Despite Insider Chaos, Oregon Hires Georgia’s Dan Lanning
30Duck replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
The fact that Lanning wasn't a blip on our radar, but was targeted by Mullens and PK, told me that amidst the confusion, they knew what they were doing. Approaching the DC of a record setting college football defense, from the SEC, while the team was prepping for the Playoffs, was ballsy. Getting him to sign on with Oregon showed a connection of kindred spirits. Mullens and PK knew how important this hire was for Oregon football, and Lanning was eager to be the coach that got Oregon back to elite level. -
Neither Luke Fickell or Matt Campbell had head coach experience before being hired at Cincinnati or Iowa State.

A, if gets a great OC, he gets an A+

I don't think the Ducks had a chance at getting Fickell, and I'm less nervous about where Lanning will have the Ducks in the next couple of years than I would be had Oregon hired an experienced coach such as Brian Harsin or Justin Wilcox.
-
That's Alabama, the lockdown D with the explosive O, that is the combination from which Dynasties are built. If Lanning can get that type of D at Oregon, it's a great floor to start from on getting an OC that generate an offense that completes annihilation of the other team.

ELITE Players Lanning Has Recruited....Whew!
30Duck replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Oregon has never had a Recruiter with this kind of connection to SEC talent, particularly on the defensive side. -

Yes, and now, Go Georgia, Win the Championship! -
Not to put too much emphasis on Buzz, but the speculation of hiring Lanning has already created more of it than I believe the hiring of Brian Harsin would. Bringing Kelly back would generate Buzz, but I wouldn't equate that with it being viewed as a fantastic hire football wise.

Mullen has shown that he's actually not averse to scoring, In one of his seasons at Florida, his QB, Kyle Trask threw for 4125 yards, 43 touchdowns.

USS Nimitz forever...Go NAVY!

The sources can't even agree. “He’s not currently the guy,” said one source with direct knowledge of the search. “Inaccurate,” offered a second.

I don't know if Canzano is so much dismissing it' just saying that the contract isn't signed yet, while AJC is treating the signing as a formality.

What Would Lanning Bring, What Would We Expect?

As we would with any coach, yes. -
What Would Lanning Bring, What Would We Expect?
30Duck replied to Haywarduck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
My first thought is that being the Dc at Georgia now is a very nice gig, so I believe that he is highly motivated to Just Do It at Oregon, and that alone is a positive for me. Haywarduck mentioned the recruiting he's been involved with, and his success at Georgia gives the Ducks inroads to defensive talent from SEC country that Oregon never had before. Of course he'll make mistakes, even Saban has erred. But from where I see him starting from, mistakes will be learned from, and just add to more positive production. -
Also throw in that Diaz didn't have the huge expectation for success that Mario has created. The U is expecting Mario to get them back to the Jimmy Johnson . Dennis Erickson time. If he pulls a Frost at Nebraska instead, ir won't be pretty.

Exactly. Oregon State would dominate the Big Sky Conference, the Beavers can reach a stage of being competitive in the Pac-12, but Oregon has too much to be satiisfied competing regularly for the Rose Bowl to be enough. Getting Lanning would be a sign to me that Oregon is still interested in competing at the highest level.

It was, and I believe the hiring of Helfrich was a disservice to him. Oregon desperately wanted to keep the Kelly train rolling and thought that Helfrich would do it. In theory that might work, but I feel like it insulated Helfrich. Being the head coach of a top tier program takes everything from a coach, Helfrich was never allowed to embrace the job completely as his, and erosion started and became inevitable.

No idea how it will work out with Lanning, But right now I'm a lot happier than I would be if it was going to be Harsin.
