What's Your Least Favorite Sports Cliche(s)?

Recommended Posts

I'll start.

This one is not quite as solidified to exact wording, but it goes something like this when already wealthy athletes discuss holding out or wanting new, more lucrative contracts:

"Just trying to feed my family"

"Want to make sure me and my family survive"

"Want to secure my family's future"

If you you can barely "survive" on $1M annual salaries, I've got a Financial Planning 101 course to sell you.

Your turn . . . GO!

Pretty much anything Helfrich said after each loss in 2016. However, “That’s on me as the head coach” was the worst.

Discussing an upcoming game with possible outcomes...but...

"We'll see."

No kidding we'll see. Isn't that the most obvious thing in the world?

I think the most overused word in broadcasting is physicality.  I get so tired of hearing it over and over again all throughout a game.

"If you ain't cheating...you ain't trying!  (Along with the oft forgotten tail end of that quote).  "And it's only cheating if you get caught."

Integrity is Hard.  Impulsivness is Easy.  We ALL need to do better.

Out!

Coachspeak has produced so many but the worst is:

"One game at a time"...

The only time this isn't true is with

   chess.

"It's only business"

No, businesses do not hold out the last year of their contract for more money!

"He's got a great future ahead of him."

"Defense Wins Championships!' / "The Best Defense is a Good Offense!"

"No conference plays Smash Mouth D like we do in the SEC!"

Hmmmm. 2023, Oxford, Mississippi - Ole Miss 55 - LSU 49 - No OT 😁

"He, She, It, They is/are The 'GOAT."

You need an acronym for the greatest of all time? Ask anyone who isn't a sports fan, they're out there, and they will think you are dumping on the Team/person receiving GOAT kudos.

"They put their pants on one leg at a time!" How do you know?

"The score is 35 to 7 headed into the 4th quarter. State has a long way to come back." DUH!

"Now, they have to play for pride." In other words, they're getting destroyed.

Here's one I'd like to hear: "The key to victory is U scoring more points than State."

My pet peeve - "The schedule is 'manageable.' " Instead of, "State's schedule this season SUCKS!"

Mash The Potatoes!

"There are no easy games in this league."

"We didn't make enough plays to win this one."

"The game was really a lot closer than the final score would indicate."

“Its always been my dream”, as the excuse offered by athletes to forego education and go pro.

     Beaver Believer

. . . Have to add that what produces most of these annoying cliches are the same stupid, uninspired questions from the media season after season.

“He never got his head around to look for the ball.”

Pass interference has NOTHING to do with turning your head.

Anything about a "Gimmick" or something being "gimmicky"

If it works and is within the rules of the game then it's a valid strategy.

Most strategies have weaknesses and are exposed at some point.

We really respect our opponents.

Should have been here yesterday, the fish were really biting.

It’s gut check time, and we are going to find out who wants it more.

We need to take it to the next level.

“He is day to day.” or “He is week to week.”

When updating the status of an undisclosed injury or health of a specific player.  There was a time when this one would drive me crazy! 🤷🏻‍♂️

I mean I understand why this broad of an answer is used, but seriously, does the young man have a mild case of dehydration, perhaps a slight cramp or has he sustained a severe level 4 concussion that could lead to brain damage?  Is he going to possibly miss a game rep or two or should I be praying for his friends and family?

Obviously I’m kidding a bit, but this type of response used to really get under my skin.

Just saw it. I follow the 49ers, and after Brandon Aiyuk signed his massive contract, an article said:

”Aiyuk’s financial future is now secure.”

The $12.5 million he earned over the last 4 years just wasn’t security enough . . .
