The Decline of the Eugene Register-Guard
TexasDuck replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I have a friend who worked at a large paper for over 20 years. Same ownership family for over 100 years. He remembers well the day at a staff meeting when they first heard about what later became Craigslist. They were told it could potentially cut their ad revenue by up to 90%. He and his colleagues were skeptical. Within five years it was severance package time. We lost a lot when we lost our papers. They are a shell of themselves if they exist at all. -

CBS Dennis Dodd Finally Spreads Some Sugar on the Pac-10

There is such a fine line with all of this. I remember hearing the “alternate” lyrics of the OSU fight song, sung loudly from the student section at Autzen. To a 13-14 year old kid, that was absolutely gold. And, I’m none the worse for wear because of it. I’m tracking this thread. The variety of opinions is interesting.

The Oregon Ducks Offense: Will Stein’s Heavy Veer
TexasDuck replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Those of us who are old enough to remember the Veer Offense in the Don Read days shudder just a bit at the thought. -
Dennis Dodd has been a hack of the first order for as long as I can remember. His articles lack any real depth or insight, On the rare occasion when he is right, it’s because he stumbled onto something obvious to anyone. Other than that, he’s right on the money.

Apple TV+ Could Decide Fate of PAC 12
TexasDuck replied to Babyjesus615's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Maybe HGTV or the Food Network might be options. Seriously, this seems like the death rattles for the PAC. -
THE PAC-16 - Time to Go to a 'Super Conference?'
TexasDuck replied to Jon Joseph's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
You’re spot on regarding UTSA. As a San Antonio resident, I can tell you that the Alamodome would be packed if UTSA were a Power 5 program. I believe there’s more potential here than either Rice or SMU. -
Trojan, Bruin Players Will Regret the Move to the Big-10
TexasDuck replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
After the next couple of recruiting cycles, all of their athletes will have signed knowing that they are going to the Big 10. I’m not certain there will be much regret. -
tOSU Cancels Home and Home with Washington Football
TexasDuck replied to Tandaian's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
anOSU doesn’t like much out of conference competition. They love a diet of cupcakes. -
Hendon Hooker for Tennessee should have been a finalist. I’ve kind of given up on the Heisman, for the most part.

Cheering for Huskies: I Just Can't Do It

Never. Never, never, never, never root for the Fuskies. Too many memories of a sea of purple on Franklin Blvd., celebrating their superiority. NEVER. -

How Many Quarterbacks Can One Team Sustain?
TexasDuck replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
During his most successful years at Norte Dame, Lou Holtz weighed in on recruiting. He talked about making sure you had a balance of 3, 4, and 5 star players. Have a good mix in the room of all-stars and worker bees. At that time he could get lots of great players, as many as anyone. But he had a formula. That always made sense to me and it seems even more important now than before. FWIW. -
I have a great deal of admiration for Jonathan Smith, the way he has built his team, and how they play. It’s really the perfect approach to build and maintain a strong program in Corvallis.

It sure sounds like this is a good and timely move for you. All platforms have struggled with how to deal with the inherent challenges, some better than others. OBD has been the best by far, due to your incredible commitment. It’s wise on your part to know that you simply cannot shoulder this alone. Be very proud of what you have created. You have a grateful community here.

Oregon Names UTSA's Will Stein as Offensive Coordinator

Watching lots of UTSA in these parts. Great offense. This seems to be a good hire. -
Canzano: Boosters Fume as Oregon Ducks Look for Answers
TexasDuck replied to Pennsylvania Duck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Some of the high-risk calls in the last two games were head-scratchers for sure. Attempting a two yard keeper with a hobbled Bo Nix, for example. Perhaps this is due to the relative inexperience of the HC/OC duo. If so, that would point toward choosing an OC with more years and reps, who could balance the HC a bit. While people are quite taken with the early thirties wunderkinds we are seeing these days, there is something to be said for some veteran perspective. -
Lanning can get another good OC. The bigger issue is Tosh. It will be interesting to see how Lanning handles that.

Former Oregon Athletic Director Norv Ritchey Passes
TexasDuck replied to ICamel's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I knew Norv in his later years. He showed me the original plans and pictures of Autzen, and he shared many great stories. I’m grateful our paths crossed. -
Living in Texas I watch a lot of Big 12 football. I think their officiating is good, for the most part. It’s the sweet spot between the SEC and the PAC 12 that the OP mentioned. The PAC 12 refs have been ridiculous and embarrassing for most the this century. I believe it has had a big effect on the quality of play when PAC 12 teams take the national stage. People point to the PAC 12 Network as the biggest failure but I believe it’s the officiating, hands down.
