I believe Lanning and Lupoi are making their own adjustments to what the opponent is showing. It would be foolish not to take advantage of the opportunity to do so. This is a chess game between O.C. & D.C., HC & HC. Finally Oregon has some coaches who know how to play the game.

Am I an evil person if I hope Pennix Jr. throws another (3rd) pick?

Scalping a game like this will be a losing proposition. Like you said, there'll be tickets for 75% of face value, maybe even less. They'll make it back up when Washington and Utah come to town.

WOW, What if the Pac 12 Went All-in with Amazon
Mic replied to Steven A's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
My devilish side wants me to say because Bezos and Knight are gazillionaire buddies. My logical side says the other conferences have their own plush TV deals already worked out and Amazon is trying to buy into the game. -
Chip really should have taken that last FG before the Half to put UCLA up 3 scores. I think that was a mistake.
-
Could be the late start. Look for the same thing tomorrow night. Keep in mind, the Rose bowl is almost half again as big as Autzen.
-
(Pensive face) Be safe if you go. I feel bad for the athletes because these late night starts are lousy for them as well for a whole host of reasons. Stanford - Oregon? R we kidding! This should be a total sellout and probably would have been with a 1:00 start, or even a 4:00 pm start.

Jake Dickert - WSU Lincoln Riley - USC Kalen DeBoer - Wash Dan Lanning - Oregon Add this bunch to Chip Kelly at UCLA, Johnathan Smith at OSU, David Shaw at Stanford and Kyle Whittingham at Utah and the Pac-12 (or what's going to be left of it) might be one of the more impressive conferences in the country right now - Head coaching wise. And speculation that Carolina Panthers Head Coach Matt Ruhle may be looking at replacing Herm Edwards at ASU would really add to that list. Yeah, Charles might be right: Speculation on the demise of the Pac-12 may just be a bit premature. Good!

I had to add a laugh to this post - I sure hope that's not really a homeless man with a photoshopped card. It can't be!!

I'm glad you brought this up Drex (cool name, btw) because what I hear when he speaks is an almost total absence of personal glorification. There's a sincere vein of humility in this young man when he fields questions about his accomplishments. And he never forgets to remember who helped him get to where he is and what he's been able to do. Maybe it's because he's been in the spotlight and interviewed so many times over the years and been thru so many ups and downs that he's acquired a real sense of who is and why he's that way. A coach as a father, a solid family unit in his background, and a personal faith-based foundation under him has had a vey positive effect on the young man. I'm happy you've noticed his humility too. It's a very refreshing thing to see in an elite athlete today.

Me too. Besides, soon Amazon will own THE WORLD, and everything will be moot. Let's hope Jeff Bezos likes college football enough to let us keep it. (Charles, I'm speaking facetiously, of course). -
Circa 2012: Lanning Replicates Bend-But-Don’t-Break Defense
Mic replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Considering this scenario seriously (a little alliteration here) I think this would be an excellent goal to shoot for and one that Lanning might just have in mind. But I'd tweak it just a tad to say 14 points given up (on average) and 42 points scored. Btw, isn't this about what Georgia's doing right now? -
Circa 2012: Lanning Replicates Bend-But-Don’t-Break Defense
Mic replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Well, that's a much more reasonable (and realistic) approach to the equation I grant. But wouldn't you luv to see a D that scores more in safeties, pick-6's and fumbles-returned-for-TD's that the opponent can muster on Offense! Imagine the fear they'd instill in their opponents. -
Despite most of the guys here wanting UW to win (so O gets them at home and upsets an unbeaten team, I guess) I'm pulling for Chip's bunch. Next to USC, I dislike this team more than any other in the Pac-12 and I don't care if they have 5 losses when they show up in Autzen. So, I too hope they don't travel well. In fact, I hope they forget their QB and place kicker back in Seattle.

Circa 2012: Lanning Replicates Bend-But-Don’t-Break Defense
Mic replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I remember a rather tongue-in-cheek discussion I was having once with a very die-hard U-of-O alumni and Duck fan: "I'll be satisfied with the Defense when they score more points than the opponent - every game!" So there's that high standard bar to shoot for, I guess. We could relay this to Dan Lanning I suppose but that might be expecting a bit much. -
Here's another 'fun' fact Data Nerd, that I was perusing just now: Autzen Stadium (54,000) ranks 83rd (if I counted correctly) out of 154 FBS schools in capacity. Just above Penn Field where the Penn Quakers play. Reser Stadium (currently undergoing renovations) ranks dead last (26,407). No wonder we see 8:00 pm starts for some of our games. The Beavers are lucky they get on TV at all!

