I know we all know how DL feels about Oregon, but it's still awesome to see him do it at a national level.

Lanning truly is a trailblazer in this regard as he's the first big-time name/coach that I've seen shut down, so emphatically, a number of blue-chip programs. I think other coaches are following his lead (Cignetti, Rhule, etc.)

OBD is in third place in our conference and realistically somewhat of a long shot to win it all this year and we all still love it! Just competing at the highest level year after year is all we can really ask.

If we actually make the championship game or to even win it would be historic events. At LSU not being in the championship after a few years would have the hot seat heating up. Who needs that.

He’s got top level resources, compensation and a rabid and appreciative fan base in a very chill environment for family life. Sounds like a great deal to me.

We have a special coach, loving who he is. I’m thankful he is Oregon’s head coach! It’s rare to find that in a coach these days.

Dan Lanning appeared on "The Rich Eisen Show" on Disney Plus Thursday and made clear once again how strong are the chances he leaves Oregon for LSU.

Hopefully Oregon remembers its past and never becomes like those programs. I would hope that a coach would always have the opportunity to turn it around at Oregon (like Coach Bellotti was able to do) before being shown the door. Commitment is a two way street.

I remember the relief we all felt when Chip announced he was staying at Oregon after the Fiesta Bowl win against Kansas State. However, Chip always had that One-foot-out-the-door vibe to him.

Helfrich wasn't given the anywhere near the same amount of wiggle room Bellotti got.

Cristobal brought in highly ranked classes which bought him some room and he got a freebe from the 2020 season. Yes we won the Pac-12 but if that was a full season I think we would have been. Quite disappointed at the level we were with the 2021 season. Cristobal does just good enough to bring hope..

But I think Oregon fans are only two under performing seasons away from calling for his head. Fan bases have absolutely zero patience and ADs feel a lot of pressure especially from boosters.

If Uncle Phil is happy then Lanning is safe more than anything. He'd be one of the people to pay the buyout if it ever comes to that.

With all that said... I really really really hope it never comes to that.

I'm just being realistic as looking at some other Duck forums out there are calling for coaches to be fired after a couple bad performances. Our fan base is really not too different than that of LSU, Penn State or Florida. Just FishDuck is a nice little corner of the fan base.

I honestly cant remember the last time I posted on another Duck forum... I used to want multiple sites including several where I observed Ser PoissonCanard was reviled on multiple occasions.(myself on a lesser basis... I dont understand football well enough to back up my position with logical, factual, reasoning to make a dent in the arguments of most guys who have played the game)

I enjoy the general comraderie found here on a daily basis.

The loudest and most obnoxious voices on many football forums (Ducks or otherwise) don't know as much about football as they think they do.

I remember when I first started posting on FishDuck (before the forum when we just had conversations under the articles) that I was always cautious in making any comments because I didn't feel like I knew as much as others. I mean, I still know that I know nothing (thanks Socrates) but I am fine being corrected when I get something wrong.

I have a friend and colleague in the social studies department who is the offensive line and offensive coordinator for the school's football team. I took him with me to the Montana State game and he at least was kind enough to say that I know more than pretty much everyone around us screaming for deep balls. So I'll take that.

Now I'm writing a weekly article and some of them are good and I think have valuable insights.

You probably know more than you think you do and the loudest voices tend to know less than they believe they do as well. Your insights Woundedknees are always welcome.

I hear you but with Helfrich I think it was a deeper feeling that the program was regressing and there was little change of a turnaround under his “leadership.” Recruiting was in the toilet, IIRC.

It was evident that Helfrich was a great evaluator of QBs and a good offensive mind but he was not head coach material. There is nothing wrong with that and he seems to be doing well now on TV.

Dunning Kruger effect.. it's a measure of wisdom in it's own way.

It's idiotic how the media keeps thinking Lanning is this coaching option for other teams. I mean DeBoer is more likely to leave Bama for something better than Lanning, why don't they throw his name out there instead.

On a more realistic note, any Jedd Fisch rumors? That guy has always sounded like a short termer, so maybe this will be the test.if he's interested in a better college HC gig or if he's only really interested in moving on to the NFL.

The irony for UW is any strong success whether this season or next, probably means Jedd gets an offer he can't refuse and they start over again with a new coach.

I'm locked in on Dan Lanning. If he keeps the recruiting at a high level and the team in constant contention for the Playoff, I'll be good.

Most of my frustration gets directed at the Coordinators (less so at Lupoi because that's DL's specialty, so he gets that heat).

That said, Dan Lanning seems like a coach that would make changes when/if needed.

There are SO many open HC jobs right now that if he wants any of them he'll get one.

I haven't been following coaching searches so far and realistically there is going to be a lot of quiet behind the scenes stuff going on because we are only just over halfway through the season.

But if Fisch wants a job that's not at UW ... He'll get one. There just aren't that many pre-existing big games floating around.

And the few that are like Lanning aren't leaving their current programs.

There is so much swirling right now that everyone seems to be waiting to see what LSU does before the dominoes start to fall, which is probably increasing the pressure on Florida to strike first. Also adds a dimension of pressure on programs like FSU that may be on the firing fence and will no doubt feel an increased sense of urgency with each passing week. Not the time to have a bad showing.

If I was Florida, I’d try to strike first and swipe Fisch. He’s a good coach and picking off a “contending” B1G coach would be as good of a power play as any in the optics war.

Sounds to me like Lanning is saying that the only way he is leaving is if he is fired.

I like that optic. Maybe we'll have to force him into retirement in another 50 years.

In the end...it is just our opinions, and we are all free to share them here. Once in a while I see a post where I have to bite my lip to restrain myself, and follow my own rules. But the opposite is the norm; every day I am learning from all of you.

Recently we have had some epic threads of really well thought-out, and reasoned posts. Are they right? Will their thoughts come to pass? Who knows? But it darned fun to ponder about the points that so many of the wonderful members of the forum present.

Much has been written about Mariotta finding his way to Oregon; and, it certainly was helpful having Herbert playing football right down the road from Autzen; but, those QBs brought in otherwise?

QB is of course notoriously a tough spot to evaluate; but, I would say still safe to question the "great evaluator" tag? Among Rodrigues, Mahalak, and Jonsen, really important spot to whiff.

Even in the Herbert year, flipping Tristen Wallace from Ohio State was the bigger splash after Seth Green decommitted to Minnesota (himself an eventual QB washout who ended up as a sort of hybrid WR/RB at UM). Wallace of course quickly ends up in some hot water and turns into a WR at Prairie View A&M.

[ If one wants to throw in Daryle Hawkins and Green, you find five recruits brought in for a look at QB who ultimately ended up college WRs, TEs, or hybrid ball carriers (Hawkins, Hobbs, Jonsen, Wallace, and Green). 5 out of 12 QB recruits (42%) turning in college receivers just seems an odd number in evaluating how well someone has done recruiting QBs ]

Without VA, it is quite possible Helfrich struggles to even make it to 2016. "Penthouse to the outhouse" style collapse in a single season doesn't appear to have been impossible. 🫤
