Pac-12 Refs. UCLA pass play to the UW 37 with a defensive holding and a late hit out of bounds. You take the play or the holding call. Its not that hard. The Refs give the play to the 37. Give the 10 yards for holding and the 15 for the hit out of bounds. They spot the ball on the UW 12. Are we ever going to hold our Refs to a higher standard, this has gone on for years! -
UCLA vs. Washington Game Thread
DazeNconfused replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
We have some QBs in the Pac-12 this year for sure. First series UCLA went Cover-1 on 4th down and got beat in man-to-man for a 33 yard TD Both teams are mixing the cover looks abs by comparison Oregon looks to show Cover-2 and don't try to hide it. Lots of 4 WR sets and some 5 WRs and each team is passing twice as much as running. It's a passing game in college football now. I wonder if Lanning might break out a lot of Dime with six DBs against these guys? -
Laning has rushed up to six this year - we just haven't had much sucess with it. We will see as the season goes on how it shakes out and if we have games that Lanning plays more aggressive in the Cover-1 some games to rush an extra man or to take away the underneath passing game. Right now, it seems over 90% of the time we are playing Cover-2. Lanning has had us run some Dime packages for a sixth DB so it appears Lanning is going more to numbers in the passing game than the blitz game. Lanning is moving people around in the base 4-2-5 with the Cover-2. On pass downs I've seen Sewell as the stand-up rush edge and Flowe-Bassa as the inside linebackers. I've also seen Bassa and Brown as the inside linebackers on passing downs. I've seen him run a 4-1-6 Dime with Flowe as the stand-up edge and Bassa as the only inside linebacker. He has also run a Dime with Bassa as the sixth DB. Lanning has showed he will move Sewell out of the inside backer spot and bring in speed on some passing downs, that shows the premium Lanning puts on speed on pass downs.

Pumped For Tonight's Bruins v Huskies Game
DazeNconfused replied to Notalot's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I'm interested to see if UCLA plays a Cover-2 on Penix, or if they mix it up and go Cover-1 on 3rd and long to free up an extra rusher. The bark eaters mixed up the covers against USC last week and got good push up front, what will UCLA do with Penix? It's also going to see what UW does to try to slow UCLA down. I don't expect we are going to see either team play a bunch of Cover-1 and play the aggressive Havoc downhill with the front seven like we saw WAZZU against us last week. Since we play both these teams, and both have good mobile QBs I want to see if either defense can shut them down. Then next weekend I want to see WAZZU and USC go at it and see how the USC OL handles that aggressive WAZZU defense, can they protect the QB? -
I think it's strategy - our offense is as explosive as we have seen since the Chip Kelly Era. The Ducks DL & LB's are stuffing the run, making teams one dimensional by having to pass to move the ball. Lanning is base Cover-2 with the two deep safeties and giving up the underneath routes -- making the passing game one dimensional. Lanning is getting pressure rushing four and if the QB holds the ball waiting for the deep route to develop we are getting coverage sacks. Lanning is dictating how teams attack his offense and he isn't giving up two or three long one play touchdowns in a game. To beat Oregon Lanning is making teams outscore his offense while executing a bunch of long scoring drives. The Pac-12 some good QBs we play that air it out. We aren't letting them over the top. It only takes one penalty or sack to kill a drive or force a field goal. Executing long drive after drive is tough.

I'm glad you liked the article! Charles deserves a ton of credit; his hands are on this article top to bottom. We don't just tell readers about what we are seeing, we try to give insight into why we are seeing things. FishDuck is the first I've seen the publish that the Bend-But-Don't-Break is back! We are also the first saying this is the closest thing to the Chip Kelly Oregon Duck Football - the Oregon Football Brand I shocked Charles yesterday when I said we are No. 16 in the Nation in rush defense while playing the Oregon Cover-2 with two deep safties. Charles has hours and hours in watching the Lanning scheme at Georgia, he is a source of information when I have questions. He has told us about the MINT defense front: I credit it to our great run game defense, but I can't tell you the nut and bolts of it like he can. How Lanning's using simulated pressures to get pressure with the four-man rush: Charles is our guy! He has done a zone blitz video back from the Nick Aliotti days that is apparently very similar to what Lanning is doing. There are lots of questions we have now with the Bend-But-Don't-Break Redux; I know I was just yesterday hitting Charles with another question. I'm sure Mr. FishDuck will have more to share with us. It's only week four and things seem turned upside down from what I expected. I feel like Lanning did the Rope-A-Dope on me, but I like it.

