Like the track officials that ruined the Devon Allen story, PAC-12 officials mistake themselves for the attraction. NBA refs swallow their whistles for the All-Stars because that league wants entertainment value. IMHO, our conference is obsessed with unobtainable pristine fairness, over entertainment value. Since perfect is the enemy of merely great, in the end, we get neither. Chalk up another utopian mission failure. Remember this the next time you watch a Pac12 basketball game and the last 4 minutes takes an hour due to "whistle-mania" and endless free throws. At least NBA fans get the entertainment they want. To me they go too far the other way and have turned their product into the WWE. The SEC (surprise) seems to get the balance right.

Which, in turn, would undermine Title IX which directly threatens Financial Aid and federal funding of Universities, approximately 90% of the revenue stream of higher education. No one has quite discussed this point yet, but it is the proverbial elephant in the room. How ironic it will be when the Profs start screaming their support for the revenue generating sports in one of the biggest 180's in history.

If the NCAA were adept and capable, they would be the lead "agent" for college football and use their bully pulpit powers to bring the networks into a cooperative win-win solution. Doesn't it seem inevitable to one day settle in to four 16-team D-1 superleagues and cover the entire country....each with its one championship (Bowl Games) that feeds a winner into the CFP? That makes 64 teams. The ACC, PAC10 and Big 12 create the 4th superleague and fill out the remaining 3. BYU and ND football drop independence to grab a seat. ABC/ESPN, FOX, CBS and NBC can divvy up rights, rotate annual coverages and split BOWL/CFP revenues. I would love to see a relegation element where low performing teams lose their spot in D1 to affiliated D2 conferences teams that win their league each year. I realize this is Utopian and therefore unrealistic....but it made me feel good to post it.

I realize that the gloss is off of former 5-star Bo Nix three years later. But, the fact that he transferred from an SEC-program to be with KD said a lot for the coach's acumen. Now, with Dante Moore committing to KD, he has another big check mark in his plus column. I hope KD sticks around a few years.

College football has been stratifying for two decades. Homo sapiens are the evolutionary apex predator because of hierarchies. If DL is as good as advertised, then he probably will elevate to the highest level of the CFP hierarchy. The only news that would be better for Oregon is if we replaced Bama at the top of the hierarchy first. Which I am on board with, but I don't see a viable blueprint yet. Let's get to work.

Thanks mrspenny....great analysis. Spot on that the biggest losers in all of this could be the non-revenue sport athletes, primarily female and minority students. Universities that accept financial aid have to adhere to the Title IX statutes which require a balance of schollies between male and female student athletes. But how can schools afford NIL for Men's FB and BB teams and the 100 female scholarships it takes to counter those rosters in the non-revenue sports? But let's be honest, they probably operate at a loss on top of the scholly expenses. We call them "non-revenue" sports but in reality they are "sports that lose money."

Universities are more akin to federal agencies than business entities. A Uni Prez and a CEO need some similar skills to deal with bureaucratic functions, but there is nothing like the market-based skill set a business CEO requires. Unis are protected from many of the realities of the business world. Their revenues are paid by people other than their clients. They have their own accrediting bodies, made up of their peers, to protect those federal revenue streams form new competition. They are not subject to tariffs, taxes or regulations like other import entities (foreign students) nor do they need sophisticated marketing departments to develop new products or conduct market research at the same level of a business. On top of it all, on the West Coast, with its lukewarm attitudes toward commerce and team sports, those Unis will hire candidates with a focus on "academic prowess", activism and elite social status. Unlike, say, Purdue, which hired Mitch Daniels and who has pointed that school toward student career success, business integration in the classroom and holding down costs (hasn't raised tuition in a decade). Or, Uni presidents in the SEC who understand that football is an equal part of their brand to the academics and who represent (and fundraise amongst) populations beyond the alumni and student body. This is why the PAC-12 is left out in the cold.....we don't play big boy college athletics, despite Uncle Phil's dollars. Goes to show, it takes a culture, to dominate in this game.

What if the Miami gig was his target all along? He inherits a team that underperformed under Taggart and a good QB coming back. So, he plays it safe to not blow his shot at the U. Probably was talking to that donor all along, too. Solid QB, weak conference, USC down......all he has to do is not choke to win 10 games per year, and wait for Manny Diaz to chooch the pooch. COVID gave him an excuse for one year but exposed the weakness of his strategy when he doesn't have an all-star qb to save his behind. The question is begged: if he did pull the rope-a-dope strategy with us, how will things be different in Miami. Let his coordinator's coach and scheme? If so, maybe he will excel. Or, is he really a stubborn blockhead who knows how to recruit but can't run a program? His lack of game management would push me to the blockhead theory.

Apropos of nothing, I attended the ND vs. Navy game in Dublin on 9/1/2012 I bought a round in Temple Bar for some Navy pilots who took me to the game as a tag a long. Will never forget it. Navy fans were legit, but Notre Dame's crowd was legion on the streets of Dublin.

Thanks for posting. Definitely more detail than previous articles I have seen. Leads one to believe that there is some substance to the discussions of the ACC alliance model. Could be the emerging solution with one of these options being the next era.

Title IX would be the best hope for a federal intervention. But it likely wouldn't avoid this reality. Since the revenue pie is growing and not shrinking, for the big schools, the Feds would see that as a reason to keep those revenues chained to Title IX for the purposes of supporting non-revenue sports. The schools left out of the super-conferences would then likely seek some Title IX relief in recognition of shrinking revenues.

If we do the ACC quasi-merger, and as Charles points out, cut non-revenue sports to max football investments. We could perhaps create a competitive recruiting advantage by having Tinker Hatfield trick out an old 747 for team transpo. Air Duck One could include treatment facilities, lay flat seats, an upstairs lounge for boosters! Gotta make lemonade out of lemons here guys.

Heart says Oregon, head says Bama. Not sure what The Tide's recruiting class looks like, but if they don't have a QB, I would not be shocked to see Moore and Young in Tuscaloosa. Hope I'm wrong, but it feel like next year's class will be the big one for DL and crew. As long as we aren't in Linfield's division in the new era.
