I encourage you to watch Josh's reaction. He talks through what he's seeing from Miami/Mari Cristbal . . . and that he just doesn't understand how so much talent isn't matching the results on the field (sound familiar?). He so eloquently discusses what we learned during Mari's tenure here, and you can see that the lightbulb is nearly fully turned on; he's receiving a revelation in real time. The Miami discussion starts at the 4:45 minute mark. Enjoy!

It's an indictment on them that they're not winning with those guys."As an aside, are any other Blazers fans excited how the FBI fixed Portland's CristoBillups problem in a similar fashion as Miami helped out Oregon? Not that Mari was up to anything nefarious, but as abysmal gameday coaches holding their teams back, good riddance to each.
Monday at 07:12 PM2 days No. Maybe Miami has a real epiphany that it is an improvement to go from "I lose games I shouldn't" Mario to "I lose the games I should" Franklin.Nah, they think they should be winning Natty's.

Monday at 10:15 PM2 days No. I find it interesting that the national media is finally starting to pick up on it. However, most outlets are framing this as an issue over the past two years, when this has been an ongoing issue with him since 2007.Mario has been a head coach for 14 seasons. He has lost to an unranked team in every single one of those 14 seasons as a head coach. In 10 of those years, he has lost to more than 1 unranked team. He still has the rest of this year to make that 11.Probably the most surprising thing is that he has not been able to really grow and change over time. He’s an elite recruiter and assembles some of the best rosters in college football. However, some things just don’t change:His teams are always undisciplined and have a ton of penalties. He believes that he can just out “physicality” everyone all the time. They are little to no adjustments based on opponent. He doesn’t take advantage of mismatches on offense. His clock management has to be some of the worst in the entire FBS. Situational awareness costs him at least 1 game a year. For comparison, Dan Lanning in four seasons as a head coach has never lost to an unranked team and has only lost one game to a team not ranked in the Top 10. I appreciate what Cristobal did to help elevate the program, but Lanning is a MASSIVE upgrade. Edited Monday at 10:38 PM1 day by GeotechDuck

It is completely unacceptable. I found it refreshing because too many players are selfish. That cost the team a first down in that situation. It should have been addressed. Point blank. It should never come to blows like it did in Arizona, which was another absolutely unacceptable act from a player (for those of you that don't recall, Arizona was blowing out a team, they ran back a fumble for what should have been a TD, but the player dropped the ball at the one and it became a touchback. Arizona lost the game).Players are too full of themselves. They must be humbled, or if not replaced. It's why I like the steelers and the Patriots. They let their players know they are very expendable. And they're both regular playoff teams. Those are teams I can get behind.

You can't expect national media to pay attention to what goes on over here... Our game started too late at night for them to stay up for. Then before he was at Oregon we was at Bama and no one remembers what he was doing before that.

I believe there are times when a coach should erupt. Maybe not that particular issue, but players need to understand limits. And boundaries. Which behaviors are unacceptable, which have grey areas. Kalen DebBoer learned that exact lesson. He hard to be hard nosed enough in order for the players to respond when necessary. Furthermore, players must learn respect. For the game, for other players. For something outside themselves. I betcha DL gets on their behinds. We just never see it. Maybe that is what is preferred. Private lessons. As to Mario, that interaction has nothing to do with the way he loses in my opinion. He simply makes poor decisions, and in many instances, has little grasp of the pulse of the game in the moment. Those are two entirely different issues as far as I am concerned. I highly doubt Miami players even know of this dressing down. For why would they play for a man that is "out of control"? I root for Mario because he contributed to Oregon's ascent. I believe he had to go in order to salvage any opportunity at a job like Miami's because the book was out on him-at least for us. He ruined the greatest offense Oregon ever had - The Gulf Coast-and wanted to entirely junk explosive plays as a matter of course in Oregon football in order to prove how good of a coach he was. Cristobal routed Utah when we thought they would boat race us. He won two PAC12 titles beside himself. He won a Rose Bowl as well, going counter his tendencies. He contributed to our current status. And yes, he chewed out a self absorbed player that could have cost the team a loss. That is why I like Cristobal. I'm still glad he is at Miami. But he will stay in Duck lore forever in my mind because I doubt Dan Lanning comes here if not for what Cristobal laid as a foundation.
2 hours ago2 hr Administrator No. Damn, Mike....just what I needed....a mature voice in the room.I've had SO MUCH fun with Mario over time, and really should not have enjoyed his losses as much as do, but I NEVER SAID I WAS NOBLE.You are right; we owe a lot to Mario because he took the confidence in recruiting that Taggart began, and built upon it. And yes...he did a lot of winning before things started to turn downhill in his last year, but the bottom line is I should appreciate what he gave us. And I do....Now I go back to lampooning him! He'll Get Clock Management Figured Out... Mr. FishDuck

As a high school basketball coach, I 100% agree that there are times a coach should erupt. But to be effective, those times should be few and far between. And just as importantly, that eruption should be in the locker room behind closed doors. I don't believe that there is any benefit in publicly humiliating a player.
