Ducks Mid-Season: Tell Us What Surprises You So Far
DazeNconfused replied to DazeNconfused's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
This is another huge story. Dilly has us sitting #5 in total offense. He had his Memphis team #4 in FBS his first year there. Dilly is the real deal. -
Ducks Mid-Season: Tell Us What Surprises You So Far
DazeNconfused replied to DazeNconfused's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Great point, thanks for sharing. The light bulb just went on for me. That's why I started this thread! I've seen this as well, but never really processed it the way you put it. This is a big story and a huge change from the Mario Era! -
Ducks Mid-Season: Tell Us What Surprises You So Far
DazeNconfused replied to DazeNconfused's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I'm going to steal from a discussion I had with Charles after the Georgia game. I'm surprised how much we have improved on the perimeter with the WRs and TEs holding their blocks. Charles pointed out how we really struggled and that the Dawgs defenders really broke up plays getting off our blocks. We have improved a ton there and it's part of the reason we have such great offesne. -
What surprises you so far, or what are your surprises? I'm interested to see what others share as there are lots of great opinions on this board. Is it an underachieving position group or player? Is it player or position group that is over preforming your expectations? Is it a coach? The team as a whole or an area of the team that has shown improvement?

Popo Aumavae May Petition for Seventh Year
DazeNconfused replied to Steven A's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I've been wondering if he would try to pull that move! Also been wondering if Flowe not playing every game will come back next year. Bennett, DJ and Jordan Riley are out after this year. -
ESPN Matt Miller Has No Idea About Mario Cristobal
DazeNconfused replied to Tandaian's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
This is spot on! Mario's offense will probably end the year with a 440-ish yard average. He gets some yards each game with three long drives along with a few that sputter out into an FG try and a handful of three and outs. -
My Burgeoning Bromance With Bassa...
DazeNconfused replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
My bud was at the game last week and he has been big on Bassa since last year. He loves Bassa. But he was really impressed with Flowe seeing him play live, and he's been down on Flowe since last year with the injury bug. His hot take to me was Flowe is going to be a big key against the UCLA run game and RB Charbonnet. Smaller Bassa got trucked by a Zona RB last week and Charbonnet at 220lbs is a load. My Bud says if Flowe has a big game we will win that game and his takes a pretty dang smart. He was pro Bo Nix killing it and he was right on that one. -
Forsyth, 3-star Mario was the primary recruiter for, and the walk on Ryan Walk -- show Mario did develop some 3-stars into dudes. Harper was another 3-star of his that is Dude now also. Moore and Bass even though they were Top 3 JUCO guys were rated sorta higher 3-stars coming out of JUCO and he did a great job with them. Big Sala rating on the 247 composite was right around a top 200 4-star, so while Mario gets credit there, Sala wasn't a diamond in the rough. Mario showed he had an eye for 3-star guys he could develop into legit P-5 starters, not just the blue-chips. The other coach who really deserves some credit bit isn't here to get it is Big Joe Salave'a! Brandon Dorlus and Popo Aumave both 3-star recruits were first team All-Pac-12 dudes last year under him.

Brown was good his last year at BC. But he struggled last year and was slow or missed reads last year. TVD is doing the same this year at Miami. The route trees are different. Both QBs did better with schemes put guys more in space to deeper parts of the field where they could make throws. Mario has route trees with 3 guys running a 10-yard turn around with a 2-yard cross under that. There is a lot more congestion. AB and TVD read faster and throw better into a route not congested, as most would

I wrote an article two weeks ago that I speculated that maybe the OL was undeveloped to its full potential under Mario when compared to Klemm. But since then, my thought is that's awful hard to quantify. They would have to play in the same offensive scheme that Mario had, with Klemm coaching them to make it a controlled comparison. If Klemm coaching them better? Maybe? But the biggest difference I think is the run pass balance to the scheme that Dilly employs. Dilly stretches the field more and creates more space for the run game and makes the defense cover deeper on third down so they can't rush an extra defender as easily. Ponder this..Mayebe Mario's OL was better because they ran into more eight men in the box. Plus, with no routes on 3rd down past the sticks the defense tended to rush an extra man more? Ponder this one to close it out... How much better would AB and the Ducks offense had been last year in Dillys scheme? There's article right there. I will tell you this.. go watch the second half of the UW game last year in the rain storm.. we came out and ran the ball down their throat and the blocking was amazing. I counted 1 missed block in the half, and I watched that game a few times. That OL was good.