That's an interesting comparison. I like that it takes it all the way down to the different collegiate levels at each position. So, going by this analysis (I can't speak for its accuracy) Stanford's WR's are way bigger (esp in height) than the NCAA Div. I level WR's on average. And to add to that advantage, our DB's are actually pretty average for the Div. I level in size: ie. <than Furd's WR's by a lot. Bottom line: Big mismatch for the Furd. Now, Let's see if McKee can take advantage of all the height advantage he has to throw to. Didn't watch the Washington game, but they coped with it obviously very well. I expect we will too, if in a somewhat different way.

Were PittDuck to get what he (we) all want, my gosh! Oregon would be doing to good teams what Georgia did to us. Score 50+ points and give up <3! I could 'live' with that! -
Circa 2012: Lanning Replicates Bend-But-Don’t-Break Defense

Now this is interesting. I hadn't thought much about this since Coach Alliotti retired but now that you mention it, yeah, he should have been considered for the head job. Maybe he didn't want it? Maybe it was discussed but over-ruled? Maybe it was never considered an option by either Nick or the University. Dunno. But it doesn't do much good now to look back. I think O is in a good place right now - for as long as they can keep this current staff intact. Given today's reality in the CFB world, that doesn't seem like a very long time anymore. Gone almost forever (it seems) are the days of coaches like UTAH's current H.C. He's becoming a fast-disappearing commodity in this sport. The CFB is beginning to resemble its Professional counterpart more and more each year. -
Conference Realignment is Back in the Rumor Mill
Mic replied to 1Funduck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Why does none of this sound like a good thing to me? Pretty soon there could be 2 Super Conferences each divided into 4 major Divisions (each with their own minor divisions) like a mini NFL. Is that where this is all headed? Why not? With the introduction of NIL policies and transfer portal privileges, it will only be a small step to introduce player agents, free-agency, union representation and College-Player Union negations over salaries and compensation, wouldn't it? Amateur Collegiate Sport: R.I.P. We could soon witness the birth of a true NFL minor league - just as soon as each college accepts the support from (and slides under the umbrella of) designated NFL teams. My question would be which NFL teams get to fight over Alabama, Georgia and Ohio State? And who has to take ASU? -
Circa 2012: Lanning Replicates Bend-But-Don’t-Break Defense
Mic replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
It's not just that fans are annoyed with BDB (bend, don't break) Defenses, it's that it allows the opponent to dominate the time of possession while at the same time reducing its own number of offensive opportunities in return. That forces the Offense to score faster and more often (percentage-wise) which is something Chip Kelly was confident his offense could do. It puts a lot of pressure on the Duck Defense, because they are on the field longer and are more exposed to injuries and/or penalties. And it puts more pressure on the Duck Offense to score quickly every time they get the ball. Lanning's team has shown (in the BYU game for instance) that O can manage long, time-consuming drives when that's what's needed AND score quickly when that's what's needed, as in the WSU game. -
Circa 2012: Lanning Replicates Bend-But-Don’t-Break Defense

'Bend, Don't Break' defense works great - when the offense can score light lightening. The other team can dominate the time of possession. The offense needs a Chip Kelly roaring Ferrari. The defense is also, I think, necessitated by personal. When a team is stacked with defensive monsters like Georgia has, not needed. imo I suspect Oregon is playing the best defense Lanning thinks we can with what we have - personnel wise. -
Here, here! I am a huge fan of touchbacks, especially when playing on the road. It's frustrating to see kickoffs consistently come up 10 yards short of the goal line and 25-30 yard runbacks putting the defense at disadvantage after every kick. Run backs get hostile crowds roaring and all because the kicker hasn't the leg to reach the end zone?
-
One for sure. A 2nd possibly. Definitely w/o E.J.Smith, their top rusher. They have another kid (Filikins) who's been pretty good. Their strength: the big WR's & TE and an (apparently) outstanding pocket passer in McKee (top rated QB when passing from a clean pocket last weekend). O's DB's will be tested and a pass rush will be important. I don't think they will be able to run effectively against the Ducks, tho. Lots of passes: ie screens and slants which is what Lupoi's defense concedes to prevent the long gainers. Shots to the corners of the end zone on jump balls, that sort of thing. I agree with David Marsh - the Ducks have too much firepower for Stanford to keep up but they may score more points than fans think. The line has narrowed a bit to -17 with an o/u of 63. O, 41-21 or something in that range?
