Oregon is the talk of college football following their 30-24 win over Penn State in Week 5. The game was littered with great performances as quarterback Dante Moore led the Ducks to their first signature win with him leading the offense. Talk continues to get louder nationally that this could be his only season as Oregon’s starter. Here's what I know for sure... Autzen is just damn loud, and it truly is likely the loudest stadium in the nation. But I cannot imagine that when they broke ground on this place six decades ago, that they had any idea what they were doing in regard to noise. I had to look up the architects which is a company out of Chicago named Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, and they are still going at it all over the world. The design could not have been more basic and cost-effective. It would be fun if the architect was still around to get his take on this. The land that Autzen sits on used to be a landfill. They basically dug a hole into the ground, and poured in a massive amount of concrete and created a huge block and called it Autzen Stadium. Other than Autzen, there really wasn't much to the place for three decades. It was a solid, reliable, concrete stadium... that amazingly reverberated sound in a way I've never heard in any other stadium in my life. And, at that time, besides Autzen, there was nothing else out there but a massive gravel parking lot and much of it pretty much turned into a lake during the rainy season... and it seemed like there were thousands of seagulls around as well. And then, 30 years later -- and thanks in large part to Ed and Elaine Moshofsky, came the first college indoor practice facility on the west coast in 1998. And then, in came Phil & Penny Knight. And as they say, the rest is history.

Hands down: Dante Moore To walk into that environment, show absolutely no fear, have incredible confidence from the first snap, and put up the exceptional numbers that he did, is something I might likely always remember. Certainly, I realize that he had 10 other excellent players around him, but everything starts and finishes with the QB... just ask PSU. And one more thing. In our culture of instant-gratification, the practice of "delayed gratification" seems to almost be a completely lost art. For this 19 year old (at that time), absolute stud, 5 star recruit, to wilfully choose to back up his bus, play the long game by going to Oregon, and riding the pines for a year, is a truly beautiful thing to see and an example for others to emulate. This action and decision on his part pretty much tells me all I need to know about this young man. He is likely going to have an excellent career in the NFL. But, even if that never happened, this is the kind of young man that is going to excel at whatever he chooses. His parents must have done some fine modeling and have to be incredibly proud of him... regardless of football.

Before the last two drives of the 4th quarter, PSU had a total of 67 passing yards and 67 rushing yards. That's astounding!!! I was pleasantly surprised with our overall defensive performance, particularly in the ground game. Our tackling was superb! It would be very difficult to find a more dominant D-line performance by OBD in a big game like this. I was surprised at just how bad Drew Allar was Saturday night with making decisions and throwing accuracy. His long TD pass was an absolute dime though. Penn St. had some success running late, but almost all of it was Drew Allar on QB sneaks or busted plays. Even on the last drive, if you take off 20 (3rd and 9) and 8 (2nd and 10) yard scrambles from Allar, we were still holding PSU under 3 ypc (9 for 25 yards). They just had two big 4th down conversions (one was initially stopped short). Most of their rushing yards came from obvious or most likely passing downs.

After the game, on the drive back to the hotel, I asked Critical Duck about the noise. I was thinking it was just me who thought Autzen was louder. He shared the same opinion and even mentioned that he had gotten the same feeling from a couple of ducks he had talked to. I can't put my finger on it, but the noise at Autzen just has more to it.

I just wish to say "Indiana Hoosiers, welcome to Autzen Stadium".

I think the BS call on Harkey stalled a drive that would have been a dagger and a 24 - 10 or 20 - 10 lead. But it happened and hats off to PSU for mounting that last drive. More hats off to the Ducks FINISHING.

I think there were also some offensive adjustments from the PSU OC that happened, at one point I noticed that they had 7 guys lined up on the OL to give Allar more time to throw.

I think that’s more of an away, big game phenomena. When an entitled, big stadium crowd is looking defeat square in the face, there can be this hush-dread that seems to freeze the stadium’s energy, and contributes to altering the momentum on the field. I remember experiencing that 4th quarter feeling in both the Big House and Neyland Stadium where it didn’t help either Michigan or Tennessee against superior Duck teams.

While it’s purely incidental, I’ve always found it interesting that Mike Billotti swears the stadium was louder before the 2002-03 south-side expansion. I think he credits that belief to a loss of decibel rebound off the donor roof which gained 17 feet of height over the original 12 thousand more voices has less impact than the old configuration? Reading these coaches’ comments comparing Autzen sound to much larger stadiums makes you realize it’s not body count that gives Autzen its loudness. Anyway, I give the benefit of the doubt to Mike whose tenure bridged the two editions of Autzen. You’d think he’d know.

Dierre Hill Jr. has earned more touches for sure. He has the breakaway speed we have been lacking for the past few seasons. He and Davison should absolutely be viewed as the "Thunder and Lighting" package. Will Stein should take a page from the Kenjon Barner/DAT era and make proper use of this duo.

If we don't win the Natty, is there enough NIL money and gratitude for Oregon for him to come back even as a top 5 draft pick?

I was surprised that Penn St. was able to mount a comeback they way they did. I'm not sure if it was just some scheme things as coach said after the game or what, but they almost pull victory out of the jaws of being dominated for most of the game. So, I would like to see them working on finishing against good teams. If we are up two touchdowns vs Indiana in the fourth quarter, lets win by three!