Bo Nix Gives Oregon’s Offense New Life

I was a skeptic - but he has done the things I said he needed to do to improve. The jump he has made is amazing. The best late bloomer since Joe Burrow. I'm all in and riding the Bo Bandwagon, even if he has a rough game. All QBs do. Joshua did a good article at the right time. -

Lanning/Lupoi Blitzes: How Oregon Plays It Safe
DazeNconfused replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Great point Marsh, you wonder if dan and Tosh are teaching the DL guys when to read they need to be containing on the rush? Charles rocked this article and video. On the first video at the 26 second mark, we see Bridges guy has beat him inside but that's impossible for Ward to make when he's been flushed to the other sideline. and he doesn't get the time to let the WR come across the field to him. Also, Benett was at the Star and Stephans who was the deep safety on that side are switching off their men they are covering. Then at the 28 second mark we see the other deep safety dropped almost to the endzone on his sides hash mark. Charles and my articles without knowing really tied into each other and he did a great job all around on his article. -
Best Defense: Wazzu’s Cover-1 or Oregon’s Cover-2?

Good points and we face good QBs this year. Jalen Hall, Cameron Ward, Tanner McKee, Penix Jr, Cam Rising and possibly Caleb Williams in the Pac-12 Championship. -
Best Defense: Wazzu’s Cover-1 or Oregon’s Cover-2?
DazeNconfused replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I think Stanford will try to hit some mid-range balls on us. Two deep safeties don't exclude completing a downfield pass, it just makes it harder and more chance of a pick. Tree has some tall WR and the QB is a big guy with a big arm. A mid-range route from a WR set out wide that shows an inside move will hold the safety and let them turn the route back to the sideline like an out-post pattern. A great back shoulder throw where a big WR highpoints can beat the corner and safety who is coming over to help. But it takes a great route, a great throw that is on time and a great high-point catch. Thats a lot harder to pull off than the short passing game on a consistent basis and why you see teams working underneath on us. The other question is if the Tree OL can block long enough for mid-range and deep routes to develop? It's a lot easier to play pass defense as a corner when you know you have help over the top in Cover-2. Now WAZZU with the one deep and man-to-man is a lot easier to hit those mid-range and deep balls. The corners have to keep outside leverage because if they let a guy up the sideline right away, it's the farthest point for the deep safety to come give help. So, the WAZZU DBs are open to inside moves that the WR can gain separation and once your behind in man-to-man it's hard to catch up. The corner reacts inside to cover the route and then the WR reacts outside and gets it. Plus, against Cover-1 if you run two go routes up the sideline the safety can only help on one - you're getting man-to-man on one side. Cover-1 gets easier to defend the long ball if you have a Dien Sanders - Jalen Ramsey type of corner, you just let him play man deep on his own if they test him. -

