A Buckeye Declaration That Will NOT Age Well...

Recommended Posts

I was pretty surprised to see what was written below, but then the B1G really doesn't know Oregon yet...

image.png

The comment above by a Buckeye fan lacks some relevant background, so here is some help...

“Sitting in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, Oregon’s Autzen Stadium is one of college football’s hidden jewels. Before kickoff, Autzen is as peaceful as the Willamette River, which runs through Eugene just a few minutes from the stadium. After kickoff, the fans – even the alumni – forget who they are, where they come from and what their degree is in.

The audience adopts a new collective identity for the next three-and-a-half hours: the 12th, 13th and 14th man. Autzen’s 59,000 strong make the Big House collectively sound like a pathetic whimper.”

“It’s louder than any place I’ve ever been, and that includes The Swamp at Florida, The Shoe in Columbus, and Death Valley at Louisiana State. Autzen Stadium is where great teams go to die.”
J. Brady McCullough, The Michigan Daily

I knew this was an extraordinary defensive line, but wow...

Top three sack leaders had a total of 12.5 sacks for the entire 2023 season,

and the top three in 2024 have 11.5 sacks after just five games?  Whew!

Amazing how the addition of some players helped Burch too.

Think Autzen will be rocking on Saturday?

The Ohio State fan can count, 102,000 - 62,000 = 40,000 is correct. The assumption that the discrepancy creates lower volume though is a major miscalculation.

They may hold 102,000, but that doesn't mean that all 102,000 are screaming their lungs out. A stadium that large just makes room for the bigger "wine and cheese" crowds that seem to be so prevalent in the stadiums of blue blood programs.

It's a blackout game. If it is 75% as loud as Fright Night 2009? They won't be able to hear any calls on offense. Chip remembers Fright Night!

I can see Chip trying to explain to the team how it will be, but, until you're in it, and having your teeth rattling, it's hard to understand.

Pretty arrogant to say "Autzen will be a non-factor"

“It was like some sort of crazy torture in the movies. How do people do that so long without taking a breath? I think my ears are still ringing.”

     -- Adrian Peterson, Oklahoma RB

“I think Autzen Stadium. Per person, the Oregon stadium is the loudest stadium I’ve ever been in. The fact that it’s so low to the ground doesn’t allow the sound to escape.”

      -- Lee Corso, ESPN GameDay

“If you’ve never been to a game at Autzen Stadium do yourself a favor and get there soon. One word for the experience. Loud. Hurt your ears loud. Make them bleed loud. The Big Ten has nothing as loud as Autzen.

       -- BigTenTailgate.com

“That’s the loudest stadium I’ve ever been in.”

-- Lloyd Carr, Michigan HC (after playing at Autzen)

In addition to the unusually high volume-per-fan ratio in Autzen, the roof above the visitor sideline makes a big difference. However, there will be a lot of Ohio State fans...

Have to agree with you on that one. There should be a requirement when you sell your tickets to this game that the buyers have to answer 3 Oregon football history questions to make sure they are going to the right person! lol

Let's do a little math:

Ohio Stadium is the 3rd or 4th largest (depends on the source) college venue in the US with a seating capacity of 102,780 spread over 808,359 square ft shaped like a giant oblong horseshoe. That's 7.86 sqft per fan. Maximum decibel level is not documented.

Autzen is around 400,000 sqft (exact size not documented but estimated from stadium dimensions and UO published concourse areas) and seats 60K including SRO. Roughly 6.7 sqft per rabid, stomping, screaming Duck fan.

It is inside a steep earthen bowl with surfaces that bounce sound like an amphitheater. Maximum noise has been recorded at +127dB putting it in the top five nationally. Fans are right on top of the field and opposing teams routinely note how tough it is to hear.

Yes, Autzen can literally fit inside Ohio Stadium. But decibel-wise would you rather be sitting on a commercial runway at some distance from 747-200s taking off or standing right next to an F-35 Lightning launching off the flight deck of the USS Gerald R Ford.

So to say the atmosphere and noise level that will be generated at Autzen on Saturday is inconsequential shows a rather amusing degree of ignorance.

One of the loudest stadiums in the country and what's the song used to get the crowd to take it to the next level? Shout!

Former Pac-12 coach Rick Neuheisel now works for CBS Sports, and he recently picked the No. 3 Oregon Ducks to beat the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday, Oct. 12. The only member of the CBS panel to pick Oregon, Neuheisel offered a memorable quote about the effect Autzen Stadium has on opposing teams.

Neuheisel said, "I agree with all of you guys. You're impeccable with your information, but have you ever been to Autzen when those people get turnt out? This is going to be wild. This is going to be maniacal, and Eugene will come to life."

Neuheisel took a couple of trips to a hostile Autzen Stadium while coaching at Washington from 1999-2002 and at UCLA from 2008-2011.

"Dillon Gabriel also knows how to play on this stage, having done it against your Longhorns a year ago," Neuheisel said to fellow CBS Sports analyst Brian Jones. "Over 100 yards rushing yards in that game. I'm taking the Ducks. The Ducks are winning at home."

Before the start of the season Josh Pate had Autzen in his list of loudest Stadiums he has been in, but not the top.

He said part of the reason it wasn't at the top is he was there for a mediocre game, and said it was subject to revision after he goes to the OSU game, which is now here.

I hope he brought his earplugs.

My belief from a few months ago was that 2024 would be the "Oregon Surprise Tour" in the B1G.  Nobody would believe the stories about Oregon or Autzen until they actually experienced it.  Even if we beat tOSU, the other B1G members will poo-poo it because, "the Buckeyes overlooked them, but we won't."

And then they do.

The buzz about Oregon and Autzen from this game will create ENORMOUS interest in Oregon from other B1G fans, who will want to visit, watch our games, etc.  The ramp-up of eyeballs on Oregon that we all discussed before is about to take a big step!

Was in there, on the north rim of Autzen Stadium,  chaperoning a concession stand full of teenagers, the day Kenny Wheaton and the Ducks changed the college football landscape...

That was the first time I thought I was going deaf, in the stadium, "where great teams go to die"... It's been exponentially louder since then!

There’s a zero percent chance the tOSU players will get rattled?

Absolutely. First, 'these OSU players" haven't played a B1G Away game yet this season. They actually haven't played a big game anywhere this season yet, This Bucknut is rattled already.

Only been to Autzen once. I was driving south and saw the lit up stadium and so took a side trip to kinda suck up the atmosphere outside without a ticket. As I wandered, I saw a gate was open and some obliging Duck fans pushed it open further and let me and my companion in.

It was a chilly night, the Ducks were losing to WSU I believe, and the Oregon fans that invited us in apologized for how dead the crowd was on this evening saying, You gotta come back when we have a good team and are playing a big game. I always thought I might want to do just that to confirm what I had heard from other Oregon fans about Autzen since then.

In games like Saturday's. the home crowd can be worth 3-7 points IMHO.  Go Ducks!! Get after their rear-ends!

I have “Bad-Word” software installed that automatically replaces some words.  It is not flawless, and has created some occasional issues, but it has helped ease my burden from having to send emails that annoy people.

They do not want to receive those emails, and I certainly don’t want to send them. So the software has helped quite a bit!

But I think in a year or two I'll miss it. It's the history that makes those games and rivalries special.
