The No. 8 Oregon Ducks (5-1, 2-1 Big Ten) head east for a Saturday matchup against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (3-3, 0-3 Big Ten) this week. The Ducks are looking to bounce back after losing to Indiana 30-20 at home in Eugene. Last week’s loss was just the seventh under head coach Dan Lanning and the second at home since 2022. Oregon’s offense put up a season-low 267 total yards and ran for just 81 yards. The defense played a respectable game and did enough to keep the Ducks in that game. Rutgers on the other hand is back at home after a West Coast road trip of their own to Seattle, where the Scarlet Knights fell 38-19 to the Washington Huskies. The schedule doesn’t get much easier for them this weekend with a matchup against the Ducks. They’ll also face Ohio State, Maryland and Penn State this season after hosting Oregon on Saturday. The Ducks are the current betting favorites at -17 on BetMGM. This weekend’s game will be the first ever meeting between Oregon and Rutgers after the Ducks joined the Big Ten last season. ScoopDuckOn3’s Max Torres and Richie O’Leary of the Knight report preview and predict this weekend’s matchup on the latest episode of the Ducks Dish Podcast PODCAST: Previewing and Predicting Oregon vs. Rutgers With Richie O'Leary

Things We Can Learn - Concerns About the 4th Quarter Performance...
I think the problem is largely Stein being very predictable, he doesn't adjust very quickly, he gets stubborn in his philosophy, he doesn't set up plays very well for later, a great example of this is the lack of fake screens to open up the go route on the outside, we were excellent at this during the Kelly and Helfrich years.

Things We Can Learn - Concerns About the 4th Quarter Performance...
Against the only two 'real' teams we have played -- IU & PSU, our 3rd down conversion rate has been atrocious. Against these two schools, we only converted on third down 28% of the time. And although our fourth down conversion rate is an impressive 73% (8/11), it's just a dangerous way of living and typically not sustainable. We seem to be getting ourselves in a hole on first down way too often. Hopefully, this changes starting tomorrow.

Cignetti Signs New 8 Year Contract at 11.6 Million per Year...With Indiana
From 1995-2023, IU had 3 barely winning seasons. Since Cig in 2024, he will have them in the CFP two straight years in a row. $93 million over 8 years is a lot of dough, but not if he can keep them winning. And although history does not guarantee future results (we longtime Duck fans can attest to this), given their program history, along with the fact that I don't think they have a Phil Knight in their back pocket... Along with the fact that IU is on the hook for the full balance of his contract if they fire him without cause (and losing is not 'cause')... This seems risky to me... but everything has a degree of risk. Bottom line for me is if I was in IU's situation, I would have made the same offer. IMHO, prior to the new contract, Cig was just too damn poachable to not lock down.

Oregon Ducks Take Lumps, Luggage for Rutgers Reckoning
Thank you, Jordan. A great read; Dan Jenkins-like word smithing. Three defense rankings this far into the season stand out to me: Sacks 96, Tackles for Loss 114, Red Zone Defense 133. The Total Defense ranking of 8th is impressive, but where is the killer instinct? CB Finney, who has been a revelation, brought the crowd back into the game with his late in the game pick-6. Then, as was the case at Northwestern and Penn State, the defense couldn't stop Indiana in the 4th quarter. With the crowd roaring, Mendoza marched Indiana 62 yards to a TD, going 5-7, and a TD pass for the winning points. This is not your typical Greg Schiano football team that usually plays great defense and has solid special teams play. The Rutgers offense is humming, the defense, especially in the 2nd half, has been porous. Special teams have been average at best, but this is also the case with OBD's not-so-special teams. In a game vs. a ranked opponent, you cannot miss a chippy FG. Rutgers has an excellent passing attack. QB Athan K., The Greek Rifle, is having an excellent season. Sheffield and Strong are among the best receivers in the B1G. The Oregon D needs to pressure the QB, something that has been lacking all season. The offense shone against Montana State (No. 4 in FCS rankings) and one-win OK State, and winless Oregon State. OK State in 2025 is a P4 team in name only. Against Big 10 competition, the offense has looked lackluster at best. OBD did not have a chance to rebound against a true P4 opponent after the 1/1/25 wipeout until the game at Northwestern. Yes, the loss to Indiana was the first regular-season B1G loss, but as far as I'm concerned, in 2025, Oregon is 2-2 vs. B1G opponents. Ohio State had the roster advantage over Oregon. OBD's 2025 team has a No. 5 cumulative roster ranking; Indiana's ranking is in the 70s. Rutgers' ranking is No. 30. OBD needs to show up in Jersey with a Bad Attitude. As the Penn State All-American and NFL All-Pro O-line player, Matt Millen, noted on B1G Today, in Pop Warner, junior high, high school, college, and the pros, he didn't need any help getting ready to play ball, ready to dominate the opponent. I don't overlook OBD having 18 new starters. Are there leaders on the field this season? Guys who don't need to be goosed by clever coaching props to want to punch someone in the mouth? Get Right at Rutgers! Thanks again, Jordan, for a terrific article.

Oregon Ducks Take Lumps, Luggage for Rutgers Reckoning
Mendoza got the ball out quickly. So did Penix, I recall. Indiana took advantage of being able to pressure Dante. Six sacks is a killer. I don't imagine Rutgers will be able to match Indiana's pressure. But if I were calling the Ducks' game I would run a lot.

Can Penn State Still Affect the B1G Playoff Picture?
Maybe if they hadn’t lost their veteran QB. Seems unlikely now, but maybe they have an amazing backup.

Cignetti Signs New 8 Year Contract at 11.6 Million per Year...With Indiana
Third highest paid coach with 1.5 years of P4 head coaching experience, zero conference titles, and 1 signature win? Seems like a bit of a reach IMO, but I hope he has sustained success.

Cignetti Signs New 8 Year Contract at 11.6 Million per Year...With Indiana
I don’t know what motivates Coach Cignetti. Perhaps he wants a chance to win a national championship and believes that another program will give him an opportunity to accomplish that goal? Perhaps he and/or his family doesn’t enjoy living in Indiana and would prefer somewhere else (sunny Southern California, middle of nowhere Pennsylvania)? I hope he stays because I enjoy the parity in college football but he will ultimately have to decide what is most important to him and his family. His $15M buyout will not stop programs from pursuing him.