Tree ran for 200 yards on USC but the Huskies held them to 86 yards or so. I don't think they are going to be able to run the ball on us much. The have that Slow Mesh RPO I posted on yesterday - they won't be the old power run play action team. Thye still have big WRs - I'd like to see Bridges with is his 6'3" frame and 7-foot wingspan to stone the endzone fade on them! -
Lanning/Lupoi Blitzes: How Oregon Plays It Safe
DazeNconfused replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
The Ducks have the best DL in the Pac-12. Even with 1st team All-Pac Popo out we have Dorlus All-Pac. Taki was PFF top 5 DL in Pac last year. Hudson-Ware is a four star out of Mater Dei. Riley and Rogers are B1G maulers. The Ducks also have the best LB room in the Pac. All this is part of the reason we expected the Havoc on defense - but it is showing through in how we are stopping the run with two deep safeties. -
Lanning/Lupoi Blitzes: How Oregon Plays It Safe
DazeNconfused replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Great post. We have flushed the BYU and WAZZU QBs to one side of the field at times and that really takes away the far third of the field as an option to pass to. Also, both were mobile as you say and projected 1st round picks - who threw quite a few balls away. Against lessor QBs we might start to see more forced throws and interceptions. -
Lanning/Lupoi Blitzes: How Oregon Plays It Safe
DazeNconfused replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
That 86.5 yards includes the game with Georgia whose RBs and OL are levels above the Pac-12. Against BYU and WAZZU we have held them combined to 114 yards on 49 rushes for a 2.3 yards per carry average and 57 yards per game. You are correct run into the 2 deep safeties, and when they go one deep safety to stop the run then pass on them. I've heard Dan Mullen say that. The Ducks are stuffing the run even with two deep safeties. I guess that would have to do with the defensive line and the MINT that is in a 4-0-4 technique you've schooled me in, along with strong LB play against the run? Equally impressive the Ducks offense ran into the WAZZU Cover-1 with the extra defender in the box for 178 yards at a 5.6 yard per carry clip. Lanning is getting it done with Mario's players in the trenches on both sides while Dilly has the offense explosive - what a quick turnaround. -
Best Defense: Wazzu’s Cover-1 or Oregon’s Cover-2?
DazeNconfused replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Yes! That extra man up close made them fast to the edges. They are daring you to run or pass to the edges, and if your run straight at them they have the numbers in the box. The Ducks are giving you those bubble screens, slants, short crosses and RB screes - and it takes us longer to get the safety into the play to support it. WAZZU is giving up the mid-range crosses and deep balls - the Ducks are taking that away. It will be interesting to see how USC does with the WAZZU defense in two weeks. Can the USC OL protect long enough for the mid-range crosses and deep routes to open up? WAZZU is built to rush 5 when it wants with is one deep safety Cover-1 scheme. I didn't catch much of the Beavs - USC game, but I did see the beavs run both cover-1 and cover-2. -
Lanning/Lupoi Blitzes: How Oregon Plays It Safe
DazeNconfused replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Lanning does trust his secondary, let me explain. This is what I've come up with in large part trading takes back and forth with Charles - if I'm partway there he fills in the blank spots for me well. But first this is a great article, the stills and videos tie in with what Charles is teaching so well. They also show the two deep safeties in the Oregon Cover-2 well. Well Done, Charles!! People should really learn from this. I was expecting with the Lanning hire we'd get a havoc downhill defense like WAZZU runs. But it appears Lanning's brilliant mind has sorted his personnel and he is controlling the game with his defense. Lanning wants to stress the opposing teams offensive line coach and players - he is doing that by them never knowing what four players are going to rush the passer. The Duck's defense is stuffing the run and sits at No. 16 in rush defense at 86.5 yards per game. So, teams have to pass to move the ball consistently. He has made teams one dimensional on offense. Lanning is running the Cover-2 with the two deep safeties. That look pre-snap tells the QB the open read will be bubble screens, slants, short crosses and RB screens. The QB knows any deep pass with have max protection from the two deep safeties and is the wrong read. Lanning has now made the other teams passing game one dimensional. Lanning is controlling how the other team attacks his defense. They can't run and they can't pass deep, and Lanning gets enough pressure rushing four to cause problems. When QBs hold the ball and look for the deep a ball we are getting pressure to them. To tie this up I think Lanning knew he was going to have a high scoring offense with explosion plays and lighting fast scoring drives. He expects to play from the lead most of the time and make teams pass to catch up. His defense is built to not let other teams run the ball effectively so they can establish early control of the game with the run. Then when the Ducks get out to a lead - teams will have to pass more to catch up. The open spots Lanning is giving them to pass is underneath making them drive the field, they run clock and they get no over the top huge explosion plays. Until some team can come out and run the ball early with enough sucess that they can get out to a lead, and their defense is slowing us down... well only then do i suspect we will adjust to stop them. Based on what I think and Charles input. I think we will see this scheme on defense with the Cover-2 and simulated pressures in the four-man rush continue to be the heart of our defensive scheme. -
