pretty sure he has really sunk his football future. 1
1Funduck No. 22 Share Posted Sunday at 01:37 PM NFL contracts have 'guaranteed' money and then 'performance' bonuses money. Yes, there are signing bonuses, but there needs to be some sense of base pay and then performances pay linked to individual as well as team accomplishments. JabbaNoBargain No. 28 Share Posted Sunday at 04:31 PM (edited) Not sure if there was a strategy here, but it backfired if there was. With the no transfer within the SEC spring rule he’s almost guaranteed he’ll have to enter the portal twice or take a lot less $$. Outside the SEC there are probably like 6 schools that would even entertain paying what he currently makes let alone what he was sitting out for. I can't imagine them wanting to pay ten million this year on three QBs in a rebuilding year. Underwood is the phenom their boosters want to play. I only see one place and that's UCLA, but do they have the money to give a middling QB 4 million a year? Also remember 4 million in California is likely worth only three million. Now if it was Texas Tech or UCF it would be 4 due to no State taxes. 1