I don't get where you're getting the perception that we have been desperately rolling the dice on JUCO OL players? The fact is Mario excelled on getting the elite JUCO guys to Oregon who were better than the back half of the OL roster low 3-star guys. Besides what's it matter if a guy is a HS signee or a JUCO? What matters is who is better and plays. George Moore was the #3 JUCO tackle in the nation and Mario was his primary recruiter and he had a solid career at Oregon. He was hands down better than the 3-stars who have transferred out. Then Mario was able to pull Big Sala the # 1JUCO tackle who was rated a 4-star commit. I remember my buds and I being excited the day he committed. Big Sala was a huge get, the second highest rated OL in the class, Here is a link to his offers, there was nothing desperate about signing. Sala when you look at his offers. Take a look, Bama, Texas, Chokelahoma, FSU, ect offered him. Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu Timeline Events (247sports.com) Then Mario got TJ Bass the #2 JUCO guard who is a two-year starter and 3 times Pac-12 OL player of the week so far this season. Mario deserves a ton of credit for pulling 3 stud OL guys out of the JUCO who have kicked butt at Oregon. They came to Oregon for OL coaching and to develop under Mario and Mirabal. None of these guys were a desperate JUCO signing and the Jeffers, Randazzo and Jonhson's who couldn't beat them out weren't as good. Mario also pulled Womack from Bama here who was a 4-star. Mario was always taking 3-star OL projects in the back half of his classes that I never expected to jump the higher recruits, and he had good OL's every year he was here. Only five of the 15 or so on the roster at a time can play at one time. If low 3-star guys wanted a sure route to playing, then they should have gone to another school. As far as your claim of bringing in player after players in you don't want to play. that's football man. you can't have 15 blue-chip OL dudes on the roster. Mario would take some big bodied 3-star guys and offer them good coaching and the chance to develop. Sometimes one does develop and plays, but you need bodies for the two deep and the scout team. You can't just have the 8 OL guys who will play on your roster. Mario also brought in the deepest roster depth of blue-chip OL guys Oregon ever had, he put talent on that roster the OL had never been able to have. I think we all should give him a ton of credit for that. I don't think it's a red flag Dennis from Florida and Logan S followed him to the U, it shows they trust his OL coaching. Your also selling Dennis short as he was on the two deep and pushing for a starting spot last fall when he got hurt in camp and was out for the season. There are lots of things to gripe about with Mario - his OL record is really not one of them.

Forsyth and walk were part of Wille T's first and only class, but Mario was Forsyth's primary recruiter. Don't sleep on JUCO guys, there are Big-time Dudes to be had every year. Late bloomers underrated and bad grade pullers. Big Sala was the #1 JUCO tackle was an unranked prospect coming out of HS due to carrying a lot of bad weight. Bama offered Sala the same as Oregon when he came out of JUCO ball. Sala kept dropping bad weight at Oregon and is down like 60lbs from his HS days. If Sala had a good diet-strength program in HS he would have been a big-time recruit. Bass was the #1 guard in JUCO when Mirabal got him to Oregon. Tauanu'u, was a Top 100 kid and Top 10 rated tackle - he was a medical retirement; toy can't hang him on Mario. I was stoked when we got this kid, but football goes this way. Kingsley Suamataia seemed to be a Momma's boy and went back home to BYU where he is starting. Can't blame that on Mario. J. Dennis and Logan S. decided to follow Mario to the U. So that's not one you can hang around Mario's neck either. The rest of the guys you bring up were low 3-stars who wouldn't be expected to win job with the four-stars Mario were bringing in. They were given the chance to compete and push those guys - they got the coaching to develop. They have transferred out but are not worse off for their time under Mario and Mirabal. Harper a low 3-star has developed under Mario and look at him now. Just like Walk he is a legit Power-5 starter, that's props to Mario. Does the OL look improved? The pass protection seems better than the end of the last year. I like what Klemm has done, but the U line has improved overnight, so it's not like Mario and Mirabal are slouches. I would say this to you and Charles when you credit Klemm with making the OL better. A better offensive scheme is going to improve your per carry run average and reduce sacks. When the defense doesn't respect the passing game, they can put more in the box to get you in third and long, and they can rush another defender on 3rd and long. It's hard to quantify how much Dillys scheme is making the OL look better and Nix's canny ability to feel pressure much better than Brown and scramble. I love what Klemm has done, but there is very little OL wise to indict Mario on. The OL guys Mario got that were supposed to be Legit P-5 starters and stayed with him have all produced or are track. Jarmillo-Dennis will start next year, as will JPJ. Bram Walden is the one question, but he is a redshirt who has been banged up, kid was top 100 and we will see him next year playing.

Ty isn't Dillys recruit first off, Donte Moore coming in next year is Dilly's QB recruit Second, he isn't impressing in the least bit. One has to think he has looked better in practice than the games. With what Dilly has done guiding Bo Nox to making a solid jump in his level of play, Dilly has some currency as a QB whisper. I would not be surprised if Nix goes to the NFL if Dilly brings in another Vet QB transfer to fill the gap until Moore is ready to take over as QB1. Putting all the QB eggs in Ty's basket doesn't look smart, and if he is ahead of Butters in the Coaches eyes.. well, that's a worry. I wouldn't be surprised to see both Ty and Butters gone next year and a new transfer QB come in. I even wouldn't be surprised if both were told a Vet transfer QB was going to be brought in and if they don't like it, they can hit the portal.

