1) The style of play he created (along with some spiffy uniforms) did a LOT of the recruiting for him. 2) Yes Chip did change college football forever - but it doesn't have to be what seals O's fate. O just has to get back to what had made them so special during those Kelly years. Even in losses, everyone enjoyed watching Oregon play football because it was exciting!

Sad and shocking. But that was Georgia. It'll only be devastating (imo) if Oregon doesn't improve from here on out each and every game to the end of the season. There's still a lot to play for, namely the Conference title and a top tier bowl game. All that is still in the mix.

It's a start and the journey has to start somewhere. Most individuals' 1st car isn't a corvette or tesla.

History Repeats as Oregon Gets Blown Out in “Payout Game”
Mic replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I guess I don't understand the meaning of the term "payout game". There's an interesting contrast at work here. The Ohio State win was unexpected by many of us and it generated a ton of enthusiasm that, unfortunately, didn't carry us thru to the end of the season. The loss to Georgia wasn't unexpected but its effects on the team (while yet to be determined) has the potential to devastate the moral and confidence of the team going forward the next 11 games. Coach Lanning has his real work cutout for him. The x's & o's he can leave to his Coordinators and assistant coaches for the most part. He's gotta rally his team and make sure this loss doesn't define the rest of the 2022 season. -
It's time to look forward guys, not back. Lanning & Co. need to focus on Eastern Washington, not what went wrong last week and why. There's time for that later Every game Oregon plays from here on out becomes increasingly important and Oregon can get back on track now and get that 1st win or mope and grumble till BYU hands us another loss just in time for conference play Not good.

History Repeats as Oregon Gets Blown Out in “Payout Game”
Mic replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
But...wasn't the win at Ohio State last year a "payout" game too? How quickly we discard the successes. This was a road game, against the defending national champs, with an entirely new coaching staff, new QB and sans our best RB to transfer. Did anyone here really expect Oregon would win this? Yeah, we thought it would be competitive so it's a bad loss. But let's not forget what Oregon did last year in the Horseshoe. -
Interesting. Different coaches, different ideas. I remember when our last bunch of coaches were all-in for this 5* out of Arizona, Ty Thompson, the highest rated QB ever recruited at Oregon. And we've seen almost nothing of him. If you are correct then the young man may as well transfer on to somewhere else. Maybe Cristobal's Miami. Problem is, Donte Moore is only a "commit' right now and we all know the word "commit" is fluid nowadays.
-
Correct. It was our whole team that got punched in the face by Georgia.

Oh! Whew -

Which is why I dread opening up the GoDucks page each morning hoping I don't see what I'm afraid I'll see: "Ty Thompson announces he's transferring to _______ University"....or some such.

OMG: A Lanning Quote That Makes Me Hurl...

But then, there's that pesky fly in the soup known as tOSU - in Columbus. -
LOL. I think the vast majority of us couldn't care less about "meaningless issues". There were much more important fish frying at the moment!

Yesterday’s Adversity Is an Opportunity for the Ducks To Grow
Mic replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Yes, we do. And I'd like to see Coach Lanning take full advantage of that by playing the other two QB's in the rotation whenever possible. -
I only posted this with the desire to voice an opinion that Lanning should take this next opportunity to get some game experience for Ty Thompson and Jay Butterfield. What good does it do Oregon (beside lifting spirits a bit) to play Nix all game long if the Ducks "maul" the Eagles (as you say) for 4 straight quarters w/o getting Thompson and Butterfield in the game? In my humble opinion these two young men need to play, preferably before Nix goes down with an injury or we lose one or both to transfer.

Yesterday’s Adversity Is an Opportunity for the Ducks To Grow

They probably spank us again - unless we get this new defense (and lack of offense) figured out by November. -
Sometimes I wonder if this desperate rush to find a transfer QB isn't being driven by an aging Phil Knight. It's understandable, given all that PK's done for Oregon to want to get him his Championship. We all share his desire, w/o his commitments made to the University and the Football program in general. I, for one, won't gain-say him his desire, he's certainly earned his say many, many times over. I just wonder tho, if this isn't what's driving this?

Yesterday’s Adversity Is an Opportunity for the Ducks To Grow

Don't forget Utah ( very tough loss to Florida in the swamp) and don't underestimate USC, nor OSU. 'Soft' is relative right now given the Duck's question marks going forward. -
EWU won their game yesterday, a back-n-forth affair, over Tennessee State 36-29. The game was tied late in the 4th when EWU scored the winning TD with 2:39 left to go. A revealing weakness on the part of EWU was Tenn States two TD passes, one of 67 yards and another of 57 yards. They (EWU) also gave up a 43-yard TD run to the Eagles. Seems to me that if Oregon can't manage to exploit those two glaring weaknesses with Nix at QB it would be a great time to give the ball to either Thompson or Butterfield (with the stronger arm) to see if they can do it. As I said in an earlier post, I'd be shocked not to see either backups, (or both) next Saturday. My heart says 55-0 Oregon. My head says 36-21.

Does Oregon’s Offense Go Smashmouth? – OBD Exclusive Article
Mic replied to DazeNconfused's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
There aren't a lot of other options at this point, is there? -
I'll be shocked NOT to see Thompson and/or Butterfield on the field next week. Bo will likely start but at some point a coach has to give his backups meaningful playing time. Regardless of what we think of Bo Nix, an injury can happen on any play - and then what? Maybe EWU will afford us a good look at both.

I think you've probably hit the nail on its head here. As much as Lanning has confidence in the so-call 'Mint Defense' O doesn't seem to have the player personnel to make it work against a team of Georgia's caliber. If he's the genius we've all be told he is then he needs to figure out something that will work with the players he has - and fast! EWU might be a God-send for us (maybe not?) to get ready for a big, strong BYU team and then conference play. -
Agreed. But...
-
I'm guessing here that he saw the TE stumble and fall, throwing the ball low into the ground to stop the clock. He just didn't throw it low enough.
-
Starting Bo Nix was understandable, I think. Not trying out the young QB's was puzzling, imo. We know both Thompson & Butterfield are QB's currently 'objects of interest' by coaches mining the portal for talent. This is concerning to many of us, especially after yesterday afternoon.

Better players and a very strong familiarity with the type of defense Lanning runs. It shouldn't have come to us as such a surprise.
