He cited a history professor who acknowledged that one side did, in fact, fight the war to continue slavery, and the other side fought to end it....and won. He feels that 1) that is how it should be considered, and 2) Nobody actually thinks of the real Civil War when we refer to our football game. And ESPN GameDay is doing a short clip on the return of the Platypus Trophy, so watch out for that Saturday morning. Yesterday at 08:33 PM1 day No. I'll be honest... I was for changing the name away from Civil War. It's actually my second article on FishDuck. However, I did have the expectation that the game would be renamed and thus rebranded into something new. That was back in 2020 and there has been NO effort to rebrand this game. The teams are now in different conferences and the fans have moved on. There was a moment where this game could have been renamed and the fans would have gone a long with it in a year or so. Come on... Platypus Bowl with a trophy and throw in a bunch of new marketing around it. Fans would have disliked it at first but after a year or so would have been fine with it. Also... putting a trophy front and center in the rivalry would have made it very B1G (despite little brother not being a member). But nothing happened. So I went back to calling it the Civil War years ago. Calling it "Rivalry Game" or whatever has no character and it's frankly too clunky for any fan to adopt. One of those instances where basically anything would have been better than "Rivalry Game."
Yesterday at 08:37 PM1 day No. I've never stopped calling it the 'Civil War'.Always thought the reasons were ill advised, uninformed, and who cares anyway. We, as a country to easily overly politicize everything. Besides, it really is a 'civil" Civil War.As for Mr C, he has attached himself to a sinking ship (Pac(St)8) and desperately needs paid viewers. Of which I will never be one.Go Ducks! Put lil' bro in his place.
23 hours ago23 hr Moderator No. I always thought of the name as a play on the word “civil”. As in, we at times tolerate each other…no confederate flag involved. However, the fact that Oregon is known as the Beaver State should be the next thing cancelled.
19 hours ago19 hr Moderator No. I’m all for calling it the “War of Northern Aggression “ since Eugene is south of Corvallis.
17 hours ago17 hr No. A war? This is going to be like a fight between a yokuzuna sumo and a one hundred pound bookkeeper who thinks he can compete because he watched Dragonball on cartoon Network.
16 hours ago16 hr No. John Canzano....leading from behind since forever.Imagine being replaced by Aaron Fentress.
15 hours ago15 hr No. I've never known the game as anything other than the civil war and never did see the connection to the carnage of 1861-1865. And truly, I know it is a rivalry game but if the 19th century civil war had been as one-sided as this year's game appears to be, it would have been over after the first battle of Bull Run (and there would have been no second).
6 hours ago6 hr No. The Platypus Trophy keeps disappearing only to turn up again. I'm not a fan of this trophy, so hope that it gets stashed in some closet where no one finds it for a 100 years. 😉