Here is a quote from Zona HC Jedd Fisch that goes to the point of Dilly carving them up. “I think what you can see while it was happening live and I’m sure we’ll see it on film, what they do a really good job of is kicking the ball out. So if you sellout inside they do a really good job on the perimeter, perimeter screens, bubble passes and then what happens is you start cheating up, cheating up, cheating up. They hit two big explosive passes over the top, those were really you’re trying to sell out to stop the run and that’s what happens." What he is talking about is the Dilly scheme that Bo Nix is executing with his pre-snap reads.

Bridges got beat and a PI and the true Frosh Florence came in. Manning getting burn and made a couple plays. Lanning adjusting and good game plan by Zona to go at him Bridges is IMO better as a safety with his size and wingspan - not at corner -
One series out of his last 5 they did try to push the ball down the field. Adn your right he missed throws. I was wrong earlier the pick wasn't on the cross again. It was a deeper ball Jarmillo got beat at RT and the rusher hit Ty's arm. I think the offensive unit sorta takes the foot off the gas when he comes in. Part of it might be because mental knowing the plays aren't aggressive. I have no problem seeing Butters next as you posted. I've said in an article I wrote pre-season Butters was my QB2 after the spring game. I won't argue with you on the move to Butters I actually agree, I just want some better play calling scheme to develop the backup QB. I will say the last two staffs have had TY QB2- so they both see something in Ty.
-
Same goes for if Butters is in. Let them throw down the field and if that's not open there should be room to check down and let that player get some yards.

I'm not impressed with Ty so far this year -- I'm less impressed with the coaching scheme to develop him in garbage time. It's obvious when we bring in TY teams are thinking we are going to run the ball or throw a easy screen pass to get him going. They are going to play up and be more aggressive on defense because they expect we aren't running the full play book If you're in on offense you mentally feel the offense is being throttled down. That has a mental effect on the whole execution level. Then Dilly is running lateral or straight ahead into a defense that is expecting it. The plays aren't going anywhere. We also have had hod throw that Mario style 3-5yard cross on third down in front of the sticks for two picks. I would have a 180-degree approach with TY and the team in garage time. Making big time throws like outs to the opposite field or mid-range crosses is what TY needs to be able to do if he is going to ever be QB1. So, I'd have him come out throwing those passe against the defense that is expecting screens and handoffs. TY ever being QB1 and holding the job comes down to making those reads and big-time throws -- game plan for the offense to get him reps doing that when he comes in. I don't care how good we run the ball, throw screens of 5-yard crosses with TY in garbage time - that's not what he needs to do to be QB1someday. Let TY work down the field and see what he can do. He might take his lumps, but does he get better for it and learn? Plus, the players will be more focused on making big plays and not feel like we have throttled down. If TY hits a couple good throws the lateral runs, screes and slants can be mixed in and go. They got TY almost running a Mario scheme in garbage time. He isn't looking good, I don't know how that type pf scheme is going to improve him, and I can't tell how and if he is improving.

It wasn't like this when I was a kid, but times and the world had changed. We didn't have cell phones when I was a kid. The 24-hour news channel's spawned "The Soud Bite" -- giving instant attention to all things in life including sports. " playoffs, playoffs, don't talk to me about playoffs" is a good example, it became a commercial. Denny Geen's " they are who, they thought they are, if you want to crown their a** then crown them" Then we moved into the Myspace and into FaceLook, Then Twatter "The Selfie" and Insta-Stupid age, and now Tik-Tok. I use none of that stuff- it's stupid to me. I just turned 50 and my kid in is mid 20's and doesn't use that stuff, probably partly as a result of my parenting and character. Younger generations use these Apps daily and they are all about your "profile" and getting attention. People use dating Apps now and many create this false impression of themselves to impress through pictures and describing the "AMAZING" life they live. FaceLook and Twatter saw people compiling huge number counts of friends online and posting a pic of their fancy meal they were out to eat, or a pic of the Margarita they were drinking. Everyday things became LOOK AT ME moments. Now people make dance videos of themselves on Tik-Tok. The world has changed and so has sports with the celebrations. Mark Gastineau had his sack dance and he TV camera never missed it and the attention has just grown. These kids playing now have grown up in the LOOK AT ME social media age. Spending hours doing social media and to celebrate every play on TV, to them it's normal. To conclude I will say LOOK AT ME and my post!! haha

I'd like to ask the ODB Crew that read these comments to at least give Alan a "like" at the top of the thread if you decide not to comment. We are lucky to have him doing this Saturday Spoof for us and we should him how much we support him. "That was terrific" Alan, I appreciate the mood you bring to game days with your articles. It helps my game day devilish horns come out. Go Ducks! -
